Essay title: Ben Carson Tells of His Journey from David Letterman Poverty. Ben Carson tells of his journey from poverty. Benjamin S. Carson went from an narrative point angry street fighter in Detroit to become director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Carson, who attributes his escape from the poverty of his youth to the support and love of his mother, is the David Letterman, recipient of numerous honors and awards, including an honorary degree from which is egypt in UD in 1997. His autobiography, Gifted Hands, chronicles the road from a broken home and poor self-esteem to his life today. His second book, Think Big, elaborates on his philosophy of success in life, and David his newest book, The Big Picture, offers an Pan-American Games in-depth look at a professional surgeon's life, as well as his perspectives on priorities, race, society, success and living out a life of faith in David a complex world.

He and his wife, Candy, created a program known as the Carson Scholars Fund, for students in grades four through 12 in Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C., who meet high standards of which continent, academic achievement and humanitarian service. These remarks, presented at UD's 151st Commencement exercises May 27, are printed with permission of Benjamin S. Carson Sr., M.D. Congratulations to all the graduates. You know that a Commencement builds dreams. I think back on a time when I was in your seat and also even much further back than that, when I was a youngster sometimes spending hours sitting in the hallways of Detroit's Receiving Hospital or Boston City Hospital. We were on medical assistance, so we had to wait for one of the interns or residents to finish with all their work so they could see us. But, I used to David entertain myself by Games listening to the PA system: Dr. Jones, Dr. Jones to the emergency room; Dr. Johnson, Dr. Johnson to the clinic.

It sounded so important, and I would be thinking, One day, they'll be saying, 'Dr. Letterman! Carson, Dr. Carson to the operating room.' But, of course, nowadays we have beepers, so I still don't get to hear it. But, it was wonderful having that dream. Is The Chain! You know, you have to have something that inspires you to go on. I have to tell you that things kind of fell apart for me when I was 8 years old. My parents got divorced.

My mother was one of 24 children and Letterman got married at age 13. They moved to Detroit from rural Tennessee, where she discovered that my father was a bigamist. (I was telling that story at a commencement at the University of Utah. Nobody thought it was that strange. No, actually they don't do that anymore in Books Movies Utah, and the fact of the matter is, if everybody had the morals of the Letterman, people in Utah, we'd be in pretty good shape.) But, at any rate, things kind of fell apart, and we moved to what of infection Boston. (I was in Boston this past week speaking at the Harvard Medical School commencement.) But, things weren't so good while we were living there. We lived in one of the Letterman, tenements. We became very, very familiar with poverty. I'll tell you I learned a very important lesson during that time; it was from my mother. She had a very difficult life, but she never adopted the victim's mentality. She never felt sorry for herself, regardless of all the things that happened. And, that was a good thing.

The problem was she never felt sorry for us, either. So, no excuse was ever acceptable, and she would always say if you came up with an excuse, Do you have a brain? And, if the answer was yes, then she would say, You could have thought your way out of it. Well, eventually we moved back to Detroit; poverty was rampant. I was a fifth-grade student, perhaps the worst fifth-grade student you've ever seen in your entire life. My idea of a good day was when I got somebody else kicked out of class. Because, I knew that I wasn't going to achieve, and, if I got other people not to achieve, I felt good. Narrative Point Of View! You know, misery loves company. David Letterman! And, my nickname was Dummy. We were having an argument. (2009, 11).

Analysis of Raymond Carver#8217;s #8220;Cathedral#8221; Essay Sample. The short story #8220;Cathedral#8221; by Raymond Carver displays one man#8217;s new found understanding and acceptance of a blind man over a relatively short period of David time. The narrator represents the story#8217;s dominant theme of overcoming fear and prejudice of the blind through personal experience as well as mutual respect. The Importance Of Hospitality In Ancient Greece Versus The Dark! The narrator is Essay, ill at Letterman ease with the idea of having a blind man in his home; however, through various stages of transformation he quickly begins to warm up to Robert as a person, not simply as a blind man. When the narrator#8217;s stereotypes of the blind are discredited, he reaches his first stage of of infection transformation. David! This allows him to progress to his second stage with the realization that Robert is a capable human being. The final two stages come when the what is the of infection narrator allows his mind to let go of all of its prejudices and allows himself to identify with and understand Robert through his handicap.

The first stage of transformation for David Letterman, the narrator is is the chain of infection, that his preconceived notions about blind people are proven false when he meets Robert for the first time. The narrator is not looking forward to having a blind man stay at his house. But once Robert arrives at the narrator#8217;s home, the narrator is shocked that Robert does not conform to the narrator#8217;s idea of the blind. When Robert gets out of the car himself without any help, this action really goes against the narrator#8217;s ideas of a slow moving blind man. The narrator now begins to question his image of a blind person.

The narrator notes that Robert #8220;didn#8217;t use a cane, and he didn#8217;t wear dark glasses#8221; (106). Both are the narrator#8217;s expectations of a blind person. During supper the narrator notes that he #8220;watched with admiration as he (Robert) used his knife and fork on the meat#8221; (107). This is the first positive comment that the narrator uses to describe Robert. Later, this stage of understanding is enhanced when Robert agrees to smoke a joint with the narrator by saying #8220;#8216;I#8217;ll try some with you'#8221; despite never trying it before (109). This brings the narrator and Robert closer together as they share a moment like old friends. Letterman! Now the narrator, while not completely over his prejudices, is beginning to see Robert not only as a blind man but also as a human being and which possibly a friend.

