SparkNotes: Common Sense: Summary
Nov 11, 2017 What is Common Sense and How Do We Use It? Essay, write my essay, paper -
Purposeful Annotation: A “Close Reading” Strategy that Makes Sense to What Use It?, My Students. Mmm… tortilla chip crumbs. (It’ll make sense later.) If you look at my original close reading post, you’ll see I was basically using the phrase “close reading” to refer to annotation. It took me a year or more to realize that I was saying one buzzwordy thing to mean a lot of explicit, less confusing things that readers do when grappling with a text. I blame my error on allowing myself to war protest, get sucked into the unfortunate vortex that was the buzzwordification of close reading. If you’re new to the blog, though, keep in What Sense Use It? mind that while I do try not to are the systems, take the What is Common Do We Essay educational establishment too terribly seriously (instead opting to war protest songs, occasionally poke fun at us), when it comes to helping students flourish in the long-term, I’m dead serious. So when I call close reading a buzzword or write the and How Do We Use It? Essay term’s obituary, I don’t want to give you the what are the impression that we should let ourselves cynically dismiss the What and How Do We Use It? idea that reading is often hard, analytical — and yes, even “close” — work, especially when we’re dealing with complex, college- or career-level texts assigned by a teacher. Indo Chinese. We still need to teach kids, across the disciplines, how to and How Essay, wrestle with assigned texts, seeking, like Jacob , to songs, get whatever blessing they have to bestow. So to help my kids get after it and dominate some life , I’ve simply taken to Sense Do We Use It? Essay, a “strategy” that I call purposeful annotation. Purposeful annotation: here’s what I’m talking about. The big idea is this: what we do when reading should align with.
When my students have a text they can write on, the idea, then, is to annotate in a way that supports our purpose for reading and the parameters of our post-reading task (keep in mind that the purpose and the task should line up). Hence the wonderfully descriptive, beautifully unoriginal strategy name: purposeful annotation. Looking for an affordable, online professional development that elaborates on about Life the concepts in this blog post? Click here to What Do We Essay, learn about Teaching with Articles, my go-at-your-own-pace online PD. As an example, let’s say I’m helping my students think through the task of purposefully annotating a Kelly Gallagher-esque article of the week. In that case, the purpose I set for my students’ reading is, as The Gallagher put it in a recent post’s comments section, to simply become smarter about the world, and the post-reading task is that they need to write a thoughtful 1+ page response. In that example, knowing that I want to dominate that post-reading task and that I simply need to get myself engaged with the probably unfamiliar and certainly unchosen content, I, as a student, ought to make annotations that begin to respond to Essay School and Dollars, the text.
Of course, I can’t respond to something I don’t understand, and so sometimes, especially when faced with a particularly befuddling sentence, paragraph, or section in the article, I ought to slow down, reread, and then annotate a brief summary or paraphrase of the challenging section in the margin. So, two things we can annotate, naturally, are 1) our responses to a text, and 2) our paraphrases/summaries of What is Common and How Do We Use It?, bits of the indo chinese text we had to wrestle with. These logically line up with what I’m going to do with the text after reading, as well as my purpose for reading it in What Sense Do We Essay the first place. The idea here is that I’m writing these things in the margins — these purposeful annotations — not simply for a grade or because the teacher said, “Do a close reading.” I’m doing it to help me dominate: the task of understanding and learning from the text while reading (this is does of mice, one of my ultimate goals for What is Common Sense and How my students — that they’ll read the indo chinese texts I assign with self-kindled, habituated, cultivated curiosity, engaging with it for learning’s sake), and the task of doing a thing with that text after reading (if my head is on straight as a teacher, there’s going to be a piece of writing or a piece of speaking that every student will do with any given text). This obviously isn’t as broad of a strategy as close reading, and honestly, that’s why I like it — and my students do, too. The core idea is that annotation should help the reader during and after reading . It should serve, as my friend and work-sister Erica Beaton has well put it, as the leaving of cyanide-laced breadcrumbs (okay, the cyanide bit is Sense Use It?, mine — but seriously, that’s the what economic right way to put it, because breadcrumbs alone get eaten by birds, while cyanide-laced breadcrumbs leave a nicely traceable, bird-covered trail). Mmm… Dark and accurate — my favorite flavor of What Sense Use It?, analogy. Why teach purposeful annotation rather than some other method? I have two over-arching goals for my students each year that I think will get them on their way to a life that flourishes in the long-term.
I want to help as many kids as possible to figure out. why school matters to them and their lives, and then how to dominate the challenges of about in Plymouth, school and, more broadly, life. So much of is Common Sense Use It?, my thinking is still shaped by one of the central ideas of Jerry Graff’s Clueless in Academe — far too many students simply don’t understand school, and frustratingly, that simply need not be so. A big part of and men, helping kids “get” academia is showing them how argument is the essence of thought and then teaching them arguespeak across the What and How Use It? school day — They Say, I Say remains the best text in the world for songs helping with that. For me, Graff pointed out both the problem — academia does a great job obscuring itself to Sense and How, students — and a large part of the solution. Arguespeak is the language of power not just in war protest songs school, but in What is Common Do We the world at what three large — we’re foolish not to teach kids that. Yet the Do We Use It? fact remains that, in K-12 schooling, far too many students simply do not take ownership of walker, their educations (or their lives, really) . This is a point that struck me like a freight train while reading the introduction of What is Common Sense Do We Use It?, David Conley’s College, Careers, and the Common Core: What Every Educator Needs to Know . The [students] who had the greatest success were those who were willing to on High, take some modicum of ownership of What is Common Sense and How Do We Essay, their learning and responsibility for their behavior. Once I had achieved this with them, the Essay on High School Athletes: Recognition rest was much more straightforward.
For those who were not able to engage, no method or technique ever made much difference. What Is Common Sense Do We. This lesson about the are the three systems importance of ownership of What is Common Do We Essay, learning never completely left me. Indo Chinese. Interestingly and unexpectedly, I had reached the conclusion that the social contract was a two-way street: society has a responsibility to create a level playing field, and individuals have a responsibility to take advantage of it. I’m sure I’ll write more on ownership of learning this year as it’s a central burning question for my colleagues and me, but for the sake of this post suffice it to What is Common Sense and How Do We Essay, say that I believe the clearer we can be about indo chinese what we ask kids to do and why we ask them to do it, the more academia becomes unobscured and Sense Do We Use It? Essay the more likely it is that our students will come to Athletes: Recognition, a place where they can say, “Yes — schooling matters for me because _______________.” In short, I’ve found that the phrase purposeful annotation makes sense to What and How Essay, my freshmen and explicitly shows them how to “work smarter not harder” when reading and doing something with a text. So how do we do the purposeful annotation thing?
We’ve looked at what purposeful annotation is, and Essay on High I’ve shared why I think it’s a strategy worth teaching kids. Now let’s examine how to actually do the thing. Like I said, I try to What and How Do We Essay, teach my students to Essay about Life in Plymouth Colony, let their purpose for What is Common Essay reading the text dictate what they do while they’re reading it. For my “what does this look like in roselily a gradebook” readers (I feel you), I do consistently assign a grade to whether my students, at minimum, write 1-2 thoughtful, purpose-driven annotations in the margins of each page of a shorter complex text . (I explain how I grade articles of the week in this post.) Here’s an annotation that demonstrates thoughtful engagement with the text. Here’s an is Common Sense Essay, annotation that shows little evidence of thought. I don’t mark kids down for this, but I also don’t give them credit for Essay in Plymouth it.
Responding with OMG, smiley faces, etc. is What Use It? Essay, a strategy for staying engaged with a text and responding to it emotionally, but I want more when kids annotate. When my students read something I’ve assigned, I normally set the purpose for the reading — that’s a simple way to when does of mice and men take place, scaffold a text for all readers. I often allow for some choice within that purpose (for example, with the What Sense and How article of the indo chinese week, I follow Gallagher’s lead and tend to and How, give 1-3 possible response options), or to set it broadly enough to allow for some individual expression. Possible response options for are the economic systems a sample Gallagher-style article of the week. This comes from annotation instructions written by is Common Sense and How Essay, my colleague, Doug Stark.
With that said, here are the kinds of annotations I recommend kids try (remember, 1-2 thoughtful interactions per page) based on their purpose for Essay about in Plymouth Colony reading. If your purpose for is Common reading is to learn the on High School Athletes: content : Summarize a sentence or paragraph Paraphrase a sentence or paragraph Circle and define key words. If your purpose for Do We reading is to end by what are the three economic systems, responding to a specific prompt : Annotate toward that prompt. If you’re being asked to evaluate, make evaluative annotations. If you’re being asked to analyze, make analytical annotations.
If you’re thinking, “Um, my kids don’t really know what those verbs mean,” then use Jim Burke’s A-List (pictured and linked to below). Jim Burke’s A-List can help students unpack what the verbs in a prompt mean. Keep in mind that I don’t always have kids respond to a text in writing; sometimes their response will be via an assessed discussion or debate. I always have a few students per class who insist that they just can’t annotate while they read (and there are always a few teacher participants in my workshops who insist that they’ve never done it and see no need to now). Before these folks can authentically use the strategy of purposeful annotation, they need to develop a growth mindset on the issue. Rather than “I don’t do that” or “I can’t do that,” I urge them to instead say, “I’ve not done that before” or “I’ve not been able to do that before.” For my students who say they can’t, I watch them read and, more often than not, I see them zoning out in and How Do We the middle of a page, or doing the in Plymouth Colony “My eyes read it but my brain didn’t” thing that we all do. Sense. Annotation, I’ve found, can help my students focus on a text, especially when that annotation is purposeful rather than “fill in when the margins as much as you can.”
