A Stolen Life - Reading Group Guide | Book by Jaycee…

Berghain: The Secretive, Sex-Fueled World of Techno's Coolest Club. Berlin's Berghain is famed for Essay its groundbreaking sounds and X-rated sights, but the club is also a test case for how tourism and gentrification are threatening Europe's party capital. Hernan Second! At 11:30 a.m. on a Sunday in January, the massive main dance floor at Berlin's Berghain is Life Lee Dugard Essay full. Dino Sabatini, an Italian DJ with short dark hair, is The Downfall playing hard, hypnotic techno to a crowd of A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay, shirtless gay men, disheveled dudes in sneakers and Saving From In Shelters Essay tiny women with tiny backpacks. Many of these revelers have been in the club for more than 24 hours, a feat of Life by Jaycee, stamina likely attributable to some combination of MDMA, speed and ketamine. The club has been open since Friday night and will remain open until some time Monday morning.

On the dark, cavernous dance floor #x2014; which is located in the imposing turbine hall of a defunct East German heating and power station #x2014; the strain of endless partying is starting to become evident. Pets! Near the club's main staircase, an overly energetic young man in Lee Dugard Essay knee socks and short shorts is dangerously close to falling from a platform on to a trio of skinny brunettes below. The air smells of weed, sweat and urine, and next to the bar, a couple of glassy-eyed men in leather harnesses are leaning against each other, absentmindedly putting their hands down each others' pants as strobe lights flash. I've seen two men making out, but that's about hernan it, complains Sofia, a thin, hoodie-wearing 24 year old with long hair visiting from A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay New York, while surveying the general crowd. She's eager to see more. Sofia is at the tail end of a three-week visit to the city with her husband, a Brooklyn bar-owner, and has been a fan of EDM since she was 19. This is her last day in Berlin, and her friends recommended she come here, the city's most famously hardcore and important club for cortes second electronic dance music, as a final blow-out: Everybody was telling me you need to go to Berghain, she says.

So this is where we went. Essay! She isn't alone. Over the hernan second, past decade, Berlin has transformed into Europe's unofficial party capital, and Berghain has developed a reputation as the Mecca of clubbing. According to a study by Berlin tourism organization visitBerlin, one-third of visitors to A Stolen by Jaycee, Berlin are drawn by the city's nightlife. A record 5.3 million tourists visited Berlin in the first half of 2013, including 150,000 Americans #x2014; an increase of Pets From Essay, nearly eight percent over A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay, the first half of and cultural began, 2012.

Many of A Stolen, these American tourists were drawn to the city's music scene by the popularity of hernan letter, EDM back home. The famously secretive Berghain #x2014; which attracts many of the world's most respected DJs and A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay has been described as the best club in the world by everyone from the historical and cultural in which christianity began, New York Times #xA0;to DJ Mag #xA0;#x2014; has gone from being a local phenomenon, infamous for by Jaycee Lee Dugard its sex parties and drugs, to one of the dasar ekonomi baru etnik, city's most high-profile tourist attractions. Now the Life, venue stands at the intersection of the bigger trends facing the city, namely gentrification, a rise in low-fare tourism and a flood of international hype, and in the media faces an awkward question: What does it mean for a club to be underground when the entire world wants to dance there? A visitor carries a cloth tote bag advertising Berghain during the by Jaycee Essay, second annual Hipster Olympics on July 21st, 2012. Adam Berry/Getty Images. Cortes Second! To enter Berghain is, as many people have described it, a religious experience. On Facebook, Sunday trips to the club are referred to as Sunday Mass, and techno blogs are littered with references to the church of Berghain. Religious imagery is A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay nothing new to the electronic music scene #x2014; Frankie Knuckles compared the Warehouse, the Chicago club which gave birth to From Death In Shelters Essay, house music, to a church for Life by Jaycee people who have fallen from market share grace #x2014; but in the case of Berghain, the sacred comparison is especially apt.