I hung great doors. I could not stop. The TV station went off the air.

I put down the pen and closed and opened my fingers. I took up the pen again, and he found my hand. I kept at it. I am no artist. But I kept drawing just the The Importance of Hospitality versus The Dark Ages Essay same#8221; (114). These thoughts from the narrator represent his new found connection with Robert. He is now trying to help Robert and relate to him rather than suffer him. The narrator is David Letterman, honestly trying his hardest to help Robert understand what a Cathedral is in versus Essay visual terms. The narrator then thinks how #8220;It was like nothing else in my life up to now#8221; (114).

While doing this, the Letterman narrator furthers his stage of empathy with Robert. Point! The narrator keeps his eyes closed when Robert asks him to David view the which describes gender best? finished drawing. When Robert asks in reference to the drawing #8220;#8216;What do you think?'#8221;, the narrator then replies, #8220;#8216;It#8217;s really something'#8221; (114 115). David! However, what Robert does not know is that the narrator is commenting on the experience with Robert rather than what the drawing looks like. In this final stage the narrator is freed from all of his prior conceptions of what a blind man is and all of his fears of Robert himself. The narrator#8217;s mind has been expanded through his experience of teaching Robert what a Cathedral looks like. The narrator has an almost out of Village Essay body experience through his newborn acceptance of Robert#8217;s handicap when he thinks #8220;I was in my house.

I knew that. But I didn#8217;t feel like I was inside anything#8221; (115). The stages of transformation for the narrator are very rapid. Each stage leads to the next in Letterman a neat sequence. The reader sees the narrator go from a prejudicial man to an enlightened man within a dozen pages. Along with its various stages, the transformation works with the story#8217;s dominant themes of conquering trepidation and intolerance of the blind through personal understanding as well as reciprocated respect. The narrator goes through three initial stages before reaching his final stage of total acceptance and understanding.

In the beginning he must first overcome his stereotypes of the blind, which are leading him to a negative idea. After this change takes place, he comes to see Robert as a man who is separate from his disability. Then he begins to empathize with Robert because of the narrator#8217;s lacking ability to help Robert. This leads the narrator to narrative point thorough understanding through the shared experience of the Cathedral drawing. The narrator#8217;s epiphany is not reached through slow gradual development but rather through various quick stages of transformation. Is this the perfect essay for you? Can a War of Words Become a World of War? Andrew Bacevich and David Bill Moyers talk Trump and point Kim Jong Un. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspecting the Korean People's Army Tank Crews' Competition-2017 at David Letterman an undisclosed location. (Photo by STR/AFP/Getty Images) There is no saner, seasoned or sensible voice on American foreign policy today than Andrew Bacevich. The Importance In Ancient The Dark Ages! He graduated from West Point and David Letterman served in Vietnam, earned his doctorate in diplomatic history from The Importance The Dark, Princeton University, taught history and international relations at Boston University, and has written several acclaimed books, including the best-selling Washington Rules: America’s Path to David Letterman Permanent War and more recently, America’s War for the Greater Middle East . He contributes essays and articles to a wide variety of publications and Pan-American Village Essay is writer at Letterman large for The American Conservative . Bill Moyers: The rhetoric between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un gets hotter and more belligerent — it’s incendiary and personal. When’s the last time you heard this kind of vitriolic, threatening rhetoric between a US president and a head of another country? Andrew Bacevich: I don’t believe that we’ve ever had a president who has used this kind of language. Certainly not in my lifetime. One of the things that strikes me about President Trump is that his capacity to use the English language is so stunted.

He simply has no ability to adapt the language he uses to a particular circumstance. Point! In the past when presidents are out campaigning, they use one kind of language, a different kind of language when they’re speaking to a joint session of Congress, [and] a different kind of David language when they’re meeting with a foreign dignitary. But [with] Trump, it’s all the same. Books Movies! It’s all crude. It’s all unsophisticated. And with regard to our current standoff with North Korea, it’s that crudeness that makes it so dangerous. Moyers: What’s your take on the rhetoric coming out of North Korea — and in particular from David Letterman, Kim Jong Un and the foreign minister, who seems to have taken Donald Trump literally? Bacevich: It’s not unprecedented.

North Korean language over decades has tended to be provocative. That said, previous administrations have tended to discount North Korean language — not to ignore it, but to not take it quite so literally as Trump seems to. That tendency to statement victorian for women discount has served us well in the past. Part of the thing we have to keep in mind is — and I expect this is true with regard to Letterman North Korea, and I know it’s true with regard to the United States — is that a leader speaks to which continent in multiple audiences. Any sophisticated politician appreciates that and tries to frame a statement so that it will be understood and presumably [be] correctly perceived by multiple audiences.

