The. infrastructure to host Netflix services is already in war 2006, place and the barrier to entry for Netflix is. really easy to overcome. Netflix has the platform to deliver the services already with Amazon. After Netflix has gained a large majority of market share from the “linear” television. companies which the Netflix CEO Reed Hastings suggests is satan speech, inevitable, Netflix will have to. defend its position in the market as competitors like Amazon Prime, Apple iTunes, and Hulu. attempt to penetrate market niches that Netflix traditionally fails to occupy. One of the defensive. tactics that Netflix can utilize is raising structural barriers by blocking, “channel access by. signing exclusive agreements with distributors” (Hunger, 2011) for who was holocaust content that it acquires and. offers in their content library for India. India offers a 100% foreign direct investment which can be an extremely advantageous platform for Netflix to obtain exclusive rights to content via. acquisition of Indian companies rather than the content alone.

Netflix enjoys several competitive advantages over its competition. Netflix is very good. at choosing content based on paper genocide, a very large user database to mine data from.

They are also seeking. to pursue global licensing agreements for their original content that will cut costs furthermore. Lastly Netflix is a disrupter for what their CEO calls “Linear” TV networks due to their ability to. provide niche content. This allows Netflix to give customers the entertainment they want, when. they want it and creates huge value for the company. Netflix has very simple business operations with regards to targeted in the how it generates revenue and. economies of scale. The primary means of revenue is subscription services and to provide this. service Netflix produces just under $3 million per employee working for the company compared. to the Samp;P 500 average of $428 thousand per employee. This is a six times greater operational. efficiency per employee than the 500 best performing publicly traded companies making it hard. to compete with. Since Netflix is a relative unknown in India, they will need to establish a strong and. reliable brand in order to compete with some of the other players in that marketplace who are. household names and lebanon have been doing business for many years. Who Was Targeted. If they are able to select the. appropriate content for the Indian market they are targeting, and then deliver it the right way, they should be able to effectively mitigate the risk of entering the eugenics theory, market with an unknown. The inherent problem is that Amazon is a competitor in. the streaming content market, and if they decide to renegotiate the contract Netflix currently has, it could cause problems for Netflix. By ensuring a valid Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is in place, guaranteeing a certain amount of revenue for AWS, or negotiating licensing terms to allow AWS to offer some of the housed content through their service, Netflix can help to mitigate. Who Was Targeted. Fiscal amp; Licensing. Netflix’s $3.3B in off- balance sheet liabilities and commitments are held in such a way. to reduce risk and japanese designers possibly allow avoidance of regulatory costs or taxes. A side effect and. Targeted. weakness of the organization is the possibility that this may affect the cullen poems, picture of Netflix’s true net. worth (Saunders amp; Cornett, 2008). There is no legal reason for Netflix to reallocate the. liabilities, as it is in direct compliance with the SEC and Section 13(j) of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. of 2002 (SEC, 2015).

While the appearance of a company trying to manipulate financial. holdings and incomes to look more favorable is a concern, Kanter argues that in foreign markets. this is less of a concern due to the differences in market, investor and corporate strategy along. Who Was Targeted Holocaust. with governmental regulations (2011). As of the 3rd quarter 2015 Netflix had a debt ratio of 3.58, which was higher than other. companies in the industry (Nasdaq, 2015). In order to mitigate this weakness, Netflix would. Bryant Poems. need to work on lowering the amount of their liabilities and increasing their total assets. This. would cause the ratio to lower, showing investors and other industry insiders that Netflix is less. dependent on leverage and in a stronger fiscal situation. The primary way for Netflix to who was targeted in the holocaust accomplish this with the streaming media content service. is to focus on licensing. In 2014 Netflix spent $3 Billion on licensing for film and television. content (Sweney, 2014), and reported $5.1 Billion total liabilities on their 2014 balance sheet. (Yahoo, 2014). The fact that their licensing itself accounts for 62% of the entire company’s. liabilities is william cullen bryant, indicative of how critical optimizing this aspect of their business model is. Netflix’s top investor questions FAQ reports that their original content is not only the most lucrative. properties, but also is the least expensive to carry for their customers (2015). The struggling DVD mailing service is another aspect which will need to be evaluated. Netflix has been losing customers of this service steadily since 2011, reaching an all-time low in.

2015 (Fox, 2015). By not offering the struggling DVD mail-order service in India, and focusing. more on streaming original content that will be well received by the Indian target demographic, Netflix has a good chance of mitigating this risk. By reworking existing license deals with Indian content providers who have exclusive. rights to broadcast Netflix original programming such as Orange is the New Black and House of. Cards, they have a chance of bringing their flagship products back in-house for targeted the launch in the. Indian market. MBA Level Marketing Paper Business to Business Marketing (2 Pages Max) MBA Level Marketing Paper Business to Business Marketing (2 Pages Max) Can Field Sales and/or Retail Stores Survive in the Face of who was targeted Internet Competitors? Until recently, this assignment questioned the ability of internet players to compete with traditional sales and marketing channels.

Given the rapid growth of internet sales, that question seems to have been answered. So we now flip the japanese, question over and ponder what it takes for the more traditional methods to compete. 1. For this assignment, select a sales situation where the who was targeted in the holocaust, customer may choose between a face-to-face option and an online transaction. For example, one may ask a salesperson to present their wares in person at your job site, or one may go to that vendor’s website and place an designers, order. Another example, you may choose to visit an who was in the, auto insurance company’s local office or go to their website to obtain coverage. Or, you may choose to go to a pizza joint for dinner or place your pizza order over the internet and either pick it up or have it delivered. Or, you can go to a bookstore and select your latest reading choice or have it delivered via UPS from Amazon or access it via your iPad or Kindle. In each of these cases the lebanon, “shopping experience” is very different.

This is your chance to prove that you are not a philistine incapable of artistic and sensory insights! The sales arena is full of drama—sights, sounds, emotions, and sometimes aromas (a pizza place or a department store’s cosmetics area). In most sales categories, people still prefer the face-to-face setting so they must be getting something out of the experience. Next, spell out the features and service outputs provided by the alternative online option. Who Was Holocaust. How do they compare? What are their respective advantages/disadvantages? 3. On the second page , personally score the two options (traditional versus internet) using the NPS scale most recommended by Reichheld. In addition, enlist a few colleagues and/or family members to complete the same exercise and lebanon war 2006 report the combined score.

Be sure you indicate the question or questions asked, the scale used (you are expected to use the targeted in the holocaust, traditional Reichheld approach), the data points for lebanon each of your respondents and yourself and who was targeted in the how you calculated the overall score. Material Handling System in Fms Essay Sample. Material handling equipment selection is vital in the design of an effective and who was holocaust, efficient flexible manufacturing system (Kulak*, 2005). Eugenics Theory? There are many factors to consider when designing MHS system. A properly designated MHS would be able to decrease manufacturing lead times, increase efficiency of material flow, and improve facility utilization and targeted holocaust, increase productivity (Kulak*, 2005). According to satan speech (Sule, 1994 ) material handling cost accounts for 30-70% of who was in the holocaust total operating cost, hence it is japanese designers, crucial to determine the best option for MHS. However, different MHS component would have their specific advantages and disadvantages, and there is no absolute formula in determining the who was targeted in the type of MHS to be used, and the vast amount of variables to be consider leads to complexity while designing the MHS system. The sole objective of this review paper is to explore various methods used during the designing of MHS system to be used in manufacturing plant, and also relating human factors role and influence in implementing successful MHS system.

These methods apply various mathematical modelling and decision trees to simplify multi variables of MHS components. Various methods would be then laid out and the strengths and weakness of each of these methods would be visited. Material handling system is an automated system that assists and transfer material in the manufacturing line. It functions as a continuous, intelligent system that load raw materials to paper genocide CNC machines, interconnecting the in process product to other machines for additional processes, transfer it to inspection machine for quality surveillance and finally unloading it into who was targeted, automated Storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) . Material handling equipment commonly categorised as industrial trucks, conveyors, Automated guided vehicles, cranes, storage/retrieval system, and robotic arms. Journal 1: A decision support system for fuzzy multi-attribute selection of material handling equipments. Author: Osman Kulak. In this paper, the decision support system (FUMAHES) is thoroughly dissected and discussed. (FUMAHES) is bryant poems, a method used for selection of material handling equipment based on the requirements and rules set by the designer. FUMAHES is a type of who was expert systems in which the program consists of a set of modular chunks, known as rules, frame, objects or scripts. The information is stored in repository known as knowledge base. FUMAHES is developed to paper genocide solve the MHS integration prior to implementation.

It is targeted, used to simplify the selection process, to choose the most appropriate MHS based on the rules set by designer. The rules and cullen bryant poems, sets are basically derived from the immediate specification of the production type, usually the width of the belt conveyor, the weight of the product, and many other important rules. FUMAHES system is created using Arity Prolog. FUMAHES structure consists of detailed MHS information module (IM), axiomatic design and principles. In the who was holocaust database, the material handling system information is subdivided into groups of industrial trucks, conveyors, automated guided vehicles, cranes, industrial robots and storage retrieval systems. FUMAHES has a database of up to 40 move equipment types and six storage equipment types along with their performance criteria. The category and eugenics theory, types of MHS are shown in table 1. FUMAHES is created to overcome the problem faced when only axiom approach is used.

In axiom approach, the system will not generate proper result if any of who was in the its required rules or variable is unknown. FUMAHES integrate both crisp and fuzzy criteria allowing it to be advantageous compare to other multi attribute approach. The integration of both fuzzy and crisp criteria allows the software to Counseling in School Essays continue to analyse and determine the targeted most proper MHS to be used even if the rules given are incomplete. In this program, user inputs are required for lebanon war 2006, equipment variables. Some of the input required includes cost and technical characteristics. The cost category includes fixed and variable cost pet hour where else technical category consists of targeted conveyor speed, item width, item weight and flexibility.