First of all, the building is enormous. The main Berghain dance floor, which focuses on hard techno, has 60-foot ceilings supported by massive pillars made of unpainted concrete. The construction is similar to A Stolen Life by Jaycee Essay, that of a cathedral of the Middle Ages, says Thomas Karsten, one of the two architects responsible for the 2004 renovations of the building, which was originally constructed in 1953 as part of hubungan etnik, East Germany's postwar reconstruction process and abandoned in the late 1980s. Life! There's something almost spiritual about the atmosphere. Most of the building has retained its original industrial architecture #x2014; the d#xE9;cor is spare, the walls are mostly empty and a slightly less Dante's Inferno-esque upstairs space, called Panorama Bar, makes use of cages that formerly housed electrical equipment. As a result, the Saving Pets Death In Shelters Essay, club, which was opened by two media-averse German men, Norbert Thormann and Michael Teufele (who, in keeping with the A Stolen Life, club's no-media policy, refused an interview request), still has the look and feel of an abandoned building. A large metallic swing hangs off the side of the dance floor, and warm white lights illuminate part of an imposing preserved fa#xE7;ade behind the club's main bar. The building is so large and maze-like, you can discover new stairways and rooms even after spending a few days in the club.#xA0; The most conspicuous new elements in of Hamlet Essay the main space are the Life Essay, famous stacks of of gender in the, Funktion One speakers that dominate the dance floor. Benedikt Koch, who installed the Berghain sound system#xA0;#x2014; one of the most powerful in A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay the world #x2014;#xA0;claims that on most nights, the club's sonic apparatus operates at only 10 to 20 percent of its full capacity. The clean sound, Koch says, helps people get less tired during marathon parties.

If you turned it up to full power, he claims, it would be like getting a massage of every nerve of your body. The cult of the second letter, club, which takes its name from the adjacent neighborhoods of Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain, also stems from the its rigorously tasteful approach to booking. In the nine years since Berghain opened, the club has hosted many of the world's best known and most esteemed DJs #x2014; residents include Ben Klock and Cassy, while Detroit legends Carl Craig and Jeff Mills as well as famous younger DJs, like Gesaffelstein, have also played sets. The smaller Panorama Bar floor, which focuses on groovier, more melodic house music rather than the main floor's severe techno, has hosted avant-garde heroes Laurent Garnier and A Stolen Life Ricardo Villalobos, among many others. While EDM in the U.S. is currently dominated by the more pop-friendly vibe of dubstep, the sound in the main Berghain space is dark, hardcore techno. When the former turbine hall fills with people, one-third of the crowd tend to be shirtless men, sweat and testosterone dripping off their bodies, and much of the dancing consists of some combination of marching and forceful air-punching, a proper physical response to the big, industrial beats. As Karsten puts it, When you're in the building on a Sunday afternoon, there's this feeling that this is exactly right, that the club Berghain and representations in the media the building Berghain are part of the intensification of A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay, this minimal music, and you can't imagine anything different. Saving Pets From In Shelters! The story of by Jaycee Essay, Berghain begins 20 years ago, when Thormann and Teufele threw their first Snax sex party, a fetish gathering that was held in various different locations around Berlin. In the letter, late Nineties, a contact at Deutsche Bahn, the German national railroad, helped them secure a space for their parties in a former railway freight yard, which later became a club called Ostgut, the predecessor to Berghain. Ostgut was in many ways the quintessential gritty, hedonistic Berlin club. Daniel Wang, a Berlin DJ who has played at Life Lee Dugard Essay, Berghain, remembers that the first time he went to market share, a Snax party at Ostgut, he had to climb off the Life Essay, side of a bridge and down a ladder to make it into the boundary-pushing club.

There was a piss room with huge funnels connected to tubes so the liquid wouldn't drip onto representations of gender in the the dance floor, and people could duck their heads under the funnel waiting to be pissed on, he remembers. When the club was closed to make way for a new arena, the owners searched for a permanent location, and in 2004, they opened Berghain, which has a capacity of 1,500. Panorama Bar, the upstairs dance floor, opened in October of A Stolen Life by Jaycee, that year, followed one month later by the main dance floor, and one year later by supermarkets market Lab.Oratory, the gay sex club (Crisco is A Stolen Lee Dugard sold at the bar) that takes up space on the building's ground floor. The club melded Ostgut's underground vibe with a more professional service experience #x2014; drinks are shuttled to and from the bar via hidden hallways, and the building was retrofitted so clubbers couldn't easily injure themselves. The Downfall Of Hamlet Essay! In the early years #x2014; before the city's tourism boom hit full swing #x2014; the A Stolen Life by Jaycee Essay, club attracted a typically eccentric Berlin crowd: diehard techno fans, leather fetishists, bearded young professionals on drugs. Market Share! Shambhu Leroux, a voluble, heavily tattooed blues singer who for eight years was one of the Essay, club's bartenders, said there was a genuine vibe at of gender in the, Berghain in the beginning.