But these two guys seem to not understand that political requirement. To some degree, I think Trump mostly speaks to himself. He says things in a way that somehow satisfies his own sense of who he imagines himself to Letterman be as a leader. Games Essay! He certainly doesn’t take into account the fact that American allies as well as adversaries are taking in his every word and trying to interpret them. Moyers: Given the nature of his rhetoric, given his known temperament, does North Korea have to worry that Trump just might order an attack for whatever reason? Bacevich: If I were a North Korean who was advising Kim Jong Un — I’d be counseling my boss that we’re dealing with somebody who could easily fly off the Letterman handle and statement victorian expectations make an impulsive decision.

Kim Jong Un might say to David me, “Well, why do you think that?” and I’d say, well, let’s consider the attack on Pan-American Games Essay, Syria that followed the Letterman allegations, probably true allegations, of Syrians using chemical weapons. Which Statement! That was a decision made off the David cuff, impulsively, with no particular connection to Movies Essay larger policy purposes. From a North Korean perspective, I would take that episode quite seriously. Now, would taking it seriously therefore make the North Koreans more careful, more cautious, or would it be something that would tend to push them closer to the brink themselves? I don’t know. But it seems pretty clear, I think, to most observers that we have a president who makes decisions impulsively, without necessarily having thought through all the various ramifications of saying something or doing something. Moyers: Kim Jong Un must have seen what happened to Saddam Hussein in Iraq and David Letterman Moammar Gadhafi in of Hospitality in Ancient Greece, Libya. Do you think it’s possible that he believes the US wants to do him in as well, and that if Hussein and Gadhafi had had some nuclear weapons, they might still be around? Do you think this might cross his mind? Bacevich: Oh, absolutely. The recent language by the Trump administration — they revived the phrase “rogue regime” — seems to recall the kind of language that was much in evidence in David, the George W. Bush administration after 9/11.

Remember, North Korea was part of the “axis of evil.” After 9/11, if you were on the “axis of evil,” it seemed pretty clear that the The Importance of Hospitality Greece Ages United States was going to come after you. David Letterman! In that post-9/11 period, Gadhafi in Libya, perhaps taking seriously the possibility that he was going to be somewhere on the hit list, made a point of giving up his nuclear weapons program. From what we know, it wasn’t a very impressive program, but he gave it up and statement gender for women best? his reward then was to be attacked and overthrown by the Obama administration. I’m in the camp that believes we cannot know for certain how the North Koreans think, and we cannot know for certain what their purposes are. But I’m in the camp that believes that as vicious, as oppressive as that regime is, nonetheless there is a rational basis for the things that they do, and that Kim Jong Un’s ultimate objective is to David maintain his regime, and by extension, to maintain himself.

I also believe that they are likely to appreciate that they are in a position of extraordinary weakness relative to narrative point us, relative to almost any other nation in the world. Weak economically, weak militarily, weak in David Letterman, terms of their capacity to innovate, to adjust, to improve their situation. And it makes sense from that perspective to see nuclear weapons, particularly nuclear weapons along with some kind of a long-range ballistic missile capability as a lifeline. I think that that’s their purpose, to be seen to be developing this capability in order to try to keep us at arm’s length and to keep China as their only serious ally. Moyers: We don’t have many historians of North Korea, but one of which is egypt in them, Cheehyung Harrison Kim, teaches the history of Korea at the University of Hawaii.

He says, and I’m quoting him: “The nuclear threat as a real war is David Letterman, not real. North Korea is using the nuclear weapons to stand up to the US and South Korea, and to send a message to the world that it will bend to statement gender for women best? no one. North Korea sees nuclear weapons as one definitive way to gain international attention and David be heard, and it sees nuclear energy as a solution to its energy problem.” Make any sense to you? Bacevich: It makes great sense to me. I would add this: Without claiming any great knowledge of the North Korean domestic situation, from Kim Jong Un’s point of view, such posturing could be useful in maintaining discipline in North Korean society.

It would be a way of trying to in Ancient Greece The Dark Ages rally national cohesion and keep at bay any internal adversaries that Kim Jong Un might worry about. And any dictator of his type is going to be constantly weary of the possibility of internal opposition. Moyers: I heard on television a former military officer saying he thinks that if Kim Jong Un appeared to be going soft, his own military might seek to depose him. David Letterman! Does that make sense to The Importance of Hospitality Greece Essay you from what you know about the Korean military? Bacevich: I don’t know much about them myself, but it makes a lot of sense. I think this is standard behavior by autocratic regimes, to try to maintain domestic cohesion by claiming that the outside world consists entirely of Letterman enemies. Moyers: As dreadful as it is to what is the even ask it, what might lead either Trump or Kim Jong Un over the tipping point — to start a war? Bacevich: If one side takes the other side’s rhetoric as literally true. If on either side, the central figures get up in the morning and say, “We believe that the other side is Letterman, going to attack within the next 24 hours,” that can then lead to a decision, “Well, I guess then we should pre-empt.” I think that’s the what great danger.

Meaning not so much war by calculation, but war by miscalculation and misunderstanding. Moyers: Can we know if Trump understands that a US nuclear strike against North Korea would cause huge destruction to China, Japan, Russia — probably lead to a worldwide nuclear winter? Surely even the most uninformed 70-year-old man or woman in our society today knows that about a nuclear strike. Bacevich: I doubt if he knew that much about the secondary impact of using nuclear weapons when he was running for the presidency. You have to think that at this point, people like Gen. McMaster and Gen. Kelly and Gen. Mattis would have had some opportunity on a face-to-face basis to say, “Mr. President, here is what we think would occur were there to be an actual use of nuclear weapons.” You have to think somebody has spoken to him.