Once entered, the program will find the most proper equipment from the lebanon database of MHS equipment. Finally when the alternatives of eligible equipments are shortlisted, the software will rank the eligible equipment based on economic cost. In the evaluation and decision making process, alternatives are considered based on who was in the holocaust, both complete and incomplete information. In short, the FUMAHES decision support system is a versatile system to be used to determine the type of MHS component to used, as it considers both technical and economic aspects during the selection process. The system is advantageous because it is able to satan speech integrate multi attribute decision making effectively through aggregate performance scores. Targeted Holocaust? Finally it is also a critical advantage feature of FUMAHES to be able to determine the best alternatives with limited data. However the existence of unknown variable in analysis might mislead the software to choose a less desirable MHS equipment. The system also needs to be consistently updated, so that the latest MHS equipments is included into designers, the database. The figure below shows the flow chart of the who was targeted in the holocaust FUMAHES expert system. Journal 2: ICMES Intelligent Consultant System for Material Handling Equipment Selection and paper genocide, Evaluation Author: Yang Byung Park.

The structure of ICMES system consists of 4 modules such as a) A knowledge base to select an appropriate equipment type b) A multicriteria decision making procedure to choose the who was in the holocaust most favourable commercial model c) A database to store the list of commercial models of the equipment types with their specifications. d) Simulators to evaluate the performance of the equipment model ICMESE is a type of expert system environment. It is developed to resolves the limitations of the existing expert systems for MHS that failed to japanese integrate the factors that affect the overall productivity of MHS system. ICMESE focuses on the movement, storage and warehousing of targeted holocaust materials factors. ICMESE is executed in VP-Expert system environment. A total of 50 types of MHS were included into the knowledge base.

It is then categorised into two groups based on their functions, move equipment and storage equipment. Move equipment| Storage equipment| Pipes| Bulk storage systems| Conveyors| Rack systems| Industrial trucks| Automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS)| In this system, decision tree method is used to solve the analysis. Decision tree approach is used rather than just merely creating a huge knowledge base to & Bereavement in School Aged Essays identify the most appropriate equipments for each unique MHS problems. This is because creating such huge knowledge base would be impractical as the number of combination can be up to hundreds.

Decision tree method also reduces memory and time resources, as it only considers attributes that are relevant to the selection of equipments, rather than processing entire multi attribute that are not immediately connected to the current decision making. By consistently narrowing the searching requirement by looking at a chunk of decision attributes at every single time, and omitting the attributes that do not meet the requirement, hence the system has the advantage of who was targeted in the shortening the search time considerably. In the final decision where there were multiple alternatives, the best alternative would be chosen based on satan speech, rough economic estimation of capital cost and operating cost. However if there is no plausible alternatives, the system will generate an error message. In the multi criteria decision making procedure (MCDM), was developed to choose the most favourable commercial equipment model. The (MCDM) consists of two procedures, a screening process and an analytic hierarchy process (AHP). In the first stage, MHS equipments that do not meet the critical and direct specifications inputted by the user will be eliminated immediately from targeted in the holocaust further consideration.

In the paper genocide second stage, AHP is applied to targeted in the holocaust determine the best alternative among commercial models screened in the first stage. AHP is suitable because of its ability to structure complex multi criteria problem into hierarchically state. This ICMESE is the first attempt to develop a knowledge based expert system solely for MHS selections that considers the analysis in eugenics theory an integrated way. However this paper failed to do a comparative summary with available known systems because of the lack of literature. Targeted In The Holocaust? Hence it is still premature to support or vice versa since there is lack of real meaningful comparison. Further improvement and research is required to further improve this system and it is recommended that this system available to be tested under industrial situations and to compare the results with other known systems.

However the system had its drawbacks. The decision tree modelling still requires further improvement to enhance its capability and also the commercial model database should be enlarge and paper genocide, expanded so that more commercial system available for considerations. Journal 3: Improving distribution operations: Implementation of who was targeted in the material handling systems Author: Satya S. Chakravorty. This is a unique paper because in this discussion, author was looking at the aspect of human factor and their integration capability throughout the implementation period. Factors such as human resource training greatly affect the success in implementing the right MHS system. This paper discuss at length about the issues in satan speech integrating effectively both human factors and technical equipments at different phase in order for in the holocaust, them to satan speech operate at optimal level. Hence proper work design and environment is thoroughly discussed in this section. Basically there are three stages during the implementation of who was in the MHS. In the first stage both human and technical problem exist, but human problems were the war 2006 dominant issue in the implementation due to various factors. In this stage the in the main skill required is conflict management. In the second stage, human problem were loosely addressed, leaving technical issues that causes inconvenience to the implementation.

At this stage, formal problem solving technique must be in place to designers resolves these standing issues. Finally in the third stage, both human and technical issues were improved and the material handling system begins to perform at who was in the holocaust optimal level. In stage 1, there is a need for group member to understand what is expected of them and how they fit into the rest of the Counseling Grief & Bereavement in School Aged Essays team. Generally in the initial stage group members show general respect to each other and there is also general respect in formal and informal leadership. Who Was In The? However, as time progresses, members begin to compete and satan speech, challenge leadership roles, creating interpersonal conflict. The friction causes decline in honest social interaction. Sometimes conflicts arise due to functional differences that exist among one another. Some experience workers felt losses of control as their previous role were partially taken up by automated components, creating a perception their acquired experience useless or redundant. During the initial implementation period, frictions arise between experience workers and inexperience workers but were resolve diplomatically through action of the supervisor. At this stage, effective conflict management becomes an important asset in improving communication, reinforcing positive behaviour and clarifying procedures.

A proper conflict resolution would clarify conflicting issues, reinstate order and stabilise the atmosphere so that members could work together cohesively. In this phase, the role of who was supervisor is very important. He must be competent to be able to eugenics theory resolve complains diplomatically, and sometimes when there are no agreeable decision among squabbling workers, he must be firm to decide a rational unilateral decision so that the operation could continue to function. In stage 2, once the members understand their roles and position, they are now more prepared to address technical issues and have a clearer vision when encountering technical conflict when following routine procedures. Technical issues can only be effectively address in this stage because human conflicts are somewhat had been solved, allowing team members to become more task orientated and objective when addressing technical and procedural issues. In this phase, processes include identification of problems, gathering information, generating solutions, evaluating solutions and implementing solutions. Workers were also had certain level of experience to deal with the situation and who was targeted holocaust, offering valuable solutions to the operational team. In the final stage, the eugenics theory stage 3, team members would already be capable of resolving interpersonal conflict among one another and who was targeted, also effective in addressing technical and procedural issues, creating an effective environment in the plant.

Below is the chart to show the different stages that happens during MHS implementation. In conclusion, during the implementation of MHS system, it has to lebanon go through three overlapping transitional stages before it began to perform at optimal level. The stages must be well managed to reaped maximum benefits of implementation benefits. In the holocaust first stage conflict management skill was critical as human factor were the dominant problem. In the lebanon second stage, the human problems improved while the technical problem persisted, thus problem solving skill were critical. Lastly in the third stage, both human and technical problems improved considerably allowing the plant to operate at optimal level. The author states that the duration of each stages varies, depending on the types of industry, the targeted in the holocaust corporate culture before the eugenics theory implementation, the willingness of the team to change and the competency of who was first line managers. Hence it is up to the first line manager to determine and paper genocide, observe which stage the operation team is in, and who was targeted holocaust, what should they be focusing in to war 2006 be effective. Journal 4: A Hybrid Fuzzy Knowledge-Based Expert System and Genetic Algorithm for efficient selection and assignment of Material Handling Equipment Author: S. Hamid L. Mirhosseyni *, Phil Webb.

The aim of this paper is to solve the problems of material handling equipment (MHE) selection and who was targeted in the holocaust, assignment by using the hybrid approach of simulation. Although there are many researches in this area, but vastly of them are concentrate in the problem of selection and paper genocide, only a few are developing solution for both the targeted in the holocaust selection and assignment problem. In addition, the researches up until now are providing not so practical solution due to: (1) oversimplified and unrealistic assumption used, (2) fail to include some effective attribute, (3) inefficient objective definition, i.e. only considering investment and operating cost, and lastly (4) overlook the eugenics theory fuzzy nature of the who was targeted in the problems. In order to solve the selection and assignment problem in satan speech MHE efficiently, Mirhosseyni Webb (2009) use a combination of hybrid fuzzy knowledge-based expert system and genetic algorithm methods. Before that, there are some problems needed to be solved. Due to huge range of brands and models of the MHEs in holocaust the market now, it is impossible for the authors to include all of them, so they have chosen those equipment types that are only listed in satan speech the “Inter-Departmental Handling of targeted in the holocaust Discrete Parts” sub group. Besides that, this paper also includes 21 attributes in the simulation in which six of them (i.e. weight, size, direction, distance, transfer frequency and clear height) are categorized as fuzzy attributes as numeric values can be assigned to them. In addition, extra information named lines, directions and william bryant, distances between workplaces that based on users’ opinion and who was holocaust, real condition are also included together the attributes in lebanon simulation. There are two phases involved in solving the problems of MHE selection and assignment in this paper.

In the first phase, MHE selection problem is tackled by using the fuzzy expert system which built based on crisp rules and fuzzy rules. The system is used to identify a list of most appropriate MHE types with their respectively assigned factors for the handling operation. In the who was in the holocaust phase two, genetic algorithm is used to search through the solutions from the phase one to find some optimum solutions for assignment problem. In order to improve the accuracy of the results obtained, the simulation is run for 10 times for the population size of 20 which generate 200 result quantities. Moreover, the method used in this paper is also compared with other similar domain of work done by Hassan, Hogg and Smith (1985), Welgama and Gibson (1995) and Cho and Egbelu (2005) to reveal its effectiveness.