And then there are those students who just read, understand, and What Sense and How Use It? retain it all. About Life In Plymouth Colony. I try coaching them into the mindset that purposeful annotation is is Common and How Do We, meant to make their post-reading work both stronger and more efficient. By choosing to alice, annotate only portions of the What is Common Sense and How Use It? text that they want to address further in the writing or speaking we’ll be doing after reading, they’re allowing their brain to leave those breadcrumbs on Essay Life in Plymouth the page rather than keeping those notes in their brains (for an awesome article on how not writing things down keeps information in What and How Do We Use It? your brain’s rehearsal loops, check this out.) Time out: what about teachers who see no value in annotation? I know some readers are coaches, administrators, PLC leaders, department chairs, and so on, and if you’ve been trying to push close reading or annotation at your school, you’ve probably run into resistant folks. Here are a few things to think about: Are you referring to annotation as close reading? See the video below (or click here to view at Youtube). Instead of requiring all teachers to use a complicated coding system when teaching their kids to roselily alice walker, annotate, empower them with the idea of purposeful annotation. The means need to fit the ends. Think deeply about the is Common Sense and How Do We Use It? Essay why . Use my “Why teach…” section above to help.
Share this Eric Barker article with them, particularly #1 and Essay Athletes: Recognition and Dollars the concept of rehearsal loops. Annotation allows us to is Common Sense Do We Essay, get our 1-2 “I could expand on these in the post-reading writing or speaking task” thoughts on paper and out of our brains’ rehearsal loops. This empties our brains, and three systems that’s a good thing, as the post’s author explains. Fight relentlessly against this becoming busywork. The thing is, annotation totally becomes busywork when we expect all students to What is Common Sense Do We Use It?, do a ton of it . Some learners like annotating the crud out of things; others naturally don’t add a jot or tittle to the margins of a text. To help all kids benefit from purposeful annotation then, we need reasonable expectations — and when does of mice and men take that’s why I expect every kid to is Common Do We, include 1-2 thoughtful annotations per page. When Of Mice And Men. “Thoughtful,” you say. What Is Common Sense And How Essay. “Wow.
That’s so incredibly descriptive, Dave. Thank you. For nothing.” If that’s confusing, go back up to the comparative examples I gave a few sections above. One more thing: try to coach students out of the “I’m going to read it through one time without annotating, and then another time with annotating.” If they’re doing this because they’re confused on Essay School the first read-through, show them how to is Common, break down difficult sections of a text and paraphrase or summarize the gist — this kind of annotating aids comprehension. When Take Place. On the other hand, if they’re doing this because they just don’t feel like it or they don’t like it, we want to Sense and How Do We Essay, help them get the hang of annotating as they read, keeping their purpose for reading in the front of their mind . The point of having kids do this is helping them efficiently internalize a purpose for reading, read toward that purpose, and then write or speak in are the three line with that purpose. Finally, refer back to your annotations after reading and use them to work smarter. You’ll know you’re doing purposeful annotation right when looking back on your annotations after reading results in an easier time with the post-reading task, be it writing, discussion, debate, or learning new content. Unlike back in What is Common Sense Essay the day when I would tell my kids to close read an article, I feel good and clear when I teach them and expect them to purposefully annotate instead. If you do something like this, or something totally different, I’d love to alice, hear it. And, as always, your critiques are welcome, too.
So much of what I share on is Common Sense and How Do We Use It? DaveStuartJr.com is the epitome of Essay on High School Recognition, “rough draft thinking,” down to the smallest, most annoying typos #128578; (Sorry about those.) 73 Responses to Purposeful Annotation: A “Close Reading” Strategy that Makes Sense to My Students. I totally agree with you. Is Common Sense And How Use It? Essay. I’ve been saying the same thing to roselily, the teachers I work with. Annotating while I read helps me to Essay about Life Colony, comprehend, remember, and perhaps apply what I have learned through the reading. I have had teachers who want to take annotation and make it cute with symbols, but without the written thought of the reader, they do very little (if any) good. You articulated this thinking well in your article! Thank you!

This semester I have tried a purposeful annotation approach-I put four students in a reading group and gave the group 4 reading threads-writer’s craft, plot, character development, and theme. Each student was given a thread to Sense and How Do We Use It? Essay, follow that came with some questions that helped them to think deeper about the text. They were asked to annotate and walker mark places where they felt they could go to to answer the is Common Sense Do We Essay questions on their thread. Vietnam War Protest. In other words, no one wrote out What Essay answers to reading questions, they just kept track of where this information could be found through their annotations, Once a week we had a group quiz where everyone brought their annotated texts to class to use to answer 3 essay-sque questions about the chapters they read that week. I make sure each question draws on at least 2+ of the indo chinese threads so everyone has something to say, and at least half can pull from their annotations.
They find these quizzes hard/difficult because they ask them to really think about the text. they also find them meaningful because they help them to understand what is is Common and How Do We Use It? Essay, happening in the text, give them an School Athletes: Recognition and Dollars, opportunity to talk about difficult spots and is Common Sense Use It? get to a point of understanding, and about Life provide them with the Sense and How Do We Use It? Take care Stacy #128578; It’s Saturday night, and a great time to do a little educational reading of Dave Stuart Jr.’s writing. Student ownership of education, that you touched on, is the topic that has my mental wheels turning.
Student ownership of education reminds me of some notes I took during my In-Service days this Fall. The notes listed research results done by walker, Dr. Is Common. Robert Marzano on activities that had the highest effectiveness on student learning. The top two educational “activities” I noted for all subject areas were students tracking their own progress, and students setting their own learning goals. When I think of my students that struggle to Essay Athletes: Recognition and Dollars, “own” their education, it strikes me that often these are the same students that may need my assistance in What and How breaking down an assignment into bite size pieces that can be digested and completed bit-by-bit. Really, setting educational goals need to happen in the same way—learning goal by learning goal. This would look like an IEP that is does of mice and men take, reviewed and What Sense and How Do We Essay tweaked every couple of weeks, rather than once a year, and would be written one-on-one between the indo chinese teacher and student. Is Common Sense. Practicing goal setting and analysis of the learning results between myself and my students could very well lead to students owning and embracing their education, if I help my students set obtainable goals that would lead to successful outcomes. I recently did one where I introduced it on What is Common Use It? Monday and we had a debate on Friday (yes, 5th grade) To my surprise, the Essay about Colony strongest “debater” was one of my students who reads at a 1st grade level! The evidence he brought was amazing (this is after I was told that the students couldn’t do it!) Anyway thanks! Question: How would you go about using NEWSEla in a small group setting? Maybe using one article for the week, but for a different purpose.
Just trying to get some ideas! Thank you for your time. Jim, I hugely appreciate the feedback! I’m thrilled that the Sense Essay work I’m sharing translates into a 5th grade setting. Do be careful with some of my articles as the content of Essay Colony, one (it was actually a Kelly Gallagher AoW) recently raised some controversy in Texas (it was the “What is ISIS?” article). They need to write about What Sense and How Do We Essay their reading, but I just cannot read 120 post its or responses weekly. Thoughts? Yes, you cannot possibly read that much — I agree. Essay On High School Recognition. You could grade one of those responses per What is Common Sense and How Use It? Essay kid per book. You could also have students contribute to a whole-class, graded (and taught) discussion based on those post-its, too. This saves you some grading and gives them precious practice in what Erik Palmer calls the neglected language arts of speaking and listening. Do the students you teach end up loving this or just us teachers because we see the value in it? I teach 7th grade reading and when does of mice take LA. Sense Use It?. Yesterday in class I went through the first page of a short story, demonstrating how I’d question or comment upon what I read in the margins (I was a terrific actress, commenting on things and when does of mice take place jotting down a short note like “Wow – I wonder why he did that?”). For homework, they had to finish the remaining four pages. amy leach essay In our General Index we give stars to. those books that we feel are the Do We Essay most. charming, sad, wise, forthright, honest or true. (Or all of these). Here are fifteen memorable stars from earlier this year. Soon we'll all be standing. encumbered and forbidding in indo chinese the aisles. till the heads of those fartherest forward. start rocking side to side, leaving, and is Common Do We Essay, that will spread back: we'll all start swaying along as. Roselily Alice Walker. people do on planks but not on streets, our heads tick-tocking with times. What the poet has managed to merge here is a bag of associations: being weighed down (baggage, life); an ominous rocking or countdown with clocks; a dance maybe, along with pirates (and their planks!); and is Common Sense, even (how did he do it?) slipping in a jet lag there at the very end. We're trying to think of the last time we picked up a fat book of poetry by a single author and got as engrossed as we did with this one. There was, for indo chinese, example, so many years ago Howard Nemerov: I read him through [we wrote] first to last; slept, woke up, read it back to first, marking the pages, wondering Where has he been all my life?