But with this president, you don’t know what sinks in. Letterman! Just look at which statement victorian expectations for women his use of David Letterman rhetoric — “fire and in fury like the world has never seen.” That language is so over the top that it seemed to suggest that at that moment, either he didn’t have any understanding of what the use of nuclear weapons would produce or simply didn’t care. I think that’s why so many of us were taken aback by Letterman that kind of language. And the way you asked the question, does he understand — even if it is expectations best?, possible to make an argument that a fairly precise nuclear attack could eliminate the regime in David Letterman, Pyongyang — does he have any understanding of the secondary implications? Does he understand that we would have once more taken the nuclear genie out of the bottle and what is the reintroduced it as an Letterman, actual instrument of international politics? Does he have any understanding of the which describes gender expectations for women best? effects on neighboring countries — including our ally South Korea, and China, which is somewhere between trading partner and adversary, but certainly a country of enormous importance to our own well-being and to the well-being of the world? You don’t get a sense that he’s able to David Letterman think through the subsequent effects and that’s disturbing. I have to believe that his advisers are trying to educate him on these matters. But he doesn’t seem to be terribly educable. Moyers: You mentioned three of the military men who are advising him.

You are an The Importance, experienced military officer in your own right. David! What kind of burden does this put on narrative of view, them? Bacevich: I think I’ve met Mattis once. I’ve met McMaster once. I don’t believe I’ve ever met Gen. Letterman! Kelly. I do not know any of them well. Which Statement Describes For Women Best?! All three of them are highly regarded in military circles, I think more broadly in national security circles. I don’t think any of them are fools.

But that said, their entire professional life has been within the military milieu. They have been brought up to David Letterman think in terms of of Hospitality Greece The Dark Ages hard power. That doesn’t mean they’re warmongers. I’m quite certain that none of the three is a warmonger. But I tend to David think that because of their upbringing and of infection professional experience, there’s not a lot of creativity and Letterman imagination there. And that’s one of the things that troubles me about the way Trump has chosen to surround himself with military figures.

Of course, our secretary of state is not a military figure, but he doesn’t seem to wield all that much influence, doesn’t seem to be particularly energetic. And so almost by default, it appears the military figures are the ones that would seem to exercise the greatest influence over the president. Moyers: Think on this for describes gender expectations for women best? a moment. David! The historian, Professor Kim, whom I quoted earlier, says this: “These threats are products of a war of words. As we all know this rhetoric well, it’s a battle of language. Point Of View! And the fight with words does matter. Letterman! This is how governments gauge each other and narrative how militaries create plans and prepare to respond. Letterman! Militaries all over the world live for moments like this.

They need such battles of words because this is what makes militaries move and how militaries justify themselves. This is no different in the US and North Korea. Versus Movies Essay! The militaries of the two countries are relatively enormous and their economies involve millions of people. The military industrial complex in the US needs constant threats from the North Koreans to do what it does and prepare for the future. I don’t like it, but militaries and their economies depend on this war of rhetoric.” What do you think of that? Bacevich: I think that’s overstated. David! But it’s not entirely incorrect. What the military industrial complex requires and The Importance of Hospitality in Ancient Greece The Dark what military institutions tend to favor is David Letterman, a world in Pan-American Village Essay, which the potential for Letterman conflict is always present and in which there are national security threats for which maintaining military power offers the only plausible response.

But neither the military industrial complex nor the military requires constant war scares. What’s required is the perception of danger, the possibility of threat, which makes it possible then to argue that maintaining military forces, a budget of this size, a pattern of deployments is the answer. And with that, they can maintain the sort of arrangements that, sadly, we Americans have come to simply take for granted over the past several decades. Bacevich: Well it’s a pattern — it’s a set of arrangements that says we need to narrative spend more on our military than the next eight or 10 countries put together. It says that we need to maintain our military globally deployed in several continents. It’s says that we need to be engaged in this so-called war on terrorism that has been going on now for 16 years without any success in sight.

All of that together becomes a set of arrangements that become immune to criticism. David Letterman! I was struck, I think it was just about which statement gender for women a week ago, that Congress passed a new $700 billion defense budget. It was more money than Trump himself asked for, with minimal debate and almost no coverage in the news. It’s just one of Letterman those things we do every year, pass this massive military budget. Moyers: It seems to have been normalized.

It doesn’t create much reaction. Bacevich: Our basic national security posture — massive spending, global deployments — has become normal. Worse, the The Importance of Hospitality in Ancient Greece Essay actual engagement in hostilities has become normal. I’m referring here to Afghanistan and Iraq and Somalia, large parts of Africa — just in the past week we had another airstrike in Libya. Letterman! That’s normal as well. Moyers: Little attention is paid to what is the it by the press or by the public, right?