In the lebanon war 2006 end, the results generated from this paper not only can be used as a reference in designing a material handling system, the simulation software designed in this paper can also provides domain of knowledge for the engineers to solve the selection and assignment problems in who was targeted in the MHE. Journal 5: Indicators for measuring performances of morphology and material handling systems in flexible manufacturing systems Author: Olivier Devise*, Henri Pierreval. The objective of this paper is to study the existing and satan speech, new performance indicators of the pair morphology-material handling system (MHS) in helping to ease the designers in designing a flexible manufacturing system (FMS). The reason of studying the morphology and MHS in who was holocaust pair is due to the authors argues that there is a strong independence relationship between both of them. Lebanon? In the first part of this paper, the author introduces the problems faced in manufacturing systems during the time of this study. Besides, the commonly used morphology and MHS in FMS are also introduced. There are three indicators being studied in this paper, i.e. Targeted In The? (1) the operational indicator, (2) the strategic indicator, (3) the economic indicator and paper genocide, the newly introduced (4) flexibility indicator. The operational indicator is classified as efficiency measurement of the operation activities of the who was in the studied systems, for example the utilization rate of the system.

The second indicator is strategic indicator, which, it is defined as the adaptability of the system toward producing new product or in other word the system’s flexibility. Lastly, the economic indicator is the financial measurement such as the purchasing cost, operating cost or the designers maintenance cost. Three types of pair morphology-MHS systems are chosen by the authors to study their respective performance indicators, where each system has their own features and setups. All three systems are initially subjected to produce three products (A, B, and C) and later on a new product D is introduced to the systems to be tested for the flexibility. Simulation software called ARENA is used in this paper to simulate the mathematical equations of the indicators formulated by the authors. The indicator results of each system tabulated in this paper can help the designers to design a suitable FMS system for an organization with fewer troubles. In addition, the results can also be used in as decision support system by an organization’s top management. In short, the FUMAHES decision support system is a versatile system to who was targeted in the holocaust be used to paper genocide determine the type of MHS component to used, as it considers both technical and economic aspects during the selection process. The system is advantageous because it is able to targeted holocaust integrate multi attribute decision making effectively through aggregate performance scores. Finally it is also a critical advantage feature of FUMAHES to eugenics theory be able to determine the best alternatives with limited data.

However the existence of unknown variable in analysis might mislead the software to choose a less desirable MHS equipment. The system also needs to be consistently updated, so that the latest MHS equipments is included into the database. This ICMESE is the first attempt to develop a knowledge based expert system solely for MHS selections that considers the analysis in an integrated way. However this paper failed to do a comparative summary with available known systems because of the lack of literature. Hence it is still premature to support or vice versa since there is lack of real meaningful comparison. Further improvement and research is required to further improve this system and it is recommended that this system available to targeted be tested under industrial situations and to compare the japanese results with other known systems. However the system had its drawbacks. Who Was In The? The decision tree modelling still requires further improvement to enhance its capability and bryant poems, also the targeted in the holocaust commercial model database should be enlarge and eugenics theory, expanded so that more commercial system available for in the holocaust, considerations. Journal 3. In conclusion, during the implementation of MHS system, it has to go through three overlapping transitional stages before it began to perform at optimal level.

The stages must be well managed to japanese designers reaped maximum benefits of implementation benefits. In the first stage conflict management skill was critical as human factor were the dominant problem. In the second stage, the human problems improved while the technical problem persisted, thus problem solving skill were critical. Lastly in the third stage, both human and technical problems improved considerably allowing the plant to operate at optimal level. The author states that the duration of each stages varies, depending on the types of industry, the who was corporate culture before the implementation, the willingness of the team to change and the competency of first line managers.

Hence it is lebanon, up to who was in the holocaust the first line manager to determine and observe which stage the operation team is in, and what should they be focusing in to be effective. The author compared with other similar researches to reveal the Grief & Bereavement Children effectiveness of his methods, which many research paper failed to do so. Targeted? From the lebanon war 2006 comparison the author was able enhance the method and targeted holocaust, included some effective attributes that made his research work standout. Morphology and MHS in FMS are treated as a single factor in paper genocide this study instead of two independent factors as they both are strongly dependence. The indicator study in FMS helps to ease the designers’ work in designing the who was targeted in the suitable FMS and at the same time can be used as a supporting tool in the decision making for top management. However three types of systems seem too little for lebanon, the industry, should include more in the future. Material handling system is vital in in the holocaust providing the flexible manufacturing system an automated connectivity system to the entire process. We had been observing the trend that designers had been trying to solve the complexity of choosing the satan speech MHS set with expert system. Research mainly based on who was targeted in the holocaust, using database system which stores huge amount of data and specification of commercial MHS equipments.

This is because using solely the capacity and cullen bryant, experience of human designers alone is not enough. Targeted? However it is also important to note that while the technical specifications and war 2006, design is crucial for an efficient system, human factor must be considered too. During the holocaust implementation, both to first line manager and staff must be adequately trained. First line manager must also possess conflict management skills to overcome conflicts arises among team members. Devise, O., Pierreval, H. (2000). The Big Rethink Part 11: Urban Design. The fundamental purpose of urban design is to who was targeted, provide a framework to paper genocide, guide the development of the citizen. As this AR campaign reaches its conclusion, the penultimate essay attacks the who was targeted City of Doing found in modernity. In the largest-ever wave of & Bereavement in School Aged human migration, vast numbers all over the developing world are flooding from countryside to city. Most of humanity is now urbanised as new settlements, some expanding into vast megacities, mushroom rapidly ? and around them sprawling slums provide the initial foothold in the transition from peasant to urbanite. Many of who was targeted in the holocaust these new cities, like the newer parts of paper genocide old ones, are dismal aggregations of sweatshop factories and crowded residential buildings of stacked hutch-like homes. But, like the in the holocaust even less salubrious slums, these offer escape from the grinding poverty of the countryside, with its lack of education and healthcare. The first generations entering these cities and slums willingly sacrifice their lives to give their children the war 2006 education and opportunities they never had and to support dependents in the countryside. And despite the in the holocaust slums’ decrepit and unhealthy conditions, they do in a sense ‘work’: people progressively upgrade their homes, or move on, as they can afford to; and the slums are hotbeds of war 2006 small-scale entrepreneurship and holocaust creativity. Indeed it is well-intended interventions, such as construction of state-funded new housing, that tend to fail.

Slum dwellers cannot afford the rents and implicit lifestyle of the new housing, whose leases secretly fall to the better off to be sublet for profit. Seemingly somewhat contrary is the ongoing trend in Counseling & Bereavement in School Aged developed countries for cities to focus on who was in the holocaust, improving their open spaces and quality of life. Influential examples are the transformation of Barcelona, initiated by Oriol Bohigas in the 1980s as advisor on urban affairs to two consecutive mayors, and the Slow City (Cittaslow) movement originating in Italy. Designers! Such developments are characteristic of wealthier countries with relatively stable or even declining populations. Besides improving the targeted in the quality of life in japanese cities ? making them better places for leisurely enjoyment, so less stressed and in various ways healthier ? the targeted in the holocaust spreading Slow City movement also emphasises enhancing local characteristics and culture, including regional food and cuisine. It thus resists the homogenising impact of globalisation.

Yet precisely because of this it also makes a city more attractive to skills and war 2006 investment in our globalised world, where cities as much as countries compete for targeted holocaust these economic essentials, and key assets are a city’s quality of life and individuality of character. The most important and influential of current developments goes further. This is the Transition Towns movement now spreading rapidly through the towns and cities of much of the world. Its primary emphasis is on eugenics theory, building local resilience, and so sustainability, through a wide range of community and environmental initiatives. Who Was Targeted In The! Although there is much to be learnt from this movement, it is tangential to the focus of Grief & Bereavement Aged this essay. But it is strange how few architects participate in the movement and that when mentioned in architectural schools, even those within a very active Transition Town, neither students nor staff tend to be aware of this. Part of the problem seems to be architects’ reluctance to dismount their professional pedestal and muck in as equals with ordinary folk more knowledgeable and committed than themselves. Rising rapidly all over the developing world are cities of tall towers and surrounding slums. Much about the future may be impossible to predict, not least because of targeted rapid technical innovation and, particularly, the continuing exponential increase in computing power in accordance with Moore’s Law. How many of today’s gadgets and the way they have affected daily life could have been envisioned a couple of decades ago?

But other assumptions about the future seem pretty safe bets, including those underlying this series of essays, not only because they are founded on discernible trends, but even more so because they are urgently necessary to resolving a wide range of dangerously pressing issues. The most threatening of these, as earlier essays have argued, are endemic to modernity. And resolving them would require, among other things, counterbalancing modernity’s too exclusive focus on the quantitative and objective with attention also to the qualitative and subjective, including the desire to live in accord with personal values and aspirations. Without this, for reasons also argued in earlier essays, progress towards sustainability will remain elusive. Hence trends like the Slow City and Grief Children Essays Transition Towns agenda, as well as the sort of urban design advocated in this essay, are certain to prove germane to the exploding cities of the developed world, to which all such concerns currently seem utterly alien. Rural people arriving in in the holocaust the cities might willingly sacrifice themselves for satan speech dependents and who was targeted in the holocaust future generations; but their children and following generations will inevitably have, and want to realise, very different aspirations.

Nor will being able to afford consumer goodies and eugenics theory distracting entertainment persuade them to in the holocaust, compromise their ideals. They will want lives and work of dignity, offering meaning and war 2006 personal fulfilment ? what the city always promised, but delivered to only a minority, and will soon be deemed essential by most. So the challenges facing these mushrooming cities are much more than the overwhelming current concerns of number and quantity, such as housing and employment for their burgeoning populations, feeding them and disposing of wastes and emissions. Holocaust! Difficult as these are to achieve, they are conceptually easier to entertain than dealing with such psycho-cultural challenges as conceiving of cities that offer lifestyles and work of dignity, meaning and fulfilment in line with very varied individual notions of purpose, identity and personal destiny. In the light of all this, the current assumption of paper genocide more and more of targeted holocaust us living in cites and mega-cities seems less than inevitable. Eugenics Theory! Besides, in times like these when we are undergoing massive and holocaust pivotal historic change, it is william poems as likely for some trends to reverse as to continue. For instance, many analysts and commentators have been warning of problems of future food supply and security.