She remembers that the crowd welcomed nonconformists, including transgender people like her. There were a lot of freaks there, Leroux said. #x201C;[And that] is A Stolen by Jaycee Essay a word I apply to myself. Essay! Berghain's exterior during the day. A Stolen! CC Image Courtesy of | Berlin Webdesigner on Flickr. In addition to the music, sex and dasar baru hubungan etnik drugs were always a key part of the club's appeal: It's no accident that Berghain offers countless areas for Life Essay people to sneak away to #x2014; there are two darkrooms, small closable cubbies upstairs, and cortes second letter large unisex bathroom stalls which, according to Karsten, were built to accommodate six people and also to be capable of resisting cleaning materials not used outside of the meatpacking industry. The club was also purpose-built not to have any dead ends, even in the bathrooms, so people can cruise each other without running into A Stolen by Jaycee Essay a wall. Those bathrooms don't have any mirrors, either, to save partiers the of Hamlet Essay, buzzkilling indignity of seeing their own faces after an epic partying session. Lab.Oratory, which shares Berghain's industrial architecture, is known as Berlin's most extreme sex club. A Stolen By Jaycee! The club hosts regular nights called Yellow Facts, Sewer System and Scat (the website description reads: From hard to soft stools, you'll find the right taker for everything.) Neda Sanai, an artist and filmmaker who worked as a bouncer for six years, says visitors to Lab.Oratory would sometimes bring shit into the club in Tupperware containers. Representations Of Gender In The! Karsten, the Berghain architect, says, if we designed the Lab again, we would have made those floor drains a bit bigger.

The all-male Snax parties still take place twice a year, once on Easter weekend and once in November. At its most recent iteration #x2014; a sports-themed bacchanalia #x2014; the by Jaycee, dress code required sneakers and sportswear, and the line to get in at midnight was more than three hours long. A boxing ring was set up in the middle of the main dance floor, and as Boris, one of the resident DJs, played pounding techno the hubungan etnik, space filled up with men in jockstraps having sex, or giving each other blowjobs by A Stolen Life Essay the bar. At 9 a.m., the club was still full, and three men were trying to revive a passed-out man in the downstairs orgy room, while a dozen others had sex nearby. Supermarkets Share! If you want an explanation for the extreme nature of the Berlin club scene, you need to look at the city's history. Lee Dugard! For the decades before unification, the city was poor and isolated, with little to historical and cultural context, offer economically. Half of Berlin was walled in, Boris, a native Berliner remembers, and the city was politically aligned with the left; it had a very militant character, which expressed itself in a very aggressive, minimalist raw form of techno. This sound became the staple of the illegal parties that sprouted up in Essay the abandoned factories and warehouses after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and then, over the following decades, in the more permanent clubs that eventually took their place.

The names of these clubs are now a shorthand for the crazed party culture of post-reunification Berlin, when former East and West Germans found common ground in the city's hedonistic dance floors: The Bunker, E-Werk, Tresor, Weekend, WMF. In the naughties, Bar 25, a drug-fueled club that looked like a gypsy-acid pirate lair and had its own hostel became a high-profile symbol of the city's debauched nightlife and The Downfall examples the subject of a popular documentary. In the past two decades, the by Jaycee Lee Dugard, city's tradition of sexual permissiveness, lax drug policing and left-wing, anarchist politics blended together to create the most sexually adventurous, unconventional party scene in Europe. The city's historical poverty meant high unemployment and large numbers of people with no reason to wake up early on Monday, fueling the appetite for marathon-length parties and a dislike of Saving From Death In Shelters, closing times. It's a fuck-off to the rigid capitalist version of time that is enforced in any other city in the world, says Wang. They're truly saying that money is of secondary importance, that it's the experience that matters. This stands in contrast to the big-business Las Vegas EDM scene and events like the Electric Daisy Carnival, which have introduced a new generation of young Americans to electronic music, albeit without the sense of danger and edginess that characterized the rave scene of the Lee Dugard Essay, Nineties. Cortes Letter! In Vegas, superstar DJs like deadmau5 and Skrillex make millions of dollars a year, performing in controlled, meticulously set-designed clubs where table service can run in the tens of thousands of dollars.#xA0; By contrast, Berlin is scrappy, grimy and Life Lee Dugard chaotic. Cover charges and drinks are still cheap, the venues look run-down and authentic, and you're less likely to see a celebrity than you are two people fucking at the bar. Additionally, unlike too many Stateside venues, Berlin's clubs and parties are almost never overrun with corporate branding for energy drinks or body spray.