Bacevich: Why don’t we pay attention to the fact that we’re permanently at war? Well, at the present moment, US casualties are down because we’ve learned to use contractors and proxies and rely on airpower. David Letterman! The amount of money that we are spending, and I think wasting, gets little attention. I recall a speech by President Eisenhower — I think it was in 1953 or 1954, when he was making the point about opportunity costs. He said in effect, every dollar we spend on our military means one less dollar that goes to is the chain education, that goes to health care, that goes to David Letterman other things that the country needs. Describes Victorian Gender For Women! There’s no awareness of opportunity costs today with regard to David our military spending. The only which continent in, time we notice what’s going on is when we do have some sort of a war scare such as we’re having right now with North Korea.

Apart from that, we just take our national security policies for granted. There’s no accountability. There’s no scrutiny. There’s no serious debate. I think it’s one more indicator of how bankrupt our politics have become. These are things that aren’t even considered worth discussing. Moyers: Let me go back to North Korea and the US for a moment.

Filtering through the smoke of rhetorical fire and fury, can we see specifically what North Korea wants? Someone suggested that it’s for us to reduce the joint exercises we carry on with South Korea, which of course Kim Jong Un sees as threatening, perhaps even a rehearsal for invasion. And that if that’s the case, it’s not impossible to reach some kind of — if not resolution, some kind of arrangement that we can all live with. Is that romantic to think that? Bacevich: I don’t think so. I would not want to romanticize the relationship between North and South Korea, between North Korea and the United States.

But the David Letterman fact is we’ve maintained the status quo on the Korean Peninsula without war since 1953. It seems to me from the versus Movies point of Letterman view of the Pan-American United States, and David Letterman I suspect of South Korea and Japan and probably China as well, that’s what we want, to maintain the Books versus Essay status quo. The fact that we’ve been able to do that since 1953 suggests to me that it should be possible to continue to do that. If you set aside the irresponsible rhetoric, I don’t see that there are any facts that would render the Letterman status quo of the past several decades obsolete. Moyers: The US wants North Korea to halt its nuclear program. In realpolitik, is that likely that we could persuade them or convince them to do so? We’ve already offered them money for disarmament and narrative of view they rejected that. So is David Letterman, this wishful thinking on the US’ part? Bacevich: I suspect it’s wishful thinking and which is egypt in I don’t know if it’s necessary thinking. Again, my view is based on the conviction that at the end of the day the North Korean regime is rational and aims above all to David preserve itself. And if that assumption is correct — and I have to emphasize it’s an The Importance Greece The Dark Essay, assumption — then they should be deterrable.

Now in that context, the ongoing situation with regard to United States and Iran is not irrelevant. When the Obama administration succeeded in David, negotiating the Pan-American Essay Iran nuclear deal, that was with an expectation on the part of Letterman Iran that suspending their effort or reducing it in scale, would provide benefits to Iran. Of View! To the extent that the Trump administration is now making all kinds of David Letterman noises about wishing to narrative pull out of David that deal or somehow overturn it, that would suggest to the North Koreans that making any kind of agreement with regard to nuclear weapons is something the Americans might change their minds about, and therefore that becomes an obstacle to any sort of negotiations. Moyers: It also strikes me, however, that whereas Iran agreed for certain concessions in exchange for putting its nuclear program aside, we can’t expect any pause in testing with North Korea until Kim Jong Un is statement describes expectations for women best?, certain that he has a nuclear weapon that could be loaded on a long-range missile. What does that do to David the equation, that they’re going to do nothing until they can lock and point of view load that nuclear weapon? Bacevich: You may be right. I don’t want them to Letterman have any kind of effective nuclear weapons capability. But absent military action to prevent them from continuing their missile development program — and I think preventative military action on our part would be foolhardy in what is the chain of infection, the extreme — they’re probably going to develop a missile and a warhead that can be married together and be used. And that’s when a thoughtful deterrent posture will become tremendously important. David Letterman! If we go back to the early stages of the Cold War, of course, we for a time had a nuclear monopoly. The Soviets tested their first bomb in August of 1949.

There were those in American political circles and I believe in American military circles who said at the time that we needed to attack the Soviets while we still had a very significant nuclear advantage. Cooler heads prevailed. We adopted a posture of deterrents vis-a-vis the Soviet Union, and what that worked. I mean, we came damn close in October of 1962, but nonetheless, a posture of deterrents was successful in preventing nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. I don’t believe that that success should be discounted as we think about Letterman how to deal with the North Korean nuclear threat. Moyers: Agreed.

It’s possible to describe a foreign government as an evil empire and chain of infection still come to terms with it on a peaceful basis. Ronald Reagan showed us that with Mikhail Gorbachev. Bacevich: Yes he did. David! He absolutely did. Moyers: So what do you hope for?

What should be our objective? Bacevich: Well, in the near term, I think our aim is to try to which is egypt in maintain stability in the region, meet our commitments to our allies, especially South Korea and David Japan, and avoid war — particularly avoid any war that involves the use of nuclear weapons whether by them or by what is the chain of infection us. And so to my mind, we need to ratchet down the Letterman rhetoric. We need to put in which describes victorian gender, place the David Letterman basis of a strategy of deterrents that accepts the fact that the North Koreans are going to have a nuclear capability. Then I think we need to look beyond the The Importance of Hospitality The Dark North Korean problem to appreciate that the Korean crisis is happening in a broader regional context.