Our current systems are heavily dependent on who was targeted holocaust, oil for farm machinery and transport, fertilisers and pesticides. Even though Peak Oil no longer seems the looming challenge many assumed until recently, our energy-intensive agriculture is problematic for, among other things, the emissions produced, the poisoning of land and water, the loss of biodiversity and the un-nutritious food produced. Satan Speech! Its unviability and who was in the the need to offer millions dignified and meaningful work suggests there may be a return to satan speech, the land, to small-scale labour-intensive farming, to regenerating and who was targeted in the living in paper genocide harmony with the earth and its daily and in the seasonal cycles, to producing local nutritious food and leaving a long-term legacy for one’s descendants. After all, the poverty presently associated with such farming has been brought about by the corporations that are trashing the planet to maximise profits by cullen driving down prices and feeding us highly processed, unhealthy food. What is being suggested here is not the end of cities, but rather that the future might lie with a range of differing kinds and sizes of settlements, some no doubt of a sort yet to be conceived.

After all, thank to the Internet and various forms of energy-efficient public and who was targeted private transport, combining the best of paper genocide urban and rural life is now perfectly possible. ‘Trends like the Slow City and Transition Towns agenda, as well as the sort of urban design advocated in in the this essay, are certain to japanese designers, prove germane to targeted in the, the exploding cities of the developed world, to lebanon war 2006, which all such concerns currently seem utterly alien’ Besides, although global population is targeted in the projected to continue to grow until mid-century, when it will reach between nine and 10 billion, some analysts now say it will not only plateau but then start to dwindle. Wherever women have become educated, population has stabilised and in some countries declined as birth rates fall below replacement levels. This is a pattern, it is argued, that is bound to be repeated globally. Yet it could be that declining birth rates are a consequence not only william cullen bryant poems, of female education but also of mothers having to work in our neo-liberal economies. Countries with good childcare provision, like Iceland, see less of a drop in birth rates. Targeted In The! Anyway, the lebanon likelihood is that the population pressures of the present and near future may be relatively short term. From an evolutionary perspective, this population bulge could be seen as a way to further pressurise humankind to make the next jump in its own evolution ? from modernity to trans-modernity, from wanting to conquer or suppress nature to seeking symbiosis with it, crucial steps towards sustainability. So, much of the squalid urban fabric built this millennium may soon come down, both because of declining populations and so as to create more liveable cities better suited to who was targeted, future aspirations and the true purposes of cities ? something the design of these mushrooming cities maybe should already acknowledge. Climate as a determinant of design: a narrow shady street that channels breezes in Foster + Partners’ design for Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.

The challenge of sustainability will increasingly influence urban planning and design, as it does already in the advocacy for the Compact City ? dense with mixed-use neighbourhoods to encourage walking, lessen the need to commute and make public transport feasible ? and prioritising construction on brownfield rather than greenfield sites. Computer modelling and use of suitable planting can lead to improved microclimates: by channelling cooling breezes and excluding gusty downdraughts, for instance; by planting roofs to shade them and aid transpiration; by using deciduous plants for summer shading of war 2006 streets and facades; and so on. Targeted In The! Besides improving external microclimates, such measures reduce loading on mechanical equipment within buildings or help to eliminate it entirely. These and other pragmatic measures are widely known and discussed, and so need no elaboration in these few pages. Nor do such similarly significant ones for saving and recycling water, enhancing biodiversity and providing refuge for wildlife and corridors for its movement. City of Counseling in School Aged Essays Doing: Le Corbusier’s masterplan for St Die consists of object buildings dispersed in landscaped open space – a city fragmented into differing things done in different places. Another important factor beginning to receive attention in targeted holocaust urban design discussion is human health, and lebanon not only by maintaining cleaner air and water and minimising the many environmental toxins ranging from vehicle exhausts to off-gassed chemicals from buildings. In The! The epidemic of obesity and associated diabetes are due partly to the processed foods with which corporations swamp supermarkets and fast food outlets, but also because in japanese the contemporary city, hours are wasted commuting long distances rather than walking or cycling in pleasant conditions. Another contributory factor to many diseases is increasingly understood to who was, be inflammation, often compounded by the solitary lifestyles, loneliness and & Bereavement Children lack of community characterised by targeted modern city life and exacerbated by its design. These are issues we will return to in next month’s essay. Two other developments already raised in an earlier essay will also in time impact profoundly the life and design of urban areas.

First is the william cullen ongoing emergence of what Daniel Pink has labelled the Conceptual Age. 1 Second is progress towards what Jeremy Rifkin refers to as the Third Industrial Revolution 2 (TIR) ? if politicians can be persuaded to stop fighting to preserve the corporate behemoths of the Second Industrial Revolution (SIR) and the privileges of those at the top of their pyramidal command structures, all at the expense of most of us and the emerging TIR. Pink notes how following the who was migration of rote manual labour (factory work) from the developed to the developing world, and william cullen poems so the transition from the Industrial to the Information Age, rote non-manual or intellectual (linear sequential, left-brain) work is now following: call centres, accounts, even legal advice and who was medical diagnostics. Now, as wages in these countries and transport costs increase, some manufacturing is returning to the post-industrial developed world. Nevertheless, in our progression from the Information to the Conceptual Age, our cities are refocusing their economies on creativity, culture and caring (all drawing on right-brain capacities of empathy, pattern recognition and so on) ? caring because required by our ageing populations, and culture to cater for the long post-retirement portion of the lives of an educated citizenry. This suggests cities combining the buzz of the very best contemporary cities with the Counseling in School Aged Children Essays virtues of the Slow City. City of Being: The Nolli plan of Rome shows a city of who was contiguous fabric, with the open space as the figure against the ground of buildings, a city in which you are immersed and exposed.

Behind all these essays, as already explicitly stated and argued in them, are key assumptions. Central to these is that in this pivotal moment in history several epochs of war 2006 differing duration are drawing to a more or less simultaneous close, in who was particular 4-500 years of modernity along with its terminal, meltdown phase of postmodernity. The emergence of the Conceptual Age and TIR are part of this larger transition. Thus the times demand that much be radically rethought, right down to such basics as the fundamental purposes of japanese things. This is especially true of architecture and urbanism because the Modernist conceptions of their purposes, along with the associated vision of what constitutes the good life they are to frame, are so desperately impoverished.

In contrast to their too-exclusive emphasis on the objective, the Right-Hand Quadrants of the AQAL diagram, it is time to re-emphasise the many dimensions of targeted in the holocaust human subjectivity, the Left-Hand Quadrants, and to reground architecture and urbanism in these too. Their fundamental purposes need redefining in bryant poems terms of their deepest, originating human impulses to be as inspiring, ennobling and encompassing as possible so as to inspire urgently needed change. ‘Certainly the city is targeted holocaust a place of trade and manufacture, residence and lebanon recreation, education and welfare. But the quintessential and most elevated purpose of the city is as the who was targeted in the holocaust crucible in which culture, creativity and lebanon consciousness continually evolve’ Among the most memorably taunting of the graffiti slogans of Paris ’68 was ‘Metro, Boulot, Dodo’, life reduced to a meaningless, relentless round of commuting, work and who was sleep. Grief & Bereavement In School Essays! Terrifyingly, this is an exact and fair summary of the Functional City of who was targeted in the holocaust modern town planning as promulgated by the Athens Charter: urban settlements of dispersed zones for work, housing and recreation connected by circulation-only transport routes. This is human life reduced to a mere productive economic unit, its pointlessness to be compensated for by the addictive distractions of consumerism and entertainment. Indeed, the eugenics theory underlying ethos of such planning was a weird mixture of socialism and consumerism, seeking a balanced allocation of requisite facilities: one playground per so many houses; one primary school per multiple of that many houses; and so on. Town-planning manuals of the mid-20th century exemplify this dismal approach exactly and in many parts of the world towns and cities were laid out like this.

The insidious legacy of who was in the this thinking continues, if often more subtly. This modern Functionalist City is what I described in an AR essay of a few years back as the City of Doing, as opposed to the City of Being. 3 It is lebanon a city shaped only by the seemingly rational, objective concerns of the Right-Hand Quadrants. At its not-infrequent extreme, it is a city of freestanding mono-functional object buildings dispersed in mono-functional zones and to which access is gained by targeted movement-only channels lacking all the Aged Children social dimensions of the traditional street ? what in a much earlier AR essay 4 I described as the ‘wiring diagram city’. Holocaust! This is a ‘city’ in which not only is urban fabric fragmented, but so is civic life and the psyche of the citizens. In it life breaks down into discrete and discontinuous roles dispersed between different locations (home, workplace, sports field) requiring different modes of behaviour (parent, employee, athlete or fan) all isolated in a conceptual and spatial void, through which you travel in the encapsulated anonymity of car or public transport.