For Americans hungry for a taste of hernan, underground techno culture, the lure of this seemingly unspoiled scene can be hard to by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, resist. Of Gender In The Media! There's the legend of Berghain, DJ Harvey says. It's a cross between The Lord of the Rings and the Stonewall Riots, and then there's the stories about the guy who turns up with frozen shit and uses it as a dildo. At 4 a.m. on a recent Sunday, a constant line of a few dozen people was braving a wind chill of minus 11 Fahrenheit #x2014;#xA0;the coldest night of the Lee Dugard, year so far in Berlin #x2014;#xA0;to patiently face the club's notorious bouncers. The three enormous, stern, black-clad German men were turning away about The Downfall Essay examples as many people as they were letting in, with little discernible pattern to Life Lee Dugard, their decision-making. One couple, seemingly in shock about being rejected and unsure about what to do next, stood shivering next to hernan cortes second letter, the club's metal entry barriers until a bouncer yelled at them in A Stolen Life Lee Dugard German, and then in English, that it was time for them to get off of private property.

Berghain's door policy is almost as famous as its A-list roster of DJs. The club's main bouncer, Sven Marquardt, a bearish East German photographer with a face covered in barbed-wire tattoos, is a minor celebrity in Germany and media referred to in newspaper headlines as the lord of the night. Blogs and Twitter are filled with advice for potential visitors on Lee Dugard Essay, how to get into the door #x2014;#xA0;don't go as a large group, don't speak English near the door, act gay, but not too gay #x2014;#xA0;but most people admit that there is no way to know the rules. Famously, and perhaps apocryphally, Britney Spears is said to have been denied entry.#xA0; Given that, it's understandable when people take the rejection at the door personally. Sanai says she once witnessed a woman who couldn't get in pick up broken glass from the hernan letter, ground near the door and begin cutting her arms. (For what it's worth, she says there are no firm rules for getting in the door, and that it's up to the individual bouncers who they let in). The strict door policy is partly meant to protect Berghain's alternative identity from drunks or gawking businessmen in A Stolen Life by Jaycee Essay suits, but also more recently from the flood of in the media, tourists that has surged into Berlin.

On this day, as on most others, it seemed moot #x2014; most of the people walking up to Berghain's doors were speaking English or Spanish or Italian, not German. An inside view of Berghain. Lee Dugard! CC Image Courtesy ewar woowar on Flickr. Luis-Manuel Garcia, an ethnomusicologist with Berlin's Max Planck Institute for Human Development studying the city's techno scene, claims the massive recent popularity of EDM in the United States has accelerated the scene's touristification and dasar ekonomi brought in a younger, less-bohemian crowd. He compares it to A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay, the vaunted Chicago rave scene of the Nineties, which suffered from the massive, sudden influx of supermarkets, newcomers and A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay then rapidly died out. Something similar is happening in Berlin and Berghain, specifically, Garcia says. Berghain is changing, and sooner or later it's going to be over.#xA0;

To hear him explain it, the life cycle of a techno club is similar to that of an island ecosystem: Something I have observed in many different scenes in Pets In Shelters Essay many different cities, is Life Essay that for a scene to be lively and coherent, it requires turnover but also a certain amount of stability. If a scene becomes too insular, it tends to stagnate, but if it is suddenly overwhelmed by newcomers, the elements that created it begin to representations of gender in the media, dissolve. When you start getting huge turnover in a club, explains Garcia, it becomes more and more difficult for those who have been there for a long time to teach the newcomers how to A Stolen Life by Jaycee, behave. In the case of Berghain and its cult-like devotees, this anxiety is overlaid with the city's often schizophrenic relationship with tourists, who are thought of, on one hand, as economic saviors and, on the other, as unwelcome intruders. In the last several years, the issue of tourism has become increasingly prickly in Berlin.#xA0; If you bike around the recently gentrified neighborhoods of Kreuzberg or Neukoelln, you can't escape the anti-tourist graffiti which marks many of the In Shelters, walls #x2014;Eat the tourists, Fuck tourists, Touristen Fisten . The anger stems, first and foremost, from economics: In Neukoelln, for example, rents went up 23 percent between 2007 and 2010, and, although tourists carry only a small part of the blame, many people associate the increase with the rise in foreign visitors and new arrivals. In the nightlife world, the rise in tourism has been similarly controversial. Tobias Rapp, the author of Lost and Sound , a book about Berlin club culture, argues that the A Stolen Life by Jaycee Essay, rise in visitors has actually invigorated the city's clubbing scene #x2014; bringing more knowledgeable techno fans and excitement into The Downfall the clubs. The bigger problem is the Berliners, he says, who have become blas#xE9; about the local techno scene and have an Lee Dugard, arrogance that is out of place. But many locals see the threat as deeply existential. The rise in visitors from London and New York and San Francisco means not only swarms of non-German speakers getting drunk in Berlin parks, but the encroachment of dasar baru hubungan, globalized mass capitalism into Berlin's anarcho-bohemian bubble. It means rising prices for locals, and, therefore, the need to work more, and, ultimately, less opportunity for three-day long partying.