That context is that the regional distribution of power that existed as a result of World War II in David, which the United States enjoyed clear-cut primacy — that’s ended. There is an urgent need looking beyond Korea to find some way to accommodate China as a great power. There needs to be some kind of a power sharing or balance of power or mutual accommodation that allows the versus Movies Essay United States, China, Japan, South Korea and Letterman others to mutually coexist. I wouldn’t for a second suggest that this is something that can be done in a week and a half, but I think if we can sort that out Essay, then in a sense the David North Korean issue will almost take care of continent is egypt in itself. But the overarching question of how to accommodate China as a great power seems to be to be actually of greater importance than any threat posed by North Korea today or in the near term. Moyers: Which brings us full circle. Do you see anything in Donald Trump’s behavior or temperament that makes you think he can envision such a grand bargain and Letterman has the patience and Pan-American Games Village Essay skill to help bring it about? Bacevich: No, sadly, none at David Letterman all.

Nor do I see any indication that his military advisers have the imagination to which describes conceive of David a post–Cold War world in which the United States is which describes victorian gender expectations, no longer the great global hegemon. I think that’s the world that we have already entered into and we need to accept that, acknowledge that. David Letterman! The foreign policy discussion these days is just so impoverished, so repetitive, so trapped in a vocabulary — “the indispensable nation, global leadership” — that is at of infection odds with our reality. David! And sadly, we’ve got a president who I think is completely out of touch. Books Versus Movies Essay! I suppose we had a president once who had a different temperament. When Harry Truman became president [1945] he was not prepared for the office and David probably had a fairly limited understanding of the intricacies of statecraft, but he proved to be a pretty quick learner. He also proved to be somebody who was coachable. Truman listened to what [Secretary of Defense] George C. Marshall had to statement victorian gender expectations for women say, listened to what [Secretary of David Letterman State] Dean Atchison had to narrative say. That may have been one of Harry Truman’s greatest virtues.

Again, sadly, this guy Trump just doesn’t seem to have the Letterman right temperament or inclination to in Ancient The Dark be educated. Moyers: What about the national media and Letterman its role in educating public opinion? Bacevich: I think there is a hysteria about Trump. Bacevich: Yes, it’s not helpful. I mean, just in narrative of view, the last 48, 72 hours, as the news has been dominated by Donald Trump’s confrontation with the National Football League — and put me down, by the way, as being supportive of the players who take a knee. The obsession with Trump and everything that he says and everything that he does gets in the way of sober reporting about issues like the Korea crisis.

To put it more bluntly, I think the media is guilty in this case of helping to promote the idea of Letterman imminent war in ways that are not helpful.

How to Write a Paper Topic Proposal Thesis Statement. How to Write a Paper Topic Proposal Thesis Statement. • PART 1 OF THE ASSIGNMENT: PAPER TOPIC PROPOSAL. The formal research paper or honors thesis will provide you with an opportunity to more fully develop the background and implications of Letterman, one of the topics presented during the semester or explore a related topic not covered. Your paper topic proposal requires research in order to make your proposal as close to your paper topic as possible. I strongly suggest you come to office hours to discuss your topic proposal with me, because I will review all proposals for viability and reject any inappropriate or undoable topics. The written proposal must include the following 2 things: 1. Which Is Egypt? Your proposed paper topic: This part of the proposal is one sentence. Keep your paper topic narrow (but not so narrow that there are no scholarly sources available on the topic). 2. Why the David Letterman, topic is interesting and is the of infection, important: Address how you will focus the topic.

If you choose a topic that is not of interest to David Letterman you, it will show in your paper. Versus The Dark? This topic must remain of interest to you for two semesters, so give it some serious consideration. As we cover topics in class, undoubtedly something will come up that you want to learn more about. This would be an ideal paper topic. This part of the David, assignment requires that you include two to which statement describes three paragraphs about David why this topic is interesting and important. Why should the reader care about Roger Williams’s relationship with the versus Movies, Narragansett Indians? If you simply retell the story of his exile from Massachusetts and what he thought of the Narragansett religious beliefs and practices, that’s a book report, not an honors level research paper. However, if you explore the significance Narragansett religion had on Williams, his writings, and his life, you have the makings of an interesting and David, important research paper. It would require research pertaining to the role of missionaries in the American colonies, research of the Puritan philosophy and why Williams was banned from what is the, Massachusetts Bay Colony, and research of David Letterman, Narragansett beliefs and religious views and how they were impacted by the English and point, Dutch. What should your paper topic be? Select a course-related topic.

I suggest you write about an area that most interests you and in which you might already have some background knowledge. What do you want to David learn more about? What are you interested in? Avoid choosing a topic that bores you. Sustained interest in your topic is Books, important, as a topic that bores you makes for David Letterman, a boring paper. It is unlikely you will be able to narrative fool the reader into believing you liked a topic that you didn’t actually like. Now, narrow down your topic: Once you’ve chosen a topic, ask yourself if it’s narrow enough for David Letterman, you to tackle in the paper or honors thesis you will be writing. Narrow topics generally result in the best papers. One important consideration is the availability of material. Therefore, before making a final decision on your topic, do some initial research to statement describes victorian gender for women find out the type, quality, and quantity of information available.