In such a city nobody is known in their entirety, the reductionist and mechanistic conception of the layout resulting in the avoidance of community entanglements and chance encounters, with their complexities and contradictions that provoke self-reflection, so leading to eugenics theory, self-knowledge and psychological maturation. Certainly the city is a place of trade and manufacture, residence and recreation, education and healthcare, and so on ? the in the holocaust things the city of modern planning provided for. But the quintessential and most elevated purpose of the city is eugenics theory as the crucible in which culture, creativity and targeted consciousness continually evolve. Consistent with this view, some archaeologists now speculate that the initial origins of the city are not as a place of trade but of large religious gatherings, and that it was the need to satan speech, feed these that provided the impetus to produce agricultural surplus. The city remains the best, but not only, place to who was targeted holocaust, become fully developed as a human by today’s understandings of what that means, and where tomorrow’s understandings of what that will be are being forged. To do this, the eugenics theory city must cater to the very different needs and aspirations of its citizens through all ages and stages of life, from dependent infant and then exploring child through to adulthood and in the holocaust families to old age. Adding yet further complexity to this is that the city is now home to japanese, many cultures, to some of which it is a melting pot while others wish to retain their particular traditions and lifestyles. Who Was! It is in eugenics theory helping to understand these diverse world views and their underpinning values, as well as in how best to accommodate and communicate with these groups, that disciplines like Spiral Dynamics are proving invaluable to architects and urbanists ? no matter how much their schema of developmental levels is offensive to in the holocaust, the postmodern mindset. Hence the fundamental purpose of urban design isto provide a framework (spatial, functional, circulatory, economic, legal etc) to best guide the development of the citizen as well as the city or urban area. It is lebanon war 2006 about the interdependencies and mutual development to fulfil the latent potentials of citizen and city by elaborating as richly and coherently as possible the many different places of the city and so also of the lived experience of its inhabitants.

It is an who was in the holocaust, art of paper genocide space, time and change or maturation. Time here includes the cycles of day and season, the lifespan of citizens as they grow and who was targeted mature. Time also includes the long unknown future in which cities and culture evolve and change as is healthy and inevitable, and in which buildings will come and go while the city nevertheless retains much of its unique character and identity. Counseling Grief In School Aged Essays! As with our redefinition of the purpose of architecture in an earlier essay, this returns to the centre of design consideration our full humanity, from where it was displaced and trivialised by elevating Functionalism, the quantifiable and the objective, at the expense of qualitative realms of the cultural, experiential and psychological. A city of such reinvigorated purpose would be rich in experiences and things to do and in the holocaust explore, and satan speech through this develop your personal interests and capacities, as you are socialised and develop empathy in interaction with community and other cultures. Such thoughts confirm how impoverished is much modern and contemporary architecture and urbanism. Yet we have become accustomed to a world of compact and mutely rectangular pieces of who was holocaust electronic equipment of extreme functionality and satan speech user-friendliness. If only more buildings and urban design could emulate this instead of indulging in whizzy forms that deliver next to nothing. Although the legacy of in the modern planning still lingers on, its weaknesses were soon obvious to some. In the 1950s this led in japanese designers the USA to who was in the, the formation of urban design as a discipline that would act as a bridge between the abstractions of planning and the individual buildings of architecture, providing some context for william poems the latter to respond to and embed themselves in.

The first urban design course anywhere was initiated by Josep Lluis Sert when Dean at Harvard. But the approach most germane to our argument here, which will be expanded upon later in this essay, was that taught by Professor David Crane as the Civic Design Program at targeted holocaust, the University of Pennsylvania in william cullen bryant the late 1950s and 1960s. Although many of the best urban designers studied under Crane or ex-students of his, this approach and its legacy have been too soon forgotten, perhaps in targeted holocaust part because Crane published little. William Cullen Bryant Poems! Complementary to Crane’s teaching, and hugely influential as a critique of Modernist planning, was Jane Jacobs’ The Death and Life of Great American Cities of 1961 and, to a lesser degree, the later The Uses of Disorder by Richard Sennett of 1970, which still deserves wider attention by architects. Both these books are largely about the being and becoming dimensions of urbanism, as was much needed then and still is today. World Squares for who was targeted holocaust All, a remodelling of London’s Trafalgar and Parliament Squares and Whitehall which links them, by paper genocide Foster + Partners with Space Syntax as consultants.Trafalgar Square, the classical centre of the ex-Empire, with architecture derived ultimately from the Roman imperium, is who was targeted in the now made pedestrian accessible with new stairs up the pedestrianised street in front of the National Gallery. Jacobs’ book helped fuel the japanese designers backlash against modern planning and who was targeted in the urban redevelopment among the satan speech many who were appalled at the destruction of targeted holocaust historic buildings and neighbourhoods.

This led to the conservation movement and william bryant contributed to Postmodernism, which offered cogent if too-narrow critiques of modern architecture and planning, decrying abstract object buildings for their lack of relationship to context, history and even the street wall. Targeted! These themes were taken up in Europe by the postmodern Neo-Rationalists who advocated returning to the traditional typologies of street, square and urban block. And their architecture, even if somewhat abstracted, was also based on and evoked traditional typologies so as to, supposedly, be rooted in and carry forward the past. Together these debates ? if not the paper genocide often ghastly architecture that resulted ? definitely had a beneficial impact and brought to who was in the holocaust, the work of william many architects a new sensitivity to who was targeted in the holocaust, history, context and paper genocide civic responsibilities, leading to targeted, the belated maturity of some late-modern architecture. Another significant development was the publication of A Pattern Language by satan speech Christopher Alexander et al. A book packed with ideas and wisdom, it certainly has its weaknesses, particularly the constructional patterns. Architects are also put off by the implied return to who was holocaust, craft construction of a rather crude sort, and the retro formal language. But it is bryant poems very much a book about the City of Being and Becoming, of richly articulated and varied places that will nourish and who was develop the psyche and Counseling Grief Essays a richly vibrant community life, and in which even buildings and urban spaces convey a sense of targeted in the holocaust life, almost as beings in themselves. It is a book whose time has yet to satan speech, come, particularly as it plays an targeted holocaust, important role for william bryant poems times of profound cultural change by sifting and targeted in the holocaust condensing into a usable formula the wisdom of the past so that it can be carried forward to influence the next era. A very different, and designers superficially almost antithetical, development is the emergence and increasing use of the analytic, computer-exploitingtechniques of Space Syntax.

5 This is a set of narrowly Right-Hand Quadrant techniques that provide a powerful predictive tool both for analysis prior to design and for checking proposals as they are being developed. Although immensely useful, Space Syntax lacks the breadth and attention to holocaust, all the Left-Hand Quadrants concerns of the David Crane approach. Besides, Crane had developed strikingly similar graphic techniques for analysing movement patterns that, if lacking the precision of Space Syntaxes computer-dependent methods, are not only far less narrow but also help designers to william cullen, gain a deep feeling for the forces at work around and within the area under consideration. South Kensington’s Exhibition Road shows scant regard to context. Shortcomings of current urban design.

A problem with much urban design is that it is still infected with modern, Functionalist thinking ? too limited to the Right-Hand Quadrants. This is particularly obvious in schemes of blanket zoning and mono-functional components, such as traffic-only streets and single function buildings ? masterplans of who was targeted in the holocaust a sort still being produced. To oversimplify to clarify a point, let’s contrast two opposed approaches to war 2006, urban design. One prioritises zoning, and the allocation of functions and facilities in predetermined ratios, served by transport links. The other shapes movement and public space into a spatial armature made up of many different kinds of places (streets, alleys, squares, parks etc) articulating a range of qualitatively different locations, each suited to a range of holocaust functions. Lebanon! Compared with the former, this approach is more flexible, both in who was holocaust allowing choice in the kinds of buildings erected initially and for japanese these to be rebuilt over who was targeted holocaust, time while the spatial armature ensures some continuity of character and identity. If the former has its roots in the modern City of Doing, the latter tends towards the City of Being, the model to which historic cities conformed. The difference between these approaches can be found in satan speech what at first may seem similar enterprises. Contrasting examples are Mayor Ken Livingstone’s project, initiated by his advisor Richard Rogers, to furnish London with a series of new public spaces, and Foster + Partners’ pre-Livingstone and only partially implemented scheme, World Squares for targeted in the All. 6 The first of paper genocide these creates trendily designed spaces with little regard for who was targeted holocaust context, or making meaningful connections with the william poems past, such as the who was in the holocaust repaved Exhibition Road in South Kensington; except at its southern end, this lacks the adjacent uses and eugenics theory dense hinterland to bring it properly to life. Although the best known, this is by no means the most misguidedly conceived of these spaces.

Masterplan for whole World Squares scheme with Trafalgar Square to in the holocaust, north and interlocking green spaces around Parliament Square resembling an English cathedral close. World Squares for satan speech All, designed with analytical input and advice from the Space Syntax consultancy and traffic engineers, is very different. It draws on careful study of context to draw together into a new whole two of London’s major public spaces, and makes these more pedestrian-accessible by closing streets on one side of each to vehicular traffic. Targeted In The! Equally important is eugenics theory that the scheme intensifies the contrasts, symbolic meanings and connections to history of both spaces. Stone-paved Trafalgar Square is Classical (faced by who was targeted in the the Neo-Classical National Gallery, St Martins-in-the-Fields, Canada House and the cod Cape Dutch Classical of South Africa House) and adorned with statues of military heroes, as befitting the paper genocide centre of what was Britain’s Empire. In complete contrast, the area around Parliament Square was to be a softly green and targeted in the leafy sequence of bryant interlinking spaces, redolent of that peculiarly English urban form, the cathedral close, and flanked by the Gothic Westminster Abbey and St Margaret’s Church and the Neo-Gothic Houses of Parliament. Connecting these centres of targeted in the holocaust Empire and England is the refurbished Whitehall, whose slight curve obscures one from the other, with the Privy Garden as an enticing mid-point visible from both. Paper Genocide! Foster also proposed that these spaces be linked by further upgraded pedestrian connections to other monuments in in the central London as part of his concern with ‘wayfinding’, helping visitors to orient and find their way around. The whole scheme therefore is about connections, not only spatial and pedestrian but also to history, thus attending to the cultural dimensions of the Right-Hand Quadrants. Sadly Livingstone and his team failed to grasp this and asked other designers to hard-landscape only the central space of Parliament Square, which his successor Boris Johnson rightly scotched.

Although this does not apply to World Squares, it seems that a weakness of much current urban design is that it is undertaken by architects untrained in, or without a deep understanding of, urban design. Such schemes often look orderly and well-organised at first glance, but closer inspection reveals no deeper ‘structuring’ logic. One weakness is an essential lack of understanding of how movement, its density of flow and character, generates adjacent uses (particularly retail) and provides the framework that animates and articulates the scheme and ties it into its context. This becomes apparent when it is impossible, from Counseling & Bereavement Essays, study of the movement network, to predict the location of land uses (functions) and relative land values. Missing too seems an understanding of the many temporal dimensions urban design must deal with.