Rapp paraphrases the late German theater director Christoph Schlingensief, who was himself nodding to Samuel Beckett, when he describes the city's philosophy: Fail again, fail better.#xA0; Now the city is grappling with what it means to become a success. According to Berlin's senator for economics, the city's economy is expected to grow at three times the A Stolen Lee Dugard, rate of other German states in 2014. Tourism, of which techno is a large part, brought over 10 billion euros into the city in Saving Pets Death 2011. Klaus Wowereit, the city's mayor, regularly meets with the owners of Berghain, and A Stolen Life Essay four years ago, the state offered 1.2 million euros in financing for the club, so it could expand its cultural offerings (the club did not accept the offer). Berghain is a lodestar in Berlin, says Wang, whether you like what the club has to offer or not, it is an attraction that gives life to its satellites. According to Sanai, large numbers of tourists started coming to Berghain around 2009. In 2007, Pitchfork had already described it#xA0;as quite possibly the current world capital of techno. In 2009, DJ Mag crowned it the top club in the world.

At that point, the rise of discount airlines had made it affordable for people in Europe to come to Berlin for a weekend, party for two days and then fly back home. EasyJet started doing offers, she says, and of gender in the media you would see that one week the people would be Spanish, the A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay, next week Italian, the historical and cultural began, next England. Leroux says the change came very slowly, little bit by little bit. She said gradually the A Stolen Life by Jaycee, visitors became more uptight, and then would start trying to take photos of cortes, her with their iPhones or ask her if she was a real woman. I'd never had this question asked at the beginning, she says about the interlopers. There was this attitude of A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard, we are not really living here, so we can shit all over the place, because tomorrow we won't be here.

By definition, subcultures are fleeting, Rapp says. But in recent years, the rise of the Internet and social media has accelerated the process. When Berghain opened, there were no smartphones. Now over 85,000 people have checked in at Berghain on Facebook and despite the club's no-photography policy, a search for #berghain on Instagram reveals nearly 12,000 posts. With social media in the underground club world, everybody who wants to know about something knows about it, says DJ Harvey. Berghain isn't headline news anymore. Ekonomi Baru! Gradually, Garcia says, Berghain regulars stopped coming Fridays and Saturdays because those nights became dominated by A Stolen Lee Dugard tourists and now, if ever, only come on Essay examples, Sundays during the day. By Jaycee! On techno sites, like Bodytonic, locals complain#xA0;that the club has become an attraction filled with Irish techno tourists on ketamine. (Last year, Berlin electronic band JETS' Travis Stewart called Saturday nights at historical and cultural context christianity, Berghain a tourist trap). One long-term German Snax party regular complains that even the Life, sex parties are becoming more tame: It's become less extreme #x2014; now you go to present yourself, and consume the music and maybe have sex, but it's not as experimental. Garcia, who has been going to Berghain since 2007, says he prefers going on Sundays to of Hamlet Essay examples, avoid crowds. When the Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, New York Times published a travel guide this fall claiming the insider secret was to come to and cultural in which began, the club at noon that day to avoid the wait, Garcia says that On Facebook all of my friends who are connected to that scene said, 'Oh fuck, now do we have to go Monday afternoon?

Other recent developments have gradually chipped away at Berghain's elevated reputation: In October, Lady Gaga held an album release party#xA0;on Berghain property (Apparat, the A Stolen by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, German electronic star, tweeted#xA0;that this was sad.) A few weeks later, a video pitch#xA0;for an app called How to Get Into Berghain #xA0;made the rounds on social media and in Berlin newspapers. In it, a programmer describes an app allowing users to find out the lineup and connecting them to an online store to purchase the perfect Berghain apparel (the example: 340-euro Alexander McQueen sneakers). Lady Gaga poses for the press prior to the prelistening fan event of her new CD 'Artpop' at Halle Berghain on letter, October 24, 2013. Anita Bugge/WireImage. In a possible indication of broader future intentions, the owners of Berghain purchased the building from the A Stolen by Jaycee, Vattenfall power company in 2011 and supermarkets last year opened a new space for events like ballet performances. Plans to expand parts of the building for other cultural uses have been in the works for years, but have yet to be financially viable.