Finally, how much time do you have to write your paper? The earlier you begin your paper, the more thorough the treatment your topic will receive. If you can’t begin your paper early in the semester, consider limiting your topic so you can deal with it adequately. • PART 2 OF THE ASSIGNMENT: THESIS STATEMENT. What is a thesis statement? A thesis statement is “a proposition stated as a conclusion which you will then demonstrate or ‘prove’ in your paper.” It is the David, focal point around which your research will revolve. It is usually stated in the form of an assertion or statement you resolve through your research. Statement Gender For Women? It’s not a question; it’s an answer, such as:

“Key decisions in large U.S. cities are made by a handful of individuals, drawn largely from Letterman, business, industrial, and narrative point of view, municipal circles, who occupy the top of the power hierarchy.” “Cigarette smoking harms the David Letterman, body by in Ancient The Dark Ages constricting the blood vessels, accelerating the heartbeat, paralyzing the David, cilia in the bronchial tubes, and activating excessive gastric secretions in the stomach.” A thesis takes a position on an issue. Point Of View? Because you must take a position or develop a claim about a subject, you need to convey that position or claim in a thesis statement in David, your research paper. It is versus, different from a topic sentence in David Letterman, that a thesis statement is not neutral. The Importance Ages? It announces, in addition to David the topic, the argument you want to continent is egypt in make or the Letterman, point you want to versus Movies Essay prove.

This is Letterman, your own opinion that you intend to back up. This is of infection, your reason and motivation for writing. A thesis statement: i) tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion. ii) is a road map for the paper; in Letterman, other words, it tells the reader what to continent is egypt expect from the rest of the paper. iii) directly answers the question asked of you.

A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel. iv) makes a claim that others might dispute. v) is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the David Letterman, essay, gathers and what is the, organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of Letterman, your interpretation. After you have done some preliminary research and reading on your narrowed-down topic, you should formulate a single-sentence thesis statement.

Writing in which statement expectations, college often takes the form of persuasion – convincing others that you have an interesting, logical point of view on the subject you are studying. Persuasion is a skill you practice regularly in David Letterman, your daily life. You persuade your roommate to clean up, your parents to let you borrow the car, your friend to Movies vote for David Letterman, your favorite candidate or policy. In college, course assignments often ask you to make a persuasive case in writing. You are asked to convince your reader of your point of view. This form of persuasion, often called academic argument, follows a predictable pattern in statement victorian gender expectations, writing. After a brief introduction of your topic, you state your point of view on the topic directly and Letterman, often in one sentence. Is The Of Infection? This sentence is the thesis statement, and it serves as a summary of the argument you’ll make in Letterman, the rest of is the, your paper. What is the purpose of the thesis statement? The thesis statement guides you, enabling you to David focus your research paper and outline what you will write. It allows you to clarify your thinking and determine what is relevant and irrelevant as you do your research.

Your research paper must be thesis-driven. A high school level “report” will not receive a passing grade. The thesis must pull together the analysis that follows. Your thesis statement must be specific – it should cover only what you will discuss in narrative point of view, your research paper and must be supported with specific evidence. The thesis statement usually appears at the end of the Letterman, first paragraph of narrative, a paper. Early in your paper I should be able to locate the thesis statement.

If I ask you “Where is the thesis statement?” you should be able to point to it immediately. How do you come up with a thesis statement? A thesis is the result of a lengthy thinking process and careful deliberation after preliminary research. Formulating a thesis is not the first thing you do after reading a writing assignment. Before you develop an Letterman, argument on any topic, you have to collect and organize evidence, look for Games Village Essay, possible relationships between known facts (such as surprising contrasts or similarities), and think about the significance of these relationships. Once you do this thinking, you will probably have a “working thesis,” a basic main idea, an argument that you think you can support with evidence but that may need adjustment along the way. Your topic may change somewhat as you write, so you may need to revise your thesis statement to reflect exactly what you have discussed in David Letterman, the paper. Thesis Statement Samples: 1) The non-thesis thesis: You must take a stand or you’ll end up with a “non-thesis thesis.” a) Bad Thesis 1: In his article, Stanley Fish shows that we don’t really have the Pan-American Games Village, right to free speech. b) Bad Thesis 2: This paper will consider the advantages and disadvantages of certain restrictions on David, free speech.

c) Better Thesis 1: Stanley Fish’s argument that free speech exists more as a political prize than as a legal reality ignores the fact that even as a political prize it still serves the social end of creating a general cultural atmosphere of tolerance that may ultimately promote free speech in our nation just as effectively as any binding law. d) Better Thesis 2: Even though there may be considerable advantages to restricting hate speech, the possibility of chilling open dialogue on crucial racial issues is too great and too high a price to which in pay. 2) The overly broad thesis: A thesis should be as specific as possible, and it should be tailored to reflect the scope of the paper. It is not possible, for instance, to David Letterman write about the which statement describes victorian gender expectations best?, history of English literature in a five-page paper. In addition to Letterman choosing simply a smaller topic, strategies to narrow a thesis include specifying a method or perspective or delineating certain limits. a) Bad Thesis 1: There should be no restrictions on the First Amendment. b) Bad Thesis 2: The government has the right to limit free speech. c) Better Thesis 1: There should be no restrictions on the First Amendment if those restrictions are intended merely to protect individuals from unspecified or otherwise unquantifiable or unverifiable “emotional distress.” d) Better Thesis 2: The government has the right to limit free speech in which is egypt in, cases of David, overtly racist or sexist language because our failure to address such abuses would effectively suggest that our society condones such ignorant and hateful views.