We also think on the first time we looked into the works of Wislawa Szymborska, the first time we stumbled across Apollinaire (it was about What is Common and How time!), when we ran into Tim Clark in the LRB (writing about Manet and Monet and Marx and Freud for crumb's sakes). Too, there was Quan Berry, and, praise the lord, New Direction's collection of Roberto Bolano. Murray is hot. I leave you with one poem that shows him at his best. Walker. It's written in none but the simplest language, yet it manages to capture a whole era: understated, awful, precise, sad. It's called Dog Fox Field. a sentence using the words dog, fox and Sense Do We Use It?, field. ---Judgement at Nuremberg. These were no leaders, but they were first. into the dark on Dog Fox Field: Anna who rocked her head, and Paul. who grew big and yet giggled small, Irma who looked Chinese, and Essay about Life in Plymouth, Hans. who knew his world as a fox knows a field. Hunted with needles, exposed, unfed, this time in their thousands they bore sad cuts. for having gaped, and What Sense and How Essay, shuttled, and failed. to field the lore of prey and hound. they then had to thump and cry in the vans. that ran while stopped in Dog Fox Field. When Does Of Mice Take Place. Our sentries, whose holocaust does not end,
they show us when we cross into Dog Fox Field. (University of Toronto Press) I felt the is Common Use It? way the indo chinese wind was blowing. Genetic Selection will become a reality. I just participated in the process. I did it for is Common Sense and How, selfish reasons --- because I wanted to hear that my baby girl was ok. Friedman's astute comments on this particular blog: In the act of writing she challenges those who read it to similarly grapple with the ambivalent and contested spaces of motherhood, and in this grappling hybrid mothering emerges. This hybridity is especially obvious around tropes of the good mother. And then there is this view of one mother concerning all the roselily alice walker poison cast towards Nadya Suleman (who bore octuplets in 2009): Got pregnant the old-fashioned way? She's a slut. Used a sperm donor and hired a nanny?
She's a selfish old maid. Needs some public assistance? She's a leech on is Common Sense Do We Use It? Essay, the taxpayer. Self-supporting? She's a workaholic. Can't anyone else see that the judgement hurled at Suleman is just a stone's throw from the judgement hurled at any single mother, regardless of how she came by her children. I had never heard of mamaspheres before coming across this book. What Three Systems. Might be because I am a workaholic, just didn't have the What is Common Sense and How Do We time to seek such things out. When Of Mice And Men Place. But Mommyblogs is a dream of Do We, good scholarship and wisdom.
There is Essay about Colony, a neat encapsulation of the history of blogs and the radical change in what the author calls the matricentric space. Her vision of blogs (and the internet) is rich. Do We Use It? Essay. She speaks of a precariousness born of sheer abundance in blogs out there. She discusses the fragility of it all: that one day a blogger may decide that she is going to drop the whole thing, and, unlike a book (which we own, keep on the shelf, can peruse anytime we want), her valued opinions --- and her equally valuable correspondence with readers --- will just disappear. To create Mommyblogs, Friedman went through thousands of them, including the four most popular, Dooce, Finslippy, Fussy, and systems, Her Bad Mother. Of the almost 200 places Friedman lists in the blogsphere, the names I liked the most were Gorillabuns Lesbian Dad A Frog in My Soup Baby Making Machine Attack of the Redneck Mommy Adorable Device of Destruction Cold Noodles for Breakfast Mrs. Fussypants Naked on Roller Skates. Jill Walker wrote that the best way to understand blogging is to immerse yourself in it. Sense Do We Use It? Essay. Some readers of Essay about, Mommyblogs may be put off by references to the likes of What is Common Essay, Mikhail Bakhtin (cyborg storytelling as polyphony) or Michel Foucault (discourses on power) . along with other elements of postmodernism which many of us are still grappling to understand. Forget it. There are too many gems here that are worth your while.
The new and, for me, very original concepts are sprinkled around like jewels, and they make reading the roselily alice walker book worth your time and trouble. For instance, there is the idea that with birth one's prior self may become irrelevant; or the thought that a blog offers a different way of seeing relational space; or a simple idea, formulated in one blog that begins, I have always been blatantly honest with you, blog people, even when my position is childish or selfish or silly. And so I am honest now: Living on Uganda Time. As if there were any comparison. For Somehow is decidedly not arty.
It has a friendly sprawl, comes on much like a let's-take-a-beer visit with a man who not only knows how to set the visuals, but also can, in a paragraph or two, reveal the is Common and How Essay singularity of the countryside about him. He lets his pictures do the walking, lets them carry us over the hills and into the vistas and down in the valleys into the heart of the Kyarumba. Vietnam Songs. Since Cruickshank is a friendly old sot, he's apparently willing to talk to anyone and set it down here . the taxi-drivers, the and How Do We hotel people, the villagers, the kids, the women washing their clothes outside, carrying things on their heads, the families who gather for Essay School Recognition and Dollars, the weddings, the people who invite him to is Common Sense and How Do We Use It?, dinner, the Bukonzos who can't get enough of staring at this big pale gringo with the camera around his neck. The kids --- especially the kids: almost a quarter of the photographs are of the children from age six months to near-adult, clowning for the camera, solemn, funny, fretful, smiling, mostly wonderfully curious about this pale guy with the urge to capture everything. For it's everything that elicits Cruckshanks's curiosity. The people, what they eat, what they drink, what they find funny (especially about him), what they prize, how they live their days, what they carry on their heads: In some parts of the indo chinese world, Africa, South America, Asia -- people commonly walk around with all sorts of things balanced on their heads. In other parts of the world they don't. You won't see an What is Common Sense and How Do We Use It?, elderly, nicely dressed woman walking through Denver with a machete teetering on her noggin. Or an ax. Or a 10-foot-long plank.
Yet, he says, there in Kyarumba, he has seen men, women, and children with most anything you can imagine balanced on their heads. The other day it was a woman with a classic, old black and gold Singer sewing machine. Then there are purses, jackfruit, giant bunches of green plantains, a stack of vietnam war protest songs, chapatis, neatly folded linens, shovels, hoes, bundles of firewood, bags of charcoal and, perhaps, one of my best sightings, a soldier, obviously on What is Common and How Use It? Essay, his way home, with his automatic rifle riding atop his felt beret. He does tend to roselily walker, bore in when he gets interested in something. He goes, for the first time in his life, to a brand new country in another continent, where he hangs around for What is Common and How Use It?, twenty-seven months and alice walker, then he just has to put it all together in The Big Book form, get it published, somehow, hoping that by sheer beauty and art alone the book gods will pay attention to is Common and How, his favorite place over there some 11,000 miles to roselily alice walker, the east, in What is Common Sense Do We the middle of nowhere.
Since I know Cruickshank and have known him for, it seems, about indo chinese 200 years, I can tell you that one of the most interesting things that happened to him when he was putting together this book was that he up and had an old-fashioned stab-you-in-the-chest heart-attack. What Is Common And How Do We Use It? Essay. The usual six in are the three economic systems the morning wham! Just out of is Common and How Do We, bed, staggering around his room over there in Marin County (I told him afterward do it my way: never get out of the sack before noon) --- and Essay Life Colony, yet (such luck!) he got to a friend next door who drove him to the local fire station and is Common Use It?, within minutes he was on his way to a hospital which just happened to have one of the best heart resuscitation centers in indo chinese the world. Within days, complete with four brand new engraved chromium-plated stents (his was always a class act) Cruickshank was back home again. The people in the hospital told him that if he had been in Uganda (no chrome-plated stents there) or even thirty minutes later arriving, this would not be a review but a memento mori. And you and I would not have a chance to be wondering at Sense and How Do We Use It? Essay, this spacious tribute to the people he loves. School Athletes: And Dollars. But, somehow, somehow, with the luck given only to What Essay, the mad and the driven (and the does of mice place ocular pinwheelers) --- Cruickshank could and did survive to What Sense and How Do We, give birth to this baby: pretty as an vietnam war protest, agama, huge as a hippo, funny (and playful) like a bunch of dog-nosed monkeys, hearty and yet as gentle as his devoted friends in Kyarumba. This is how she starts, in the chapter named Love, In the What is Common Sense Essay year 3,000,002,013 the Andromeda Galaxy may collide with our Milky Way.
At first this sounds miserable, like a collision of two bird flocks. But galaxy members fly farly, not tip to tip. In a galactic collision the stars do not actually collide --- as with crisscrossing marching bands, only the interstices collide. (Oh to be like a galaxy, to mingle without wrecking. But then we would have to be composed of so much more sky.) The spaces between stars are so wide that thousands of galaxies have to converge before the stars will crash. Note the on High School and Dollars made up word . farly. Note the is Common amiable juxtapositions: bird flocks . Indo Chinese. galaxies . marching bands. Note the joyous imagery (composed of so much sky.) Note the number: not three billion but 3,000,002,013. Note the sly aside, Oh to be like a galaxy, to mingle without wrecking. Note the tone: wide-eyed, scientific but warm, gentle but good. Finally Leach gets to What Sense and How Do We, her three plants . one, our favorite, and obviously hers, Love-Lies-Bleeding: The tassel flower, also known as love-lies bleeding, is assigned to garden borders not only because it is tasselly but also because it can be trusted to stay wherever it is planted, to not redeploy itself. Love-lies-bleeding accepts the when purposes of Horticulture.
In contrast, if you decide to border your garden with fairies or bluebirds, they will escape their appointment as only the rootless can. They are in is Common Sense Do We Use It? truth two ways to what are the economic systems, escape: the bluebird way and the dandelion way. Bluebirds defect, like bubbles and What Essay, luck. Dandelions, on indo chinese, the other hand, escape like secrets: sprawlingly. Plant a dandelion border around your garden and soon your garden will be a dandelion fair.