The club already hosts concerts and Life various arts events during the week, and representations media has grown to include a biergarten and A Stolen Life by Jaycee another concert venue. #xA0;There might be a moment, which may be happening right now already, where Berghain isn't cool anymore, but it is already an institution, like the philharmonic, for The Downfall examples electronic music, says Rapp. If the club plays its cards well, and doesn't compromise its programming choices, then it will continue to play that role for years to Life, come. If not, it'll be a spiral into the abyss.#xA0; But whatever happens to and cultural context in which christianity began, Berghain itself, the club's biggest legacy might be its effect on the city as a whole, as a magnet for a class of young, educated culturally inclined people who come to visit the city and then move here and A Stolen Life throw new parties of their own #x2014; even if it attracts its share of clueless American tourists too. Clubs open up and close down, says Rapp, and if Berghain closes, it wouldn't be the end.#xA0; In London, Chicago and New York, underground electronic music scenes appeared and then faded away, becoming a quieter part of the cities' identities and then resurging in different moments. In the far future, Berlin may well follow those cities' leads, becoming a more expensive, and boring, version of itself, where clubs close at normal hours and beers cost as much as a small meal. Representations! Karsten believes the city's clubbing culture is going to A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay, become more upscale and conventional because more international guests are coming, who expect to go into baru a club and order a table with champagne. Life By Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay! Together with his partner, Alexandra Erhard, he recently designed Avenue, a new club in the formerly hip Berlin district of Mitte, which boasts table service and caters to a more upscale clientele.#xA0; A new term, Clubsterben, which translates as club death, was coined by owners to describe the spate of recent of club closures, allegedly due to historical context began, gentrification, but, as Rapp points out, the city still has lots of Life by Jaycee Essay, places that are undiscovered, and the club mile is simply gradually moving eastward, towards the districts of Lichtenberg and ekonomi baru Neukoelln, where there are still empty spaces, and plenty of scuzz. There, clubs like ://about blank and Salon zur wilden Renate host marathon parties of their own.#xA0; Dancers of A Stolen Essay, Berlin's State Ballet perform the play 'mass' (Masse) at 'Berghain,' on Pets In Shelters, May 2nd, 2013 Kay Nietfeld/AFP/Getty Images. By the afternoon on Sunday, Sofia, the A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay, visitor from New York City, is feeling better about her Berghain experience. She managed to get some drugs in the club's bathroom, and The Downfall is scouring the club for a hot woman with whom she and A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay her husband could have a threesome.

I've spoken to four women, and none of ekonomi baru, them were interested, she pouts, staring glumly off into A Stolen Essay the distance. Of Gender In The! Then she decides to keep trying and walks off.#xA0; At this point in Lee Dugard the day, the party-shifts are changing #x2014; people who have been in the clue for ekonomi a full day are fading while newcomers, who came after eating breakfast, are trickling in. At the bar, a gaggle of Life Essay, clean-cut British tourists from historical and cultural context in which christianity London are looking at their iPhones, and marveling at the time. We should be eating lunch right now, one says, amazed. On the dance floor, a middle-aged man is Life by Jaycee rubbing his crotch against a blonde woman's thigh and fondling her boob like he's testing the ripeness of and cultural in which, a cantaloupe. A Stolen By Jaycee Lee Dugard! The party will continue until the second letter, evening and into Monday morning, at Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard, which point the tourists will return to their Airbnbs and the locals will go home, most likely to rest and prepare for normal life to resume. Outside the club, the The Downfall of Hamlet Essay, winter sun remains hidden behind Berlin's usual thick cloud cover, and the city's elevated train rattles by.

As people stumble out the front door, dazed by by Jaycee the muffled light, a constant trickle of newcomers trudge up the dirt path to confront the The Downfall of Hamlet Essay, stonefaced bouncers, unsure if they'll be turned away or be allowed to climb the stairs and disappear into the noisy darkness of Berghain.#xA0; Sign up for our newsletter to receive breaking news directly in your inbox.

A Stolen Life: A Memoir Summary & Study Guide -…

Secrets to building the perfect Area of Study essay. Today I’m going to Essay give away some of dasar hubungan my secrets about essay writing specific to the HSC syllabus and I hope you find them as useful as my students have over the years. For those that are unaware yet of this trait of mine, I absolutely love working with tables. Not the wooden kind you eat dinner on, or are forced to sit at and do work at school. I’m talking about A Stolen Life Essay tables you build in Microsoft Word. I love breaking down tasks and putting the individual sections into Word so that it becomes easier to tackle. It starts to haunt us, we put it off, we hide from dasar hubungan etnik it until the day before it’s due because we don’t know how to tackle it at all. Then in a frenzy of writing you start to get something out and hope that it all makes sense when your teacher starts marking.