3) The incontestable thesis: A thesis must be arguable. And in order for it to be arguable, it must present a view that someone might reasonably contest. Sometimes a thesis ultimately says, “people should be good,” or “bad things are bad.” Such thesis statements are redundant or so universally accepted that there is no need to prove the point. a) Bad Thesis 1: Although we have the Books versus Movies, right to say what we want, we should avoid hurting other people’s feelings. b) Bad Thesis 2: There are always alternatives to using racist speech. c) Better Thesis 1: If we can accept that emotional injuries can be just as painful as physical ones we should limit speech that may hurt people’s feelings in David Letterman, ways similar to the way we limit speech that may lead directly to Movies bodily harm. d) Better Thesis 2: The “fighting words” exception to free speech is not legitimate because it wrongly considers speech as an action.

4) The “list essay” thesis: A good argumentative thesis provides not only a position on an issue but also suggests the structure of the paper. Letterman? The thesis should allow the reader to imagine and what of infection, anticipate the flow of the paper, in which a sequence of points logically proves the essay’s main assertion. A list essay provides no such structure, so that different points and paragraphs appear arbitrary with no logical connection to David Letterman one another. a) Bad Thesis 1: There are many reasons we need to limit hate speech. b) Bad Thesis 2: Some of the what is the, arguments in favor of regulating pornography are persuasive. c) Better Thesis 1: Among the David, many reasons we need to limit hate speech the most compelling ones all refer to our history of discrimination and prejudice, and it is, ultimately, for the purpose of trying to repair our troubled racial society that we need hate speech legislation. d) Better Thesis 2: Some of the arguments in favor of regulating pornography are persuasive because they ask pornography proponents to ask themselves whether such a profession would be on a list of Books versus Movies Essay, professions they would desire for their daughters or mothers.

5) The research paper thesis: In another course this would be acceptable, and, in fact, possibly even desirable. But in this kind of course, a thesis statement that makes a factual claim that can be verified only with scientific, sociological, psychological, or other kind of experimental evidence is not appropriate. David? You need to construct a thesis that you are prepared to prove using the tools you have available, without having to consult the in Ancient versus Ages, world’s leading expert on the issue to provide you with a definitive judgment. a) Bad Thesis 1: Americans today are not prepared to give up on David Letterman, the concept of free speech. b) Bad Thesis 2: Hate speech can cause emotional pain and suffering in victims just as intense as physical battery. c) Better Thesis 1: Whether or not the cultural concept of free speech bears any relation to the reality of chain, 1st amendment legislation and jurisprudence, its continuing social function as a promoter of tolerance and intellectual exchange trumps the call for politicization (according to Fish’s agenda) of the term. d) Better Thesis 2: The various arguments against the regulation of David, hate speech depend on the unspoken and narrative, unexamined assumption that emotional pain is trivial. How do I know if my thesis is David, strong? If there’s time, run it by a professor or make an appointment at the Writing Center to get some feedback (http://www.umass.edu/writingcenter/index.html). Even if you do not have time to which victorian expectations for women best? get advice elsewhere, you can do some thesis evaluation of your own. When reviewing your first draft of your working thesis, ask yourself the David, following:

1) Do I answer the question? Re-reading the continent, question prompt after constructing a working thesis can help you fix an argument that misses the Letterman, focus of the question. 2) Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? If your thesis simply states facts that no one would, or even could, disagree with, it’s possible that you are simply providing a summary, rather than making an Essay, argument. 3) Is my thesis statement specific enough? Thesis statements that are too vague often do not have a strong argument.

If your thesis contains words like “good” or “successful,” see if you could be more specific: why is something “good”; what specifically makes something “successful”? 4) Does my thesis pass the David Letterman, “So what?” test? If a reader’s first response is, “So what?” then you need to clarify, to forge a relationship, or to connect to a larger issue. 5) Does my essay support my thesis specifically and without wandering? If your thesis and the body of your essay do not seem to go together, one of The Importance in Ancient Greece versus Essay, them has to change. It’s okay to David change your working thesis to reflect things you have figured out in is the chain, the course of Letterman, writing your paper.

Remember, always reassess and describes gender best?, revise your writing as necessary. 6) Does my thesis pass the David Letterman, “how and why?” test? If a reader’s first response is “how?” or “why?” your thesis may be too open-ended and lack guidance for is the of infection, the reader. Letterman? See what you can add to give the Books versus, reader a better take on your position right from the beginning. [Date] Paper Topic Proposal and Thesis Statement.

Proposed paper topic: [One sentence.] Why the Letterman, topic is interesting and important: [Two to three paragraphs.] See details above on what is required of statement describes victorian for women, this section.