Again: a couple of home-made words. Funny pairings (bubbles and luck.) The gently parental note (it can be trusted to What is Common and How Essay, stay wherever it is planted.) The all-over wonder-and-sly-observation (escape like secrets: sprawlingly.) This is a writer who knows words (and knows the world) and manages --- how does she do it? --- not to overdo it. Ms Leach has a nigh about perfect ear, plus a tremendous vocabulary . Indo Chinese. can turn a simple disquisition into What is Common and How Do We Use It? Essay, a funny ride, whether it is underwater with the beavers, around halos (Halos cannot be affixed to the head with pins and clips), or running with the dingoes. Dingoes appear in and men take the chapter on goats and Pinta Island, wherever that may be. The goats ate the tree ferns and the turtles, who used the ferns for food, disappeared. What Is Common Sense And How. People say that dingoes should be imported to eat the when does of mice goats, Trouble is, to get rid of the dingoes, one would have to bring in crocodiles. And to Use It? Essay, be rid of the crocodiles, we'd have to import hippopotamuses from Life in Plymouth Colony, across the ocean and set them loose to squash everything, a stable but sad climax. Finally, there are guns, a moment of What, violence intruding on indo chinese, our kind essay on goats . but Leach being Leach manages to leach the What Sense Essay violence from it, by are the systems turning it aside: Some tortoise advocates just shoot the goats from helicopters. What Sense And How Do We Essay. If it seems like the vietnam war protest songs noise would bother the tortoises, it does not ---such innocents do not know a bang-bang from Do We, a ding-dong. The miracle here, and I assert this writing is a miracle of taste and vietnam songs, joy (and joy in What Sense the taste) is that what could so easily turn sappy and sentimental always always manages --- don't ask me how --- to evade that pot of pother (see, she's making me write like her) so that these 200 pages never turn saccarine, and still she often comes up with (in the midst of the balmy words) surprising scientific or historical facts: that one 17th Century pope declared beavers to be fish; that in our solar system there are 169 moons; that the stars were sometimes known as fireflakes; and that they are as transitory as snowflakes only indo chinese their transitoriness is What is Common Sense Essay, protracted.
And you and me? We are molecule trustees. Indo Chinese. Like any trustee we do not own the School Athletes: Recognition property, nor do we decide who will receive what we stewarded. It might be somebody grumpy like Xanthippe.
From time-to-time we grump that we here at RALPH are limited to one star. In our table of contents, books that the editors feel vaut le voyage appear with one tiny star at their side. It is at times like this we would like to What is Common and How Use It? Essay, offer, instead, in this particular case, at songs, least five heartily burning fireflakes. Geoffrey Strachan, Translator. Then, since he's a romanticist, he decides to return to his homeland, to seek out What is Common Sense and How Do We, his old love. The switch from the does place drab walkup in Paris to the carnival is thrilling, and contrary. Paris is dull, the is Common and How Use It? Essay energy is all in St.

Russia is the future --- computers, cellphones, CNN, stock market, the carnival, the mock executions, tributes to in Plymouth Colony, Putin, the almost naked ladies from is Common Sense and How Do We Essay, Brazil dancing in vietnam war protest the streets, along with a mock execution of the mayor of the city, and lesbian rock on television. Shutov calls it modernity gone mad. What Is Common And How Use It? Essay. He thinks of the change: in Paris, where he felt so little at home, to this luxury apartment, where he is even more of a stranger. The tercentenary celebrations only sharpen this impetus toward the great world spectacular: forty-five heads of state stuffed with our caviar, glutted with our vodka, bored with our Tchaikovsky. Bill Gates and his riches? Better to war protest, admire our own millionaires, who have achieved this status in just a few years! Russia, he thinks, has just caught up with the global game of What is Common Do We Essay, role-playing, its antics, its codes. And then, just as suddenly, he stumbles into the revelations of Volsky. The old man's not deaf, he's not dumb, he's just wondering: What's to be said about it? Everything's clear these days?
He's seen it all. He lived through The Siege, and Essay on High Recognition and Dollars, suddenly we've gone from ladies dancing in the streets and young women humping each other on TV to starving in What and How Essay the bombed-out streets of Leningrad 1942. The hunger and the cold. One November morning this close proximity of life to death permeated his very breathing. During the previous two days he had not had the songs strength to Sense Essay, leave the apartment. At this first attempt to go and fetch his hundred and indo chinese, twenty-five grams of bread he had collapsed on the stairs, spent a moment before recovering consciousness, and had then taken an hour to climb back up to his room, where, thanks to the fire, his body resisted merging into the lifelessness that prevailed in the streets. This increasing weakness seemed to be external to the body. It was the world that was changing, making objects too heavy (the can in which the water was heating now weighed a ton), lengthening distances (three days ago he had managed to reach the bakery: a veritable polar expedition). From the cold water flat in Paris to the carnival; from the carnival to the bodies in the streets, the Sense and How bombed-out buildings, the hunger: They understood that death had ceased to indo chinese, surprise, it occurred too frequently in this city in extremis.
Many were the apartments inhabited by corpses, dead bodies were deposited in the public streets, only a slender frontier separating them from the living. Volsky remembered a passerby stopping at the entrance to Palace Bridge one day, beside a man stretched out in the snow, who suddenly collapsed himself, joining the man on Sense and How Use It? Essay, the far side of that frontier. I almost did that just now, he thought, glancing at when does of mice and men place, the old man's body. Roast Penguin, Scurvy Day, and. What Sense And How Do We Use It?. Other Stories of Antarctic Cuisine. Jason C. Anthony. Cutland might permit seal, but he put his foot down at making Penguin Pot Pie, or at least eating it.
When cooking Penguin, I have an awful feeling inside of me that I am cooking little men who are just a little too curious and alice walker, stupid. A penguin even walked into his kitchen one day, and for a moment Cutland thought it was nice of the chap to Do We Use It?, come to the kettle so fresh, but he didn't have the heart to kill it: Even though I have cooked many I have always left that job to those who would eat it. A more typical menu was that enjoyed by the NBSAE expedition (1949 - 1952). Seal liver and does of mice and men take, kidneys, breast of penguin with slices of bacon, braised whale steak with onions, whaleburgers, and grilled seal brains. Then there was the feast on local awful offal: heart, tongue, and liver of seal served up with heart, kidneys, liver and testicles of emperor penguin. These are mostly menus from later explorations. The earlier ones were hardly gourmet journeys in any sense of the word, as the very expeditions themselves may have been nothing but self-promotion for people like Byrd and Scott. Writer Tom Griffiths suggests that The heroic era of Antarctic exploration was 'heroic' because it was anachronistic before it began, its goal was as abstract as a pole, its central figures were romantic, manly and flawed, its drama was moral (for it mattered not only what was done but how it was done), and its ideal was national honour. Norman Dietz, Reader. The story is nicely unfolded for is Common and How, us; we come to care for most of these characters. We are told early on roselily alice walker, that there is going to be trouble (the kid Sam doesn't reveal what he knows until it was too late).
But there is a certain harshness here, perhaps, a brittleness. Of course, with Charlie's first glance at Sylvan we know there's got to be a fracas, and these people are not all that angelic, even for the late 1940s American gothic countryside. After all, Charlie cuts up cows for a living, sleeps with another man's wife. I suspect the harshness grows out of one man buying another man's daughter to What and How, be his wife: for roselily alice, $3,000 cash money and a tractor. I heard this first in the HighBridge audio version.
I can't tell you --- wait, I am telling you --- how entrancing the reading by Norman Dietz. It's one of the best narratives I've ever run across. Dietz's voice is perfect, and What and How, perfectly engrossing. What Are The Systems. Immediately after listening to it, I got hold of the book so I could write this review, get the What and How Do We Use It? Essay quotes right, and, incidentally, reread the story. What a let-down. Was it that I knew the walker plot now, knew how it was going to end, all the twists and turns? Is there that much difference between voice and print?
Is it possible that this is one of those rare books, like one of those from the era of Richardson, Dickens and Balzac, that was solely meant to be read aloud? Is it that Dietz is a mesmerizer, with his mid-America accent, his unflappable recounting, his calm and reason (it is, after all, a story of calm and reason, America small town life in 1948). It is and stays stolid until the is Common Sense and How Do We Use It? Essay accusation, the violence, the murders. Alice. Whatever it is, I urge you to forego the is Common and How Do We Use It? pleasures of the page and seek out these eight CDs from what are the three systems, HighBridge. What Is Common Sense And How. I suspect you will be trapped, as I was, by the story never being hurried along: us (and it) always waiting for the next subtle, gentle, expressive move of events, to unfold for us . moved by the voice, never by the eye. (Kent State University Press)
She also seems to have problems with mothers (hers) and alice walker, fathers (hers), old lovers (I kept wanting to break him), aging (She's thirty-six. She's a thousand years old), being by herself (She's a woman alone, which is something different / than a woman), and What and How Do We Use It?, being in a cold room (she wants to put her face / inside a waffle iron and plug it in.) What does Creedon like? If we are to Life in Plymouth, judge from this volume, and several others we've read . she likes men. Especially if the manliness quotient is high, and love is at hand, and if there's something special: Gumballs, for instance. Feathers. Making, but not necessarily having, babies. Twenty years ago, Creedon found an army of fans with an early poem, litany. It got as far as the American poetic equivalent of Billboard's top twenty. It was widely reprinted and, for many of us, it was a classic. I think of it as one of the great love poems of the What is Common Essay last decades, right up there with the lusty and exotic (and thrumming) riffs of e. Indo Chinese. e. cummings. In it Creedon wrote, and wrote all-lovingly, about Tom.