Besides the cycles of the day, there is targeted phased implementation that should generate its own momentum towards completion. Satan Speech! And then the various physical elements each have different lifecycles: major ones such as boulevards and parks that give the primary order and identity to an urban area last centuries; minor streets and targeted in the lanes might be adjusted over decades; and buildings come and go in various cycles. Designers! Good urban design is thus not only spatial, it must also be highly strategic. It is thus an art of tersely understated synthesis, yet has also to be suggestive enough to both invest a scheme with character and to elicit from architects a rich array of appropriate responses over time. This capacity to allow yet condition change is a hallmark of good urban design, something that often only the trained and targeted experienced eye can judge. ‘That urban design is taught only very cursorily if at all in architectural schools ? or is replaced by superficial exercises in ‘mapping’ and so on, or offered only as an elective or masters course ? is a scandal’ Currently fashionable approaches such as parametric urbanism and Counseling Grief & Bereavement in School Essays landscape urbanism exhibit all the above flaws.

To reintroduce landscaping and nature into the city as fairly dominant elements is for many reasons admirable ? benefiting bio-diversity and wildlife, controlling flood waters, tempering the climate, providing a recreational environment for a range of outdoor pursuits and sport, and in the holocaust so on. But as with Parametricist schemes, most urban landscape ones fail for their lack of the urban dimension, such as how movement generates land uses and how the movement network can be articulated to create a variety of locations that are qualitatively different just by. virtue of their location in that net, prior to any further elaboration. The roads in such schemes may wiggle, the blocks may distort in blobby forms, but many of these schemes lack essential variety, each location being boringly much the same as any other. That urban design is taught only very cursorily if at all in architectural schools ? or is replaced by superficial exercises in ‘mapping’ and so on, or offered only as an elective or masters course ? is a scandal. This may reflect a shortage of the requisite skills to teach it, particularly in the studio, and Counseling & Bereavement Aged is apparently also yet another dire consequence of the Research Assessment Exercises: these undervalue design as something woolly and un-academic, leading to the erosion of spatial urban design in favour of the a-spatial abstractions of sociologically oriented planning. A thorough grounding in targeted in the holocaust urban design undoubtedly makes for better architects, more alert to the wider responsibilities and impacts of their designs, and better able to analyse the needs and japanese designers potentials of the surrounding area that the building should address and capitalise upon. Moreover, any training in urban design would better prepare architects to in the holocaust, undertake large-scale projects, as well as to appreciate a good urban design scheme when confronted by it and help understand how to respond to it architecturally. Another benefit is that familiarity with urban design would make architects more aware and disciplined as designers generally. Urban design operates on a larger spatial canvas than architecture and must consider longer time periods in which it involves and impacts upon major capital investments. Design is thus an iterative process involving wide-ranging research and following a rigorously disciplined sequence.

An example of an satan speech, urban-landscape masterplan: ‘Deep Ground’ plan for Longgang in China by GroundLab and Plasma Studio in collaboration. Targeted In The! Despite the wiggly roads and distorted blocks, the configuration of movement and green space system provides little inherent diversity of character and location. The architectural design process may start from many points simultaneously, including working from the general, such as context, down to the particular, and vice versa, thinking about suitable materials and their detailing and working upwards. Often a better understanding of the problem and what the architect should be striving to achieve only emerges during design. By contrast, urban design tends to proceed from the general to the particular, starting with research and satan speech analysis. Targeted In The! Then before design starts, or after only tentative exploratory forays to test potentials, clearly stated goals are formulated to guide design, and against which to check whether the Counseling design will deliver. This discipline is essential to achieving a terse yet immensely inclusive synthesis whose understated forms are nevertheless pregnant with many potentials for responding to who was, and elaborating upon what are usually only subtly suggestive cues crafted by the urban designer.

‘A city is both a cultural artefact, consciously and wilfully shaped by humankind, yet also a living organism unconsciously shaped by its own internal metabolic forces’ The particular approach briefly sketched here described as if for redeveloping or reworking an existing urban area to be part of a 21st-century City of lebanon Being, derives from that created and taught by targeted holocaust David Crane and his colleagues more than half a century ago. It is one of lebanon war 2006 those now-forgotten developments worth resurrecting, carrying forward and updating as part of the necessary Big Rethink. It recognises that a city is both a cultural artefact, consciously and wilfully shaped by humankind, yet also a living organism unconsciously shaped by who was targeted in the holocaust its own internal metabolic forces. From the former comes much of a city’s grandeur and Counseling & Bereavement Aged identity, from its boulevards and urban set pieces of squares and monuments ? although sometimes topography contributes too, as in targeted in the extreme examples such as Cape Town and eugenics theory Rio de Janeiro. From the latter, as an organism, comes a city’s viability, vitality and resilience. Designers need to keep the who was targeted holocaust former in mind, that the city is a cultural artefact, and part of the initial research ? particularly if undertaken by foreign consultants ? may sometimes include study of the local culture and customs. If a large-scale project, research might also start with investigating the natural features and & Bereavement Children forces that partially shaped both these and targeted holocaust the city ? topography, geology, hydrology, climate, ecology and so on, as well as the satan speech interdependencies of the city and its bio-regional hinterland. More usually analysis will concentrate on understanding the who was targeted in the holocaust organic dimensions of the city, a process which often includes charting its historical development (so explaining many of its particular quirks) and understanding the area to be masterplanned in relation to this history.

It is particularly important to understand the movement system, the lifeblood that. both serves and generates the land uses and much of the character and identity of the designers city. Crane developed a graphic technique for abstracting and so clarifying the role of each component of the movement network, giving much the same information as Space Syntax. But his technique also indicated something of the particular nature of each element, not only the intensity of movement it channelled but its character as, say, a ‘through way’ or ‘activity street’ such as that flanked by retail. Who Was Targeted Holocaust! As with Space Syntax, this technique also ensures that the Counseling & Bereavement in School Aged Essays eventual design is seamlessly stitched into the surrounding city, and perhaps extends and in the brings to fruition latent potentials it uncovers there. Also very important are the fine-scale surveys of land use, land value and building condition. After a period of studying the movement diagrams, along with aerial photographs, you develop a remarkably vivid feeling for the life of the lebanon war 2006 city-organism, almost as if watching a slowed-down amoeba under a microscope. Who Was In The! You can see how it is changing and why, which bits are healthy and which are blighted, and get a good sense of what is required to regenerate a blighted area, such as channelling movement through or away from it.

A key aspect of urban design is learning how to work with these metabolic forces, letting some continue or even encouraging them, and redirecting others, perhaps by subtly manipulating their momentum. To complement this Right Quadrant approach, various exercises can be undertaken to get insight into the subjective experience and perceptions of the Grief & Bereavement in School Aged locals as well as of their problems and aspirations ? the Left Quadrants. These are often facilitated using a wide range of procedures developed since the days of Crane’s programme but fairly widely used in workshops and meetings such as those of Transition Towns. What is important and meaningful to the locals is often markedly different to what the detached professionals might assume. Inevitably, different age groups have different perceptions and desires, and in our multicultural cities the contrasts between what different cultures value can be striking. This phase tends to produce invaluable knowledge, and also initiates the participation of members of the local community in order to who was holocaust, better. serve them and help them acquire a sense of ownership. Once all this research is well under way, and there is a good understanding of the objective pressures and potentials as well as the subjective concerns of the community, the urban design team can start to consider what form their intervention might take. As the initial step, goals are carefully formulated: both general goals for the whole project and others for each of designers its subcomponents, such as the street system, planted open spaces, positioning of public facilities and so on. These are then presented to and discussed with locals, municipal officials and members of the business community to further elaborate, revise and refine them. Who Was Holocaust! Again this is japanese designers one of the key participatory phases of the process that sometimes leads to considerable reorientation in the ideas and intentions of the professionals.

Only after this does design begin in earnest. The primary focus of design is on what Crane called the Capital Web, a valuable term that has fallen out of use. The closest contemporary equivalent is armature, but this seems to mean somewhat different things to different designers. The capital web encompasses the total public realm ? the streets, squares, parks, public buildings and targeted in the holocaust public transport systems ? all things paid for and used by satan speech the public. The elements on which design attention is initially focused are the movement and green space networks. In what has become almost a norm, the green space network of parks and other planted spaces tends to be elaborated wherever possible into an alternative system for moving around, independent of and interwoven with the main movement system of streets and pavements. The aim is to configure the capital web into as richly varied a system as possible and appropriate. Targeted In The! This is war 2006 done by teasing apart the movement and green space systems into subcomponents (each a place in its own right), creating hierarchies of different size, character and intensity of use (through, say, boulevard, street, residential road, lane etc and, say, large park, sports fields, greenway, pocket park, playground etc) and then interweaving these to create a complex yet coherent framework of many kinds of public places. Where these cross are points of intensity and potential encounter, a whole range of qualitatively differentiated locations suggestive of and suited ? functionally, experientially and even symbolically ? to various kinds of uses, which can each find their appropriate place. (Each place, though, might be suited to a relatively limited range of uses: hence a site axially located at the end of a main street may be suited to ceremonially civic, religious or community use.) It is this framework or armature that invests legibility, identity and choice and that persists through time with buildings being built and who was in the holocaust demolished around it, while it too changes somewhat yet ensures some recognisable continuity of visual and experiential character. ‘The city remains the best, but not only, place to become fully developed as a human by today’s understanding of what that means, and where tomorrow’s understandings of what that will be are being forged’ The art of urban design goes further than configuringa framework of many diverse places and locations: it also has to give subtle cues as to how architecture can respond to, complete, enhance and give meaning to this richly varied public realm.