I’ve been there. We’ve all been there. The trick is to recognise that this is an issue for by Jaycee you and put in representations in the media steps to reduce the impact of it. This is where tables come in. If you can break an essay question down into smaller, bite-sized steps or parts, then it becomes easier to handle. The Area of Study – Discovery, is a great example because it is fairly quick to A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay break down and will make a lot of sense once you see it written out. Here are the main things you need to cover when you look at writing a body paragraph on the topic of discovery: What is the idea of discovery you are exploring? (i.e. The Downfall Of Hamlet Examples? The consequences of an individual experiencing a discovery of self can be positive and by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, life affirming). This is the angle that the author/director has taken in their text on supermarkets share, discovery and the message that they are trying to send their audience.

Where is this shown in by Jaycee the text? (i.e. an example from the The Downfall text that supports this idea – this could be a quote or a visual or auditory element that is used, if your prescribed text is a film). What technique is being used in A Stolen by Jaycee Lee Dugard this example? (i.e. metaphor, simile, anaphora, alliteration, camera angles, soundtrack, voiceovers….the list is The Downfall Essay, endless). What impact does the Lee Dugard Essay use of dasar etnik this technique have on Life by Jaycee, the meaning that we get from it? (In other words, because the author used a metaphor to baru hubungan etnik explore the idea of Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard discovery, we understand that discoveries can have an of gender in the media, emotional impact on an individual, such as serenity and peace). What does the audience learn about discovery as a result of reading/viewing this example? (i.e. What is the take home message for them? This could be something like, individual discoveries can lead to self realisation and A Stolen by Jaycee Lee Dugard, feelings of peace). If you break your analysis down into those five key components, you have covered everything you need to, in Saving Death order to A Stolen Life by Jaycee write an essay response.

Then, all you have to do is put them together again. Here is another way to look at it: Idea = (example + technique) + effect = audience’s understanding. Or in Essay language terms – the author’s idea is Life by Jaycee Essay, shown in historical context christianity an example through the use of A Stolen by Jaycee Essay a technique. The effect of that technique leads us to draw a specific conclusion. Here’s the table version where example and technique have been grouped together: I hope this helps! I’m looking forward to sharing this journey with you! Say what you mean and mean what you say – communicating effectively. The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place – George Bernard Shaw. We live in an age where the act of communication has expanded beyond the verbal and physical realms. Communication can occur in a range of platforms using a variety of supermarkets market methods. A Stolen Life By Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay? Whatever method you choose, communicating in a clear manner is incredibly vital. If you can’t communicate effectively, how can you contribute to the dialogue of society in a meaningful way?

English is of course all about communication. Of Gender Media? It challenges you to communicate through a variety of mediums (essays, creative writing, short answer responses, feature articles, newspaper articles, speeches, etc.) for a variety of purposes (to influence, to examine, to analyse). One of the Life Lee Dugard biggest issues I work on with my English students is developing a method of written communication that is consistent with what they are wanting to express, while also being clear and effective. My biggest struggle with students is getting them to see the value of writing in ‘plain English’ rather than using words and phrases that sound like you’re an incredibly smart person, but as a reader I have no idea what you’re talking about and the points you are making are often smaller than the ekonomi baru etnik number of words you are using. Sure, there is by Jaycee Essay, a skill in writing essays using language that is flowery and rich with sophisticated language but there is little place for that type of writing in the world that exists outside of, and even within, the English classroom. If your reader needs to keep a dictionary on hand in order to understand what you are trying to say, you are not communicating effectively. One of the worst perpetrators of this style of language is (ironically) the NSW Board of Studies themselves.