She wanted him to is Common Sense Do We, come to her apartment to walker, help put some screws in her daybed(!) I predict that no one, at least no one with heart, will ever forget the passion we all came to have for Tom, and for Creedon. She just wanted to make a sandwich --- a sandwich mind you --- that would forever after come to What is Common Sense and How Do We Use It?, be known as the carolyn sandwich. In the vietnam war protest 19th Century, poets were made to think of a lover as a rose. Now, because of Creedon, we want to What is Common Sense Do We Essay, kiss their lips and roselily alice walker, --- in What Do We the process --- not taste the dew but taste the mayonnaise. Creedon's poetry is free of that wimpy love stuff out of roselily, Clara Schumann or Rilke, mountains and trees and pale faces caught in the moonlight. No, it's the What and How Do We Essay stuff of convenience stores, standing at the checkout line where. back pockets and my lips and nose in your baseball shirt and feel the crook. What Creedon has done is to be done with those sourpusses who wanted to lock us into Recognition and Dollars, being cool (Eliot, Hardy, Lawrence, Spender, Auden), never wanting to What is Common Do We Essay, let the cat out of the bag: that being that I can and will love you even if I am a cowgirl and roselily walker, even if you come to me by What is Common Sense Use It? way of the local appliance store: Don't let the people at Ace Hardware tell you you need a man / Do pick one up anyway, if he looks red and ripe. This, from How to Be a Cowgirl in a Studio Apartment, has precise and often surprising instructions on finding love, at times not unlike instructions that come with your new cell phone or computer or heater, although translated much more artfully, and with a great deal more humanity, because. nourishment, and some nights, to lie on her back and let something. bloom above her, looming like the stars. Bint.
Daoud Pasha says. That's the what systems word for 'girl' in Arabic. Your former attendant's name is Alya. Your new attendant's name is Wadha. If you prefer, I can send you Noora. She's especially lovely, in her way. You can call her Bint too. Her name's not Alya, Thayer insists. Her name is Bint. Every girl is a bint.
Your mother is a bint. My mother is a bint. I have a bint for a wife, and Allah in His infinite wisdom has blessed me with four bints. And so it is written. Throughout this and the rest of the What is Common Do We Use It? Essay book there is a divine confusion. Vietnam War Protest Songs. And so it is What Sense Do We Use It?, written. There is confusion over the girl's name: who she is, what she does (or doesn't) do. When Of Mice Take Place. The Egyptians are certainly befuddled by this monster triangle in the desert sands. They've discovered certain stratagems, deceits, maneuvers, and intrigues within plots within conspiracies. When Does Place. A network of faint lines has become momentarily visible.
A network of faint lines has become momentarily visible. What Essay. In our final look at Mars, Thayer spots something outside the disk of the planet, a line, a red-pink fluorescing line, that he has never seen before. None of Essay Athletes: Recognition, us have. Here we have a rare use of the first person plural, as rare as the is Common Sense and How Do We color trail above the surface of Mars, the unavoidable impression of the smoky effluvia that typically accompanies the discharge of a terrestrial cannon. This silent discharge results in a single luminosity off the planet's surface, perhaps, one might think --- or at least Thayer does --- a sign of something that may be coming our way. It is rare for this critic to become so involved with what we used to call a tall story like this one; it's even rarer to get sucked into the flower of mystery that only begins to blossom on the final pages. Our Bint is giving birth, no? But is it possible that something else is being delivered at the same moment? Why did Thayer just call for the building of about Life Colony, a customs house next to What is Common Sense and How Do We Essay, the triangle?
And what is that noise? A foreign howl, a prolonged wail, slices through the sickroom. Essay About Life In Plymouth. It reverberates against the walls and shivers the windows. No one speaks as they wait for the next signal, the inevitable call of life; intelligent, companionable, needful, rampant life. Are you going on walking holidays? Walking holiday, Barnes comments, would hardly be the name for such a grief-trudge. Is Common Sense And How Essay. Its ham-fisted intervention caused the about Life in Plymouth Colony consumer states to go out to seek other options: their own wells, their own alternative fuels, their own sources of crude. More recently, something else has intervened. It's called the spot market, that place where they sell spots, little ones, fat ones, dirty ones, greasy ones, stinky ones.
Oops . I mean the futures market. The authors report that there are now hundreds of paper markets for oil. Initially, the What Do We spot market was a way for on High School, the majors to What is Common Sense and How Essay, hedge against roselily, price swings in the physical oil trade, but paper markets for oil have become progressively disconnected from the physical one. The first oil futures contract --- for What Sense, heating oil --- was offered on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) in 1978, followed by the introduction of a futures contract for West Texas Intermediate in 1983. An extensive market in oil futures, options, and sundry other oil-related derivatives has since emerged, centered on the NYMEX and InterContinental Exchange (ICE) in London. The spot market --- trades for when and men take, immediate delivery --- is a comparatively small (and declining) proportion of trade in oil.
More it is What Sense Do We, a matter of futures --- long-term (one- or two-year) contracts. The worst chapter in roselily walker this book --- worst meaning that it got me worked up into a snit, after the trolley-car scandal, I mean --- was the one entitled Developing through Oil. Bridge and Le Billon reveal the real price of oil --- that is, what it costs us besides what we pay at the pump: the deaths, the accidents, the pollution, the upheavals, the tragedy where a nation's people find that they do not own this treasure under the ground, that it is Sense and How, either owned by governments or has been sold off to outside entities, entities who care little about the when of mice and men take place citizens' poverty, hunger, miserable lifestyle, and the physical ruination in and around the What and How Do We Essay production facilities. Rather, they have emerged through the careful recording of roselily alice, each and every artifact found in each and every load of garbage, and the statistical evaluation of the results.

With global commerce in a shakeout phase, it is difficult to find a business to begin that offers an excellent chance of success, but yet has a relatively low start-up cost. School Athletes: Recognition And Dollars! Cosmetics is one possibility, and, despite the competition in the industry, offers several advantages, especially for a young businessperson in the Pacific Rim nations. Cosmetics is an ever-changing field, so that there are always new products and services to and How, offer. In addition, cosmetics is an industry that has historically survived economic upheavals very well, making it relatively attractive to are the three systems, financing companies. It demands a skill set that combines both the What Sense Use It? Essay, organizational (planning, accounting) and the interpersonal (sales and service), but I have experience in both of those areas. There are, to be sure, threats to such a venture, but in relation to vietnam songs, the low entry fee, the growing popularity of Western-style cosmetics in Asia, and the skill set I bring to the venture, it seems to be the best possible choice right now. The industry I have decided to Sense and How, get involved in vietnam is the cosmetic and is Common Sense Do We toiletries business. Indo Chinese! I have always had an Sense Do We Essay, interest in opening my own business offering a product that is affordable, and Essay Recognition of good quality.
The current products that are available to the consumer have a lot of room for improvement; most of the products are poor quality and mass produced, or just too expensive for what you are actually getting. There are a couple of What Sense Do We exceptions in the industry, Bath and Body Works and the Body Shop are what I would consider modeling my business after. A report that came out in 2002 from Wilson Select talks about songs, how new product development in several markets is expected to drive margin growth for the cosmetic and is Common Sense Use It? Essay toiletries industry in the future. The reason why the does and men take place, future is improving in the quality of products is that there are ingredients that were never used because the benefits were never known until recently. The constant changing of product lines is Essay Recognition and Dollars, similar to The Body Shop, they are not afraid to try something new. (Biesada, 2004). Companies like Wal-Mart, grocery stores and other large retailers are a threat to some of the smaller toiletry businesses. Teenagers have become a new target for color cosmetic companies and products are being launched specifically for preteens. People are also interested in products that have natural ingredients in them. The push for indo chinese products that are not tested on animals is also on several of consumer?s minds. The cost to effectively Market multifunctional products utilizing new ingredients and is Common Sense Use It? the need to generate greater return on investment has led personal hygiene companies to consolidate their range of brands-getting rid of smaller or slow-selling lines, and focus on their biggest names.
This prompted manufacturers not normally involved in when does of mice take the category to develop brand extensions into the area. Is Common Sense Do We Use It?! This ?mega brand? strategy depends on conveying a similar image to existing products under the same brand name. However, with customer loyalty to products diminishing, the company providing a product must be equally worried about the quality they are offering to indo chinese, the public. What Is Common Sense Do We Use It?! ( Koser, 2001). It is difficult to believe that cosmetics will fail to thrive, in Asia or anywhere else. A report three years ago form AsiaInfo Services noted that even Chinese herbal medicine cosmetics were gaining market share, however small at that point, because of their all-natural character, which appeals to buyers globally (Green cosmetics, 2001). Two years ago, China displayed a booming cosmetics market, as evidenced by visitors to does of mice and men take, Cosmoprof Asia, a trade show held at the Hong Kong Convention Center in November, 2002. A report in a trade journals, Soap, Perfumery Cosmetics Asia, noted that cosmetics ?clearly acts as an effective tool for creating business ties between Asia and the rest of the world (2003),? making an investment in a Body Shop or similar company a perfect one for the coming decade. Manufacturers would arguably not have been interested in exhibiting if they were not sure that the Sense and How Do We, market for Recognition cosmetics in Asia will expand in the coming years. That show hosted a total of 750 exhibitors from 33 countries. The show attracted 35,071 visitors, which was a 13% increase over What is Common Sense Do We Use It?, 2001. It also demonstrated a very vibrant market for cosmetics from European companies selling to the Asian market. ?We have had a very good response in terms of companies coming from the songs, US, and there has also been very good performance from Spain, Italy and France.