Of course, many architects don’t respond to paper genocide, such cues, whether because they are diehard Modernists concerned only with the internal workings of their mutely abstract object-buildings, or because they equate being avant-garde with deliberately breaking rules. So part of an urban design might be a set of guidelines to be complied with. These might restrict to a limited range the functional types of buildings to be built in certain areas, stipulate plot ratios, cornice heights and that the buildings should follow the back-of-pavement for a percentage of its frontage. Besides visual and who was spatial reasons, there are other advantages to such guidelines, in that they might ensure a match between the capacities of the various forms of infrastructure and the loadings imposed by the buildings. Japanese Designers! And sometimes guidelines go much further in stipulating cladding materials, percentage of window to wall, ground floor arcades and targeted in the so on. Until architects acquire a more mature and expanded design ethos, which values the city at least as much as their own building, that seems fair enough. Checklist of japanese designers some urban design criteria, particularly applicable to the ‘capital web’: Looking for illustrations for this essay turned up a number of perfectly decent urban design schemes that nevertheless don’t demonstrate the who was holocaust full richness an approach such as this can result in. An ideal that often comes to mind is the compact historic centre of japanese Auch in south-west France. Within a small area it has an extraordinary range of targeted in the quite different interlocking spaces, each very aptly related to the civic buildings that face it, and that together offer a very full panoply of the eugenics theory experiences urban life has to offer. Prominent in in the the plan of the city centre are two squares of japanese designers more or less the same shape and size centred on holocaust, circular pools of identical size.

One square, alongside the cathedral and where the medieval cloister once was, overlooks a steep slope and grand stair down to satan speech, the River Gers and the countryside beyond. It is shady, quiet and contemplative, showing how the targeted essential character of a place can persist through even dramatic change. A murmuring water spout is the fountain in japanese the middle of the targeted in the large pool, making just enough sound to enhance the sense of quietness. The other square is 19th century and a traffic gyratory on paper genocide, the main vehicular route through town. Here the fountain is a boisterously splashing affair to assert its presence above the traffic noise. The square is flanked by cafes, a fine hotel and who was targeted in the holocaust the town hall that confronts, across this square and the long splay-sided market square, the main facade of the cathedral, this relationship made possible by the skewed alignment of the two squares. Japanese! A smaller splay-sided square directly off the market square sets off what is the library at who was, its end while steps up from the gyratory square lead to a long esplanade shaded by rows of plane trees and on clear days offers views of the Pyrenees. The long axis of the esplanade is marked by a wider gap in the rows of bryant trees that seems to continue into the arched doorway of the courthouse. 7. Plan of the holocaust city centre of Auch. Located in south-west France.

Auch has an armature of interlinked urban spaces of satan speech varying spatial and functional character and who was targeted mood endowing this little city with a public realm as richly diverse as that of a metropolis and which has remained visible over eugenics theory, the centuries. And so on, and so on in a richly configured network of places of strikingly different character exactly apt in targeted in the holocaust form and satan speech experiential quality to who was holocaust, their use and location, an aptness matched by the forms and decorum of the civic institutions that face the squares and the institution facing them across yet another a square. What an ideal to keep in mind as we start to regenerate our cities to their full human purpose through urban design. Busy square in Auch seen from town hall steps opening into the market square whose splay-sided foreshortening draws the cathedral forward. 1. Academic Job Search - Cover Letter. The reception your cover letter will receive is more varied and unpredictable than the other elements of your application packet. Some readers, especially at large research universities, will skip it entirely, and focus instead on more direct indicators of your academic achievements and potential: the CV, letters, and writing sample. Most often, however, your cover letter works in tandem with your CV, and represents your best opportunity to communicate directly with your target audience prior to an interview. The cover letter should not simply repeat the information contained in the CV; rather it should elaborate and frame the aspects of your academic training and background that you want search committee members to have uppermost in their minds as they consider your candidacy. At a minimum, it should contain a clear statement of in the holocaust, your research and Grief & Bereavement in School Aged Children, teaching interests, and how your qualifications match the targeted in the, requirements of the job description.

Many disciplines have their own conventions and protocols for application materials including the cover letter. Be sure to eugenics theory show a draft of your letter to your chair or the department's placement advisor. There is no perfect or even preferred style of cover letter save that tone should be that of a confident professional. Departments aren't interested in hiring graduate students (they already have enough of those). They are looking for serious scholars/teachers who will make interesting, congenial, and productive colleagues. While it is probably not a good use of your time to tailor your letter for each opening, you will probably need at least two base versions that emphasize different elements (You would not want to who was holocaust use the same cover letter to apply to cullen Oberlin as UC Irvine). You may want to who was in the customize the cullen poems, letters for the three to five jobs most attractive to who was targeted in the you.

Your cover letter should not exceed a page and a half or two at the most. No one will read a four-page letter, and lebanon war 2006, your apparent inability to communicate your credentials in a concise manner is not to your advantage. In The Holocaust. Every line of your letter should serve a demonstrable purpose. Some people have gotten excellent jobs with a brief, boilerplate letter containing no more than a short intro, a paragraph on their research, and a couple of eugenics theory, sentences on who was in the holocaust their teaching. Others use letters that discuss in very specific terms how they, their research, and their teaching would fit within the eugenics theory, existing department and institutional setting. Who Was. The choice of style is up to you, and should reflect what makes you feel most comfortable and most positive about your credentials. There are, however, circumstances where a longer, more annotated version is lebanon, more likely to who was targeted in the holocaust be helpful. The issues you should take into account when making this decision are: The size of the department/institution The extent to Grief & Bereavement Aged Children which your research is mainstream and its significance readily apparent The extent to which your qualifications diverge from those mentioned in the job ad The extent to which the institution to which you are applying differs from who was, UC Berkeley and paper genocide, the relative importance of teaching versus research Unusual circumstances or career paths. Size matters.

The larger the department, the less detailed your letter needs to be. If there are already six people working in your sub-field, they can assess and who was holocaust, translate the significance of your work to others in the department. If, however, you will be the only history of science person or the only physical anthropologist in the department, the search committee and others will likely need more help from you to understand the import of your work. Remember, if they are searching for your specialty they are understaffed in your area, and even if there is more than one person in your sub-field she/he may be on leave or otherwise uninvolved in Counseling in School, the search. Similarly, smaller departments are more likely to be concerned than larger ones about the in the, specific courses you are prepared to teach. If there are certain core courses your position needs to japanese cover, make it unambiguously clear that you are prepared to do so even if you haven't taught them already. As a rule of thumb, the more your profile diverges from the specifics of the job description (or the norm, such that it exists), the more likely you will want to say more about why you are nonetheless a strong candidate. By doing so you can turn a question mark into targeted holocaust an advantage. Highlight your strengths, and if you have time perform a little research on the department (see below) so you can explain how you would add to the department in ways that they might otherwise not have considered. Job descriptions are not always etched in stone.

If you're very interested in the job, call the department and poems, ask to speak to someone on the search committee. If that's too intimidating, call the departmental assistant or secretary. They can at who was in the, least tell you if it’s a new position or replacement which in turn can indicate whether they really need someone who can teach The Politics of Southern Africa or if Middle Eastern Politics would do just as well. They may well be willing to eugenics theory sacrifice a course in an area that the ad specified in who was in the, order to get the designers, extra teaching experience or innovative research that you have to offer, but only who was in the holocaust, if you give them the opportunity and satan speech, explain what they'd get in return. If you've taken an unusually long time to finish because you spent three years learning a new language in order to prepare for two years of original research or some other factor that enriches what you have to offer as a teacher or a scholar, let them know about it. Learning a new language, for example, is an indicator of your commitment to serious scholarship.

Think of a way to targeted in the holocaust put a positive valence on an aspect of japanese designers, your CV that you believe is likely to raise questions or doubts. Targeted Holocaust. As hard as it may be for not-yet-employed-but-soon-to-be academics like yourselves to believe, there are some individuals and departments that are intimidated by you and your institutional pedigree. There are many fine schools and departments that are convinced that every Berkeley graduate student is only interested in a position at Harvard, Princeton, or (hold your nose) Stanford. If it is bryant poems, a small liberal arts college, they may also assume that you view teaching and advising undergraduates strictly as a necessary evil. Ergo, why interview someone who will either look down their nose at us, and/or desert us for greener pastures as soon as their third book has been published and Yale comes calling.

They often don't seem to realize that Berkeley graduate students are sincerely interested in a wide range of academic settings for a variety of reasons personal and in the, professional, and, perhaps more to satan speech the point, Yale rarely comes calling. An even greater burden of proof exists if a quick scan of in the, your CV reveals that your all of your experience in higher education has occurred in a large, elite, research-oriented setting. Eugenics Theory. How can you overcome this potential obstacle especially if you're very interested in a school that you have reason to believe may be suspicious of Berkeley PhDs? It's probably not advisable to write in a cover letter that they shouldn't be intimidated by lil' old you (i.e., I'm really not very good; in fact, my advisor says I'm her worst graduate student in twenty years.), but there are ways to indicate a sincere interest in their department. One means is to do a little research, and briefly discuss how you might fit into the department and the institutional community-at-large.

There are numerous articles written by faculty about the search process that state explicitly the positive impact it can have on who was in the holocaust their impression of a candidate to Grief Aged see evidence that that he/she has taken the time to who was targeted in the holocaust learn something about them. Researching a department and satan speech, its associated programs/research centers has never been easier. A second way to targeted in the address fears of imminent flight is to provide evidence of ties to the area, the university, or lifestyle. If you are from the satan speech, Midwest, have family nearby, or even if you just spent an enjoyable summer there, add a line about it and your desire to who was in the holocaust return to your cover letter for Purdue or Wayne State. If you did your undergraduate work at a similar type of institution, draw their attention to that link. Don't assume that they will notice where you got your BA on eugenics theory your CV, and who was holocaust, make the connection. If you are applying to small, liberal arts colleges, don't just list the poems, courses you've taught with a line of boilerplate about how important you take your teaching responsibilities to be. These days, a good, small college has a list price of about $30,000-$45,000 a year, and close contact with people like you is holocaust, one of their key selling points to paper genocide parents and potential students. You are expected to targeted be more than a lecturer, and your ability to convey your recognition of that fact and a sincere interest in working closely with students matters. Advising, participating in non-academic activities, watching your students grow and mature inside the classroom and out (and having an influence on that process) can be among the most rewarding aspects of the profession.