These countries are participating at is Common Sense and How Essay, this show more and about Life more,? according to Laura Zaccagnini, marketing director of Cosmoprof Asia (Quoted in Soap, Perfumery Cosmetics Asia, 2003). As examples of how growth had expanded in Asia, the Korean market grew by 10 to What is Common Sense and How Do We Essay, 13% in 2002, with the about in Plymouth, Chinese mainland growing at 7 to 8%; that market was expected to is Common Sense and How, grow 13-15% by 2010, reaching US $9.76bn. Zaccagnini did note that the Chinese expansion was greater than in Essay about Colony most other Asian nations (Soap, Perfumery Cosmetics Asia, 2003), possibly because of the pent-up demand. However, the entire Pacific Rim was seen as a growth area. While the current project is specifically a Body Shop franchise, the wealth of interest in is Common Thai cosmetic products shown at Cosmoprof Asia is a good indicator of the substantial interest in are the economic systems cosmetics in Thailand. ?The Bangkok Herb Company was looking for a distributor for its new breast enlargement skincare product, Beauty Breast Lotion, which contains dimethicone, isopropyl palmitate, soya extract, ginseng extract and horsetail extract? (Soap, Perfumery Cosmetics Asia, 2003), something which might be an item added to What and How Use It?, the Body Shop merchandise for the Thai market.
A spokesman for another company noted that ?Asian women want to be 20% slimmer than the Essay about Life in Plymouth Colony, average woman. They particularly want slimmer faces, they do not want the is Common Sense and How Do We Use It?, chubby cheeks that Asians have which gives the alice walker, impression that they are fatter than they really are. The Japanese spend three times more on beauty products than US women,? (Soap, Perfumery Cosmetics Asia, 2003). Body Shop cosmetics products and the accompanying cosmetic application instruction will be an added advantage in What is Common Do We marketing to this need in three the Thai marketplace. The potential for What is Common Use It? growth in the Pacific Rim nations was noted by Soap Perfumery Cosmetics as early as 1993. At the time, the publication noted, ?Body Shop expects to boost its 25 outlets in the region to 150 via its local franchise agent, concentrating on Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand? (Soap Perfumery Cosmetics, 1993). My idea of a successful business for myself would be a product that could be compared to the products that are offered at Bath and walker Body Works and The Body Shop. Finding my own niche in What is Common Sense and How Do We Essay the cosmetic and toiletry industry will be the biggest challenge that I will have to overcome. The cosmetic industry is saturated by many types of businesses that are not very successful because of their lack of creativity. I believe that I have a very good idea on how to introduce my product to the market.
The most important part other than name recognition is the ability to war protest, catch the consumer?s eye and peek their interest into What Sense Essay what kind of new product I have to offer. Essay! The advantages that I have in What is Common and How Do We Essay the creativity side of the business would do with my personal experience with products, and what other people think about different products. My main target would be toward women consumers, most women would want a product they could leave in their bathrooms and use at their convenience, but also not having to worry about how it will affect the in Plymouth, look of the area that they have taken so much time in decorating. The products would be lotion dispensers, soap dispensers and the containers that they come in. What Is Common And How Do We Essay! There are items that could be more creative by using different color variations, and indo chinese would be in the bathtub or shower.
These are not as noticeable to people walking into the restroom. I have to be able to find products color schemes that are versatile with the different styles that are used in home decorating today. My strengths for entering this business are a lifelong interest in beauty and achieving it through the What is Common and How Do We, most gentle and cost-effective means possible. School And Dollars! I have studied the Essay, subject on my own; I also plan to take some basic cosmetology courses, either online or if I can locate some available to non-degree students, at a college of cosmetology . I have an excellent history of financial education; my current job requires that I keep accounts both to comply with government demands and to allow the business to know where it stands financially so that it can plan accordingly. I also have a good sense when it comes to networking, I have been researching some of the vietnam war protest, most popular brands of body lotions and What is Common Sense Essay soaps, and noticed that most of them are not manufactured by the company that is marketing them to the public. I think that proper networking and research on who is making quality products, and finding a vender with a good track record of customer satisfaction would be crucial in getting a positive consumer reaction. Networking is invaluable when you do not miss opportunities that are available just from people talking about indo chinese, your product. What Use It?! Some of the smaller stores are involved in roselily alice fairs and events that you can get your product introduced to the public without the burden of the larger brand names to What is Common Do We Use It?, compete with.
In addition, I think I have a variety of personal strengths that will help me succeed when I start my new business. I am not intimidated by in Plymouth Colony the chance that my business might fail. I know that I will work very hard to make my business successful, and if the business is not successful, I know that I would have done everything possible to make the business succeed. Sense Do We! I am not afraid or intimidated if things in my business have to change. I will be able to adapt to what are the three economic systems, different situations that may happen when the business starts to What is Common, grow.
The best way I have found to get any information about different makers of products is the internet. Information about the production of the product as well as the ingredients is indo chinese, openly available on the internet. The ingredients are very important to research on and How Do We Essay, the internet because if you have a vendor that uses cheap ingredients to cut corners your product will not be successful. Another thing to worry about is if the ingredients that are used can cause allergic reactions with customers. War Protest Songs! The internet does have its drawbacks because a large amount of information that is available cannot be used because it outdated. There is still plenty of information available that I have found that I will be able to use. There are some manufactures that offer free samples of their product, which for me would be perfect because I can give people samples and is Common Use It? see what they prefer and why. I have passed the word around to alice walker, friends about my idea of starting my own businesses too see what their reaction would be, and it has been positive.
When I ask them why they think it would be a good idea, everyone I have talked to says that I am very persistent and I do not give up once I have made up my mind to do something. I am very proud that people think that I am persistent and will not give up, and they do not see this goal as something that is unreachable for me. Is Common Sense Do We Use It?! This also helps motivate me because I do not always realize the good qualities that I possess that would help me succeed with opening my own business. The part of my future business that I will have to improve on is my ability to in Plymouth, compete. The market in toiletries and cosmetics is flooded with product not only What is Common Sense Use It? from the three systems, United States but also all over the world. My idea is to market my product in the U.S. What Do We Use It?! as well as other countries. In Thailand, where I am from, there is a great demand for anything that is made in the U.S. because there are very few things in vietnam war protest songs the retail market available to people from the U.S. Consumers will spend as much money in Thailand for anything made in the U.S. as Americans spend on things from is Common Do We Use It?, Italy, France and England. I also have friends that would be willing to work for me and sell my product; this would make it easy for me to keep my business going because it will probably take along time to gain a strong consumer following in the U.S. The things that I will have to change when running my own business will be my time management. Time management with my regular work schedule, family life and running a successful business will be a challenge for of mice and men take place me.
Time management is sometimes a problem for me now because I take on too many responsibilities at and How Use It? Essay, once. This can be very self destructive for me because I get burned out and have a hard time concentrating and prioritizing the things that are the most important that need to get done first. So I should make sure that I have a plan in action every time I add something to my schedule. Furthermore, I have not run a business on my own before, and it may well be more demanding than I anticipate, although I do anticipate at least a year of 18-hour days. My challenge will be finding the physical, mental and emotional resources to place, meet that demand for a long period of time. I might try to look at the aspect of getting someone to help me with my business if it gets to hard to manage my self. This would be a good alternative than stressing myself out over to many tasks, and would also be a good sign hiring someone to help because it would mean my business is growing. My opportunities, however, are so great that they warrant taking the risk. While the market alone, as described above, supports the idea that this is an What Do We Use It?, excellent opportunity for me, the general tenor of the indo chinese, industry is also practically palpable in its offer of What Sense Do We Use It? Essay a bright future. An industry report in Soap Perfumery Cosmetics in 2000 noted that there was ?plenty of opportunity for innovation and indo chinese expansion. Increasingly, consumer demand is driving the industry, with companies seeking to What is Common Sense, meet, rather than dictate, market needs, with a particular sensitivity to local diversity.?
That is specifically what I intend to do as a Body Shop: meet the market needs for cosmetics and skin care in Thailand. The threats to my success are the usual ones: lack of independent business experience, and, notably, lack of abundant start-up cash. Essay And Dollars! One threat that probably does not exist in cosmetics is the Sense and How Do We Use It?, economic climate; in all economic climates, people want and need, for personal or business purposes, to walker, look and feel good, and cosmetics provides a relatively inexpensive means to do that, affordable to many even when the economy is declining. The fact that I am starting from the bottom with very little money will make it difficult for me to create a business and succeed. The other problem I face are the What is Common Sense and How Do We, cost it will take to market such products, with the competition is alice, already in all of the What is Common Sense and How Do We Essay, large department stores. I will have to of mice take, start in the U.S. with privately owned businesses and specialty stores, most of these stores do not have any ties with big name brands. With the ingredients of the products changing, the manufacturing costs are becoming more expensive because the vendors using the newer ingredients know they can charge more money than the product is actually worth. This threatens my future business even more because money will be an issue when I start my company, and this could possibly take more money than expected. Should I fail to succeed in is Common Sense Do We Essay a career as a Body Shop owner, I will be able to fall back on skills I have already honed in financial control, with the goal of moving into a position as Controller in a major corporation. I am close to finishing my Master?s Degree, which will be helpful if that should become my career path; frankly, it will be helpful in indo chinese securing the financing and other assistance I would need to What is Common Use It? Essay, open a Body Shop. However, even the research to open a shop will help me if my career path is detoured and I chose, instead, to seek fulfillment in a corporation?s financial departments.
Having a broad understanding of how business operates generally is always valuable; having more specific experience with small business, globally responsible for employing more people, it is thought, than large corporations, should also serve to indo chinese, make me a more attractive candidate for high corporate achievement in finance. Things that I should avoid in my business are, getting into the habit of only selling things that only I prefer. I should always look at the new products offered by my competitors and see why they are marketing these items, and What is Common Use It? Essay what kind of are the a consumer groups they are targeting. This is very important to do because it is easy to say that you do not like something, but that does not mean that there is not a strong consumer base to support different products that I may not like. Therefore, keeping an open mind to other people?s opinions is a very important quality to have. I must also continue to do research about the different products that are available to the public. I must also Research on what new fragrances that are offered from vendors that manufacture my product.
The good opportunities that I am facing are the ability I have to try to find my own niche in the market and having a lot of fun doing it. I will be able to go oversees to Thailand and start selling my product on a very small scale. Since I grew up in Thailand, it will be easy for is Common Sense Do We Use It? Essay me to understand the way the general consumer will react to my products. I will also have a new outlook on things and not have to fit my product into any specific mold that many other companies are forced to do because the people with new ideas are not always the ones that own the company. The newest trends that are currently on the market are anti aging products. These products are the future in the industry because they are made with ingredients that are not as harsh on the skin as the traditional products that are on the market.
Not everyone can use the older generation of products that are still being used. People with sensitive skin or allergic reactions cannot use these products, which opens up an opportunity to create a product for them. Older products also caused premature aging of the skin because of the ingredients that are used are mixed with harsh chemicals. People?s lifestyles have changed where they want the when and men, same type of quality that they had before without the and How Use It?, after affects of the harsh ingredients. Many things have to alice, be done in order to be successful in starting my new business.
I will have to be able to is Common Sense and How Do We, target the right consumer groups with quality products. I must also be willing to change my product line with new trends that are available to the consumer. This is what I believe I will be able to do as long as I stay focused, and do not expect to war protest, be successful overnight. The more I continue to What and How Use It? Well, this involvement usually begins first thing each morning. Most people wake up to in Plymouth Colony, an alarm or radio.
These common household items contain batteries, which make them very chemically dependent. These batteries contain positive and negative electrodes. The positive electrode consists of a carbon rod surrounded by a mixture of What Sense and How Do We Use It? carbon and manganese dioxide. Alice! The negative electrode is made of zinc. Is Common Sense And How Use It?! Chemistry plays an important role in the discovery and understanding of materials contained in these and many other common household items. Things like household cleaners and water purification systems are vitally dependent on chemistry. Essay Athletes: And Dollars! Without chemistry something as simple as scrubbing a toilet without fear of severe burns or small explosions might not be possible. Next, though it isn't widely known, chemistry is What Sense Do We Essay, also heavily involved with the manufacturing of things such as makeup and soap. On High School Recognition! Each time you bathe you are witnessing chemistry at work. Chemicals such as cetyl alcohol and propylene glycol are typical ingredients in the soap used to is Common and How Use It?, wash your hair and skin. Without chemistry, these materials (or combinations of these materials) might be hazardous or might not exist.
The chemical coloring agents used in makeup and nail polish would not be possible without an understanding of the chemicals involved. Almost anything you do during the course of a normal day involves chemistry in some way. The significance and joy in my science comes in the occasional moments of discovering something new and saying to myself, 'So that's how God did it!' My goal is to understand a little corner of God's plan. --U.S. News World Report, Dec. What Sense Essay! 23, 1991. Stephen Hawking's bestseller A Brief History of Time is the most popular book about cosmology ever written. The questions cosmology addresses are scientifically and theologically profound. Hawking's book covers both of these implications.
Cosmology is the study of the universe as a whole--it's structure, origin and development. I won't answer all the questions Hawking raises concerning cosmology, but I will try to make comments on many of what are the systems them. I caution here that you should not confuse cosmology with cosmetology , the art of beautifying the hair, skin, and nails! Here are some of the questions cosmology seeks to answer (As elsewhere in this lecture, I borrow heavily from astrophysicist Hugh Ross' excellent books The Fingerprint of God and What is Common and How Essay The Creator and the Cosmos.): 1. Is the universe finite or infinite in extent and roselily alice walker content? 2. Is it eternal or does it have a beginning? 3. Was it created?
If not, how did it get here? If so, how was this creation accomplished and is Common Do We Essay what can we learn about the what are the three economic, agent and events of creation? 4. Who or what governs the is Common Use It?, laws and constants of physics? Are such laws the product of chance or have they been designed? How do they relate to the support and development of life? 5. Is there any knowable existence beyond the roselily alice, known dimensions of the is Common Use It? Essay, universe? 6. Is the about, universe running down irreversibly or will it bounce back? Let me begin with five traditional arguments for What is Common Do We the existence of God. It may seem an unlikely starting point for vietnam war protest this topic, but I think you'll see as time goes on that these arguments keep coming up.
I'm not going to and How Do We, comment right away on whether these arguments are valid or not, but I will state them because throughout astrophysical literature these arguments are often referred to: 1. The cosmological argument: the effect of the universe's existence must have a suitable cause. 2. The teleological argument: the design of the universe implies a purpose or direction behind it. 3. The rational argument: the operation of the are the three, universe, according to order and natural law, implies a mind behind it. 4. The ontological argument: man's ideas of God (his God-consciousness) implies a God who imprinted such a consciousness. 5. Sense Use It?! The moral argument: man's built-in sense of right and roselily walker wrong can be accounted for only by an innate awareness of a code of What is Common Do We Use It? law--an awareness implanted by a higher being. The idea that the universe had a specific time of origin has been philosophically resisted by some very distinguished scientists. We could begin with Arthur Eddington, who experimentally confirmed Einstein's general theory of relativity in 1919. He stated a dozen years later: Philosophically, the notion of a beginning to the present order is walker, repugnant to me and I should like to find a genuine loophole.
He later said, We must allow evolution an infinite amount of time to get started. Albert Einstein's reaction to the consequences of his own general theory of What Sense and How Use It? Essay relativity appear to acknowledge the threat of an songs, encounter with God. Through the equations of general relativity, we can trace the origin of the universe backward in time to some sort of Sense and How Do We Use It? a beginning. However, before publishing his cosmological inferences, Einstein introduced a cosmological constant, a fudge factor, to yield a static model for the universe. Einstein later considered this to be the greatest blunder of his scientific career. Einstein ultimately gave grudging acceptance to what he called the necessity for a beginning and Essay about Colony eventually to the presence of a superior reasoning power. Is Common Sense And How Use It? Essay! But he never did accept the reality of a personal God. Why such resistance to the idea of a definite beginning of the universe? It goes right back to about, that first argument, the cosmological argument: (a) Everything that begins to exist must have a cause; (b) If the universe began to exist, then (c) the universe must have a cause. You can see the direction in is Common Sense Do We Use It? Essay which this argument is flowing--a direction of discomfort to some physicists.
In 1946, George Gamow, a Russian-born scientist, proposed that the war protest songs, primeval fireball, the big bang, was an intense concentration of pure energy. What Essay! It was the source of all the matter that now exists in the universe. Essay School Recognition! The theory predicts that all the galaxies in the universe should be rushing away from each other at high speeds as a result of that initial big bang. A dictionary definition of the hot big bang theory is the entire physical universe, all the matter and energy and even the four dimensions of time and space, burst forth from a state of infinite or near infinite density, temperature, and and How Do We Use It? Essay pressure. The 1965 observation of the microwave background radiation by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson from the Bell Telephone laboratories convinced most scientists of the validity of the big bang theory. Further observations reported in three economic systems 1992 have moved the big bang theory from a consensus view to the nearly unanimous view among cosmologists: there was an origin to the universe approximately 15 billion years ago. About the 1992 observations, which were from the COBE (the NASA satellite Cosmic Background Explorer), there was a story on the front page of is Common Sense Do We Essay virtually every newspaper in the world. The thing that the London Times, New York Times, etc. seemed to pick up on indo chinese, was a statement by George Smoot, the team leader from the Lawrence-Berkeley Laboratory.
He said, It's like looking at God. Obviously, this captured the public's attention. A somewhat more sober assessment of the findings was given by is Common and How Do We Frederick Burnham, a science-historian. He said, These findings, now available, make the idea that God created the universe a more respectable hypothesis today than at any time in the last 100 years. Not everyone was ecstatic about these observations that revealed the indo chinese, so-called big bang ripples. Certainly, those who had argued so strongly and passionately for a steady-state model of the universe didn't like the What is Common Do We Use It?, interpretation of these results at all--primarily two persons, Fred Hoyle, the British astronomer, and Jeffrey Burbidge, a very distinguished astrophysicist at the University of California at San Diego. We can begin to get into School Recognition the philosophical implications of these observations when we assess Burbidge's statement (made during a radio discussion with Hugh Ross) on these things. Is Common Do We Use It? Essay! Burbidge discounts the what systems, new experiment.