If you value these broader elements of being a professor, let them know. In particular, if your own experience has been limited to large universities, think about describing an episode where you had a positive impact on the development of a student and the satisfaction you derived from helping him or her. At many small colleges, and large universities (including Berkeley) as well, one of the most significant pedagogical trends is fostering greater student involvement in poems, faculty research. If you can articulate how this might occur for you and their students in a brief but thoughtful manner, it can alleviate some of the concerns occasioned by your Berkeley background. Your letter typically will have four segments: the introduction, research, teaching, and the closing. Be sure to identify the position you are applying for by rank and sub-field in who was, the first sentence or two. It is eugenics theory, not uncommon for departments to be engaged in more than one search in targeted in the, a given year, and large departments may have more than one in your sub-field.

If it is an open rank position and you are applying as an assistant professor, in most cases you and your record of accomplishments will not be directly compared with those of more experienced candidates applying for it at the associate or full professor level. Rather, applicants are assessed based on where they are in their career path, and you have every chance of satan speech, successfully competing against who was in the them. In addition to paper genocide identifying the job for which you are applying, the first paragraph serves as an introduction - your thirty second commercial: what are the holocaust, three broad aspects of your background that you want to be clear in Counseling Grief in School Aged Children, their mind as they make the decision whether or not to who was targeted in the devote more time and attention to your application? The first aspect is that you come from satan speech, Berkeley, and hence one of the strongest programs in your discipline (e.g., I am in the final stages of completing my dissertation at UC Berkeley). In The Holocaust. The other two aspects that you can briefly highlight are those elements that you believe represent your strongest qualifications for the position and that, potentially, differentiate you from other candidates in the pool. For example, if the ad specifies that they are looking for someone whose research is william cullen bryant, interdisciplinary and who will strengthen a new research center focused on conservation biology, let them know in this initial paragraph that you fit the in the holocaust, bill. Bryant. Conversely, if you are applying to a small liberal arts college and you attended a similar type of institution as an undergrad, point that out here. Ask yourself what are the three things I want a search committee member to holocaust know about Counseling in School Aged Children Essays me before she/he decides whether or not my file stays in the active pile, and describe them briefly in targeted, this first paragraph.

Briefly; you will have space to elaborate more fully in the paragraphs below. Here, you just want to catch their attention and satan speech, provide them with cause to pay closer attention to the text that follows. If you've finished, mention it up front. If not, state when you expect to file - no later than the June before you would start the position. Many readers will view your optimistic prediction with a skeptical eye, and anything you can say that makes the claim appear more credible (e.g., I have written and my chair has reviewed four of the six chapters.) can help mitigate their concerns.

You can put such a statement in the introduction or wait until you discuss the who was targeted, dissertation itself. If your discipline holds its annual meeting in the summer or early fall (i.e., before application deadlines) and you had an excellent conference interview, make reference to satan speech it in the cover letter including the names of the faculty with whom you spoke. By the time people actually start to read files, months may have passed and even the strongest of impressions can fade. But they can be rehabilitated and holocaust, revived, especially if you can remind them of eugenics theory, a specific strength, ability, or issue that seemed particularly salient during the interview. Targeted Holocaust. Unless you are applying to a school that cares only about your teaching (increasingly rare), a description of your research generally follows next. The challenge here is poems, not simply to describe your research, but to who was targeted in the frame it in terms of your sub-field and discipline. The search committee, hasn't lived, eaten and breathed Post-Edwardian Hermeneutics for the past five years the way you have. And they haven't been there every step of the Counseling Grief & Bereavement Aged Children, torturous process like your friends and significant others. So forgive them for not immediately recognizing your research at first blush for the path-breaking work that it is. Who Was In The Holocaust. Departments want to war 2006 know that in hiring you, they are adding someone who will make a future contribution to targeted holocaust the discipline and enhance the reputation of the japanese, department. However, they are often ill-equipped to understand exactly how that will be true in your particular case.

Many disciplines are sufficiently broad that leading or cutting-edge research in one sub-field is barely intelligible to those in in the holocaust, others. In addition, when you became a candidate for the short list, your file will be read by paper genocide, department members outside your specialty, and, oftentimes later on in the process, by who was targeted, individuals outside your discipline as well. You need to describe the forest in which your tree resides, and explain why it matters in terms of the broader trends and issues within your discipline. Obviously, if your work is focused on satan speech one of the who was in the holocaust, classic conundrums of your field, much less in the way of eugenics theory, providing perspective is necessary than if you are addressing an emergent issue or employing an unconventional approach. If your research is particularly novel or cutting-edge, any markers of broader acceptance by other, more established scholars or scholarly organs in your field can ameliorate possible concerns about its relevance and potential importance. In discussing your work, note the targeted in the holocaust, recognition it has received in the form of designers, competitive grants, awards, publications in refereed journals, and/or presentations at major conferences. It is also important to mention where you expect your research to targeted in the go after the completion of your dissertation and the publications that will flow from it. They, especially at research-oriented institutions, want to know at satan speech, least in broad terms where you expect to go from here.

They want to see evidence of a scholarly agenda that extends beyond the dissertation. Who Was Targeted In The. You don't need to have pages written or titles blocked out, but you need to tell them in a paragraph, (two at satan speech, the most) about what questions intrigue you, and how you expect to go about finding the answers to in the them. These questions for lebanon future research may have been generated by the findings of your dissertation, unusual data uncovered during your fieldwork, or interesting side issues that you were forced to put off in holocaust, order to keep your dissertation taut and war 2006, focused. Think twice about mentioning future projects that appear entirely unrelated to your current work. Departments will want you to be firmly established in one area before you go off into another. The relative importance of teaching versus research is a continuous and not a discrete variable.

Even schools that emphasize teaching in their job listing will generally want evidence of scholarly engagement and publishing potential. It is a very competitive market for holocaust students out there, and virtually all institutions are under pressure to sell themselves via the quality of their faculty to the limited number of good students in the applicant pool. Eugenics Theory. A good marker for the relative importance of teaching versus research is the teaching load. An institution with a 3-2 teaching load (a total of five courses taught per two-semester year) will expect more in the way of and value research more highly than one with a 3-3 load. If you work in targeted holocaust, a capital-intensive area, mention your track record of gaining grants and other sources of external funding. In a similar fashion, the more the institution you are applying to diverges from Berkeley and the more your profile differs from the job description, the Counseling & Bereavement in School Children, more expansive you should be in talking about your teaching and what you have to offer their students. In The Holocaust. If you have won a teaching award at satan speech, Berkeley, don't make them wait until they read your CV to who was targeted holocaust discover that fact. For letters sent to war 2006 large universities where you will be expected to teach large, lecture courses and graduate seminars, little is needed except to in the holocaust convey that you have the necessary experience and/or background. Since the dominant pedagogical style is the same as that found at Berkeley, it will be assumed that you will be able to do the same for lebanon them.

If you have TA'd some of the courses that (based on in the the job description) you would be expected to offer, let them know. If you have not had that opportunity, but your fields and research fall within the domain of the job description, you may want to william bryant add a line about how well prepared you are to teach such courses based on your training and targeted in the, research. If your profile does not correspond exactly to the description found in the job announcement, but you believe that you could nonetheless teach the required courses, explain the Counseling Grief & Bereavement in School Aged Essays, basis for your confidence. What strength would you bring to the department that would more than make up for your otherness? Departments may decide that they don't need another conventional European historian if you can convince them that you can handle the who was, core courses and offer something new that they don't currently cover as well. Paper Genocide. In this case especially, think about in the doing some research so you can speak in more specific terms about how you would fit into and enhance the department's offerings. Help them visualize how you would strengthen them as a department.

Small colleges will want to know that you are able to teach on a more intimate basis and are prepared to eugenics theory take the time to do it well. If you give them three generic lines about how important you consider your teaching responsibilities, don't expect much of a positive response. Spend a couple of paragraphs describing your teaching experience and philosophy, and how you would take advantage of the opportunity to create you own courses. Holocaust. If you've had the opportunity to poems design and teach your own course, tell them, briefly, how you went about it and the choices you made. Don't just say you're a good teacher, tell them why. Look over your teaching evaluations and pick out one or two consistent strengths to who was highlight.

Drawing on your experience, talk about how you engage students and enhance their skills (especially writing) and intellectual development. For good, small colleges, the quality of the teaching offered to students is paper genocide, their stock-in- trade. In The Holocaust. Even the Counseling Aged Essays, most research-oriented, small colleges take teaching undergraduates very seriously. You need to demonstrate that you take it seriously as well, and can talk about it using more than vague generalities and shop-worn cliches. Wrap it up quickly. If you are going to who was be traveling for any significant portion of the job search season, be sure to let them know how they can contact you (email, cellphone etc.). Before closing, include a sentence where you list the materials you have enclosed (e.g., CV, dissertation abstract, transcripts, teaching statement/portfolio, writing samples, etc.) and are having sent separately (letters of recommendation). You will often be assembling multiple packets at the same time (as in midnight October 14th, midnight November 14th, etc.) for jobs that ask for different combinations of eugenics theory, enclosures. In addition to telling them what they should have received, it serves as a handy list for you to check before sealing the envelope.

Should you send a writing sample, even if they haven't asked for one? Unless the norm in your discipline is to never send more than they ask for, if you've been smart and have already run off 30 copies at who was, five cents per page (that's only satan speech, $1.50 for a 30-page chapter) by all means send it. That way it's in who was holocaust, the file should someone become interested in japanese, you and want to read more.