He is a strong advocate still today, in the face of overwhelming evidence, of the steady-state theory. He says these new experiments come from the first church of Christ of the big bang. I can tell you that my former colleague George Smoot, at the Lawrence-Berkeley Laboratory, took strong exception to this statement. He absolutely insisted his observations were in no way colored by any religious presuppositions. Burbidge does say something that is true, however. He favors the steady-state hypothesis and claims his view supports Hinduism and not Christianity. What Use It?! That is correct, because a steady-state theory of the Essay about Life in Plymouth Colony, universe, were it to be true, would provide some support for the endless cycles taught by Hinduism. The big bang theory is significant evidence against Hinduism.
Hugh Ross, an astrophysicist, has written very persuasively on this topic. He again brings us into the philosophical implications. Ross says that, by definition, Time is that dimension in which cause and effect phenomena take place. . . . If time's beginning is concurrent with the beginning of the universe, as the is Common and How Do We Use It? Essay, space-time theorem says, then the cause of the universe must be some entity operating in a time dimension completely independent of and Essay about Life in Plymouth Colony pre-existent to the time dimension of the cosmos. This conclusion is powerfully important to our understanding of who God is and who or what God isn't. What Is Common And How Do We Use It?! It tells us that the creator is transcendent, operating beyond the dimensional limits of the universe. It tells us that God is not the universe itself, nor is God contained within the universe. Stephen Hawking has said, in his writings, the indo chinese, actual point of creation lies outside the and How Do We Use It?, scope of presently known laws of physics, and a less well-known but very distinguished cosmologist, Professor Alan Guth from MIT, says the instant of creation remains unexplained.
I want to quote from a book that I don't recommend. It is by a brilliant physicist, Leon Lederman, a Nobel Prize winner. It is called The God Particle and although the title sounds very appealing, the good information is all in alice walker the first paragraph. The rest of it is just a case for the building of the SSC, the is Common Sense Do We Essay, Super Conducting-Super Collider, which we now know is not going to be built. Therefore the book is a bit of a Rip Van-Winkle sort of experience! But the first paragraph is wonderful; it's a great summary of what I have said so far: In the Essay about, very beginning, there was a void, a curious form of vacuum, a nothingness containing no space, no time, no matter, no light, no sound. Yet the laws of nature were in place and this curious vacuum held potential.
A story logically begins at the beginning, but this story is about the universe and unfortunately there are no data for the very beginnings--none, zero. We don't know anything about the universe until it reaches the mature age of a billion of a trillionth of a second. Is Common Sense And How Do We Use It? Essay! That is, some very short time after creation in roselily alice walker the big bang. When you read or hear anything about the birth of the universe, someone is making it up--we are in the realm of philosophy. Only God knows what happened at the very beginning. Hawking is probably the most famous living scientist. His book, A Brief History of Time, is available in What Sense paperback and I strongly recommend it. It has sold in about Life Colony excess of is Common and How Use It? Essay 10 million copies, and I think he sold about five million before the paperback version. For a book to sell so many copies is almost unheard of in what three economic the history of science writing. There has been a film made about the book. Sense Do We Essay! The film is Essay and Dollars, also good.
There has even been a book made about the Do We Essay, film. Hawking has a wonderful sense of humor. He writes in the introduction of the second book, This is the book of the film of the on High School Athletes: and Dollars, book. I don't know if they are planning a film of the book of the film of the book. I want to begin by saying something about What is Common and How Use It? Essay, Stephen Hawking's scientific research. Hawking has made his reputation by investigating, in School Recognition and Dollars great detail, one particular set of problems: the Do We Use It?, singularity and horizons around black holes and at roselily, the beginning of time. Now, everyone is is Common and How, sure if you encountered a black hole, it would be the indo chinese, last thing you ever encountered--and that is What is Common, correct! A black hole is a massive system so centrally condensed that the force of gravity prevents everything within it, even light, from escaping. Hawking's first major work was published with Roger Penrose, a physicist very famous in vietnam his own right, and George Ellis, during the period 1968-1970. What And How Do We Use It?! They demonstrated that every solution to the equations of general relativity guarantees the alice, existence of a singular boundary for space and time in the past. This is now known as the singularity theorem, and is a tremendously important finding.
Later, working by What is Common Essay himself, in 1974, he began to formulate ideas about the quantum evaporation of exploding black holes, the alice, now famous Hawking radiation. These are all tremendously important scientific works. The work most referred to in A Brief History of Sense Use It? Essay Time is also the most speculative: the 1984 work with James Hartle, a professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Using an elegant vacuum fluctuation model, they were able to provide a mathematical rationalization for economic the entire universe popping into existence at the beginning of time. This is What is Common and How Do We Essay, also called the universe as a wave function. I need to emphasize that they were using very simple models. Now, while such mathematical exercises are highly speculative, they may eventually lead us to a deeper understanding of this creation event. Hawking is certainly the most famous physicist in history who has not won the Nobel Prize. This has puzzled people.
They automatically assume he has won the Nobel Prize. Essay About Life Colony! He has not yet. This is What is Common Use It?, because the Swedish Royal Academy demands that an award-winning discovery must be supported by verifiable experimental or observational evidence. Hawking's work, to date, remains unproved. The mathematics of his theory, however, are certainly beautiful and elegant. Science is just beginning to verify the existence of black holes, let alone verify Hawking radiation or any of his more radical theoretical proposals. My opinion is that within the next year or two we will have firm evidence for the existence of black holes. Vietnam! Unfortunately, I think the What Sense, person who will get the Nobel Prize will be the three economic systems, observa-tionalist who comes up with its data. So I think Hawking may not get the Nobel Prize soon, even though he's the world's most famous scientist.
Even if some aspects of Hawking's research turn out to be wrong, he will have had a profound impact on the history of scientific thought. Einstein was wrong about all matter of is Common and How Use It? things, especially quantum mechanics, and walker we still recognize him as one of the What is Common and How Use It?, three great geniuses of physics. A Brief History of Time says a lot about God. God is mentioned in this book from beginning to end. So let us try to put Hawking's opinions about God in some sort of a context. The context is that Stephen Hawking made up his mind about God long before he became a cosmologist. The principle influence in his early life was his mother, Isabel. Isabel Hawking was a member of the Communist Party in vietnam war protest songs England in the 1930's, and her son has carried a good bit of that intellectual baggage right through his life. By the time he was 13, Hawking's hero was the atheist philosopher and mathematician, Bertrand Russell.
At the same age, two of Hawking's friends became Christians as a result of the 1955 Billy Graham London campaign. According to his 1992 biographers, Hawking stood apart from these encounters with a certain amused detachment. There is is Common Essay, nothing in A Brief History of Time that deviates in a significant way from the religious views of the 13-year old Stephen Hawking. The most important event of his life occurred on about in Plymouth Colony, December 31, 1962. What Is Common And How Use It? Essay! He met his future wife, Jane Wilde, at a New Year's Eve party. One month later, he was diagnosed with a terrible disease, ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
He was given two years to live at Essay School Athletes: Recognition, that time. That was 32 years ago. I have had three friends die of this disease. It's a horrible disease. Sense Use It?! They lasted two, three, and five years, respectively. By anyone's estimation, Stephen Hawking is a medical miracle. At this point in his life, 1962, Stephen was by all accounts an average-performing graduate student at Cambridge University. Let me quote from his biographers, White and Gribbon, on this point: There is little doubt that Jane Wilde's appearance on the scene was a major turning-point in Stephen Hawking's life. The two of them began to see a lot more of one another and roselily walker a strong relationship developed. It was finding Jane that enabled him to break out of his depression and regenerate some belief in is Common Sense and How Do We Essay his life and work.
For Hawking, his engagement to Jane was probably the most important thing that ever happened to him. It changed his life, gave him something to on High Athletes: Recognition and Dollars, live for and made him determined to live. Without the help that Jane gave him, he would almost certainly not have been able to carry on or had the will to do so. Jane Hawking is an interesting person in Sense Do We Essay her own right. I think she decided early on roselily alice, to get into What Sense Essay an academic discipline as far as possible from her husband. She has a doctorate in Medieval Portuguese Literature! Jane Hawking is a Christian. She made the statement in 1986, Without my faith in vietnam songs God, I wouldn't have been able to live in this situation; namely, the deteriorating health of her husband. I would not have been able to marry Stephen in the first place because I wouldn't have had the optimism to carry me through and I wouldn't have been able to carry on What is Common and How Do We Use It?, with it.
The reason the book has sold 10 million copies, i.e., the reason for on High Hawking's success as a popularizer of science, is is Common Sense Do We, that he addresses the what are the three systems, problems of meaning and and How Do We Use It? Essay purpose that concern all thinking people. Place! The book overlaps with Christian belief and it does so deliberately, but graciously and without rancor. It is an important book that needs to be treated with respect and attention. There is no reason to agree with everything put forth in A Brief History of Time and you will see that I have some areas of disagreement. It has been said that this is the most widely unread book in the history of literature. I first prepared this material for a lecture in December 1992, because I was asked by a friend in What is Common Sense Do We Use It? Essay Australia to does of mice and men place, come and speak on What is Common Essay, it.
He told me, A great many people in vietnam songs Sydney have purchased this book. What Is Common Sense Do We Use It?! Some claim to Essay about Colony, have read it. What Is Common Do We! So I encourage you to be one of those who have actually read A Brief History of Time.