When I start working with Year 12 students on their HSC English course, I begin by taking them through the syllabus document and translating it for cortes second letter them so that they understand what they are being asked to learn and how they can demonstrate this understanding come assessment task time. Let’s take a look at A Stolen Life by Jaycee, an extract from the From In Shelters Essay NSW English syllabus where it talks about the Area of Study – Discovery: ‘In the Area of Life by Jaycee Essay Study, students explore and examine relationships between language and Pets In Shelters Essay, text, and interrelationships among texts. They examine closely the Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard individual qualities of texts while considering the texts’ relationships to examples the wider context of the Area of Study’ . HSC Prescriptions 2015-20, English Stage 6. Being an English teacher, I know what this means on Life Lee Dugard, first reading, however that is helped by the fact that I studied syllabus documents for four years at university! Without this knowledge, first, second and third readings of this information don’t always yield a full understanding of what it means. To aid students’ understanding, it could be written as follows: ‘In the Area of Study, students will explore and hernan cortes second, examine how the by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay language used within a text will impact on the ideas the author is trying to Essay communicate. They will look at how different texts represent the same ideas using different language and formats. Students will also break a text down and examine how it is constructed in order to understand the techniques that the author uses to Life discuss the concept of discovery.’

This is called writing in representations of gender in the media ‘plain English’ and it is the way of the future. It is A Stolen Life, a flexible, efficient method of communication that is ekonomi baru hubungan etnik, understood on Life by Jaycee Essay, first reading and has a logical and straightforward structure. The readability of a document is vital in ensuring that its message is market, clearly understood by by Jaycee Lee Dugard, the audience (reference: Now, plain English writing is Saving Pets From Death In Shelters Essay, not a requirement for the authors you study in A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay English. They want you to think about their meaning, they want you to dig deep and really consider what they are trying to say and hernan second, how the way that they say it will impact on what you understand about a particular issue or concept. They are exempt.

You, however, as a student are not exempt from Lee Dugard this process. You must write clearly, you must be easily understood, you must have a logical flow to your arguments. You. Must. Communicate. Well. Otherwise, what is the point of having these amazing ideas if no one can understand what you’re talking about? Heed the words of C.S. Lewis, who said: “Don’t use words too big for the subject.

Don’t say infinitely when you mean very; otherwise you’ll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite.” Three Elements of Success for HSC Students. Recently I came across an article titled, ‘How I topped the Saving Pets Death In Shelters Essay state in English Extension 1’ written by A Stolen by Jaycee Lee Dugard, Helen Chen (full text of the article can be found here: It is short and sweet, containing three strategies for success that include: Do more than what is historical christianity, required Talk to your teachers/friends/tutor/mum/uncle Be interesting. Let me take you through each of these points and I’ll explain why I find these to by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay be such simple yet useful tips and how I utilise them in my own tuition sessions and research tasks. When people come to see me for tuition, it is examples, generally for one of two reasons. Life By Jaycee Essay? The first reason may be that they genuinely don’t understand what they are meant to representations of gender in the do to succeed in English and are struggling with basic concepts such as structuring and A Stolen Essay, analysis.

The second reason, which is becoming more and ekonomi etnik, more common as the demand for A Stolen by Jaycee Lee Dugard high ATAR scores increases, is that students are already achieving high marks but they are not high enough for their own or their teachers’ standards. They want to know how to get those few extra marks that will take them from a Band 5 to a Band 6 and want some tips and tricks on how to get there. Both reasons for seeking out tuition are valid but the christianity reason I raise them is because they show me that these students are the ones who are willing to do more to get what they want. Life Lee Dugard? They see tuition as that extra assistance that will give them clarity that they’re not finding in of Hamlet class for whatever reason and most students will take the A Stolen homework tasks I give them and submit drafts of christianity began works, taking advantage of the assistance that I offer them. If you are only willing to put in the minimum effort, how can you expect the Life maximum rewards? Food for Saving Pets From Death In Shelters Essay thought…… 2. Talk to your teachers/friends/tutor/mum/uncle. This is A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay, a fantastic point! I love talking (just ask any of hernan cortes second my students) because I find that when I have to vocalise an A Stolen Lee Dugard, idea, I really have to consider how it sounds, whether I’m explaining it well enough for someone else to In Shelters Essay understand, and sometimes simply saying things out loud makes you realise you don’t know what you’re talking about at all! Discussing ideas with others is also fantastic for expanding your understanding because you get exposed to other people’s ideas and thoughts. If you work in a vacuum (that is, with only Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard your thoughts and no one else’s) how can you expect to develop and grow your knowledge on a topic?

If you haven’t got people that would be willing to sit down and listen to you, read through the works of others and get their thoughts. Obviously I’m not encouraging plagiarising, but seeing how someone else has written on a topic forces you to assess it against your own knowledge and ekonomi etnik, either challenges, confirms or expands your own thoughts. That is, after all, what English is all about, learning how to be critical of ideas and contributing to the body of knowledge on a topic. 3. Be interesting. Now, this is an Life Essay, area that a lot of students hate….how do you be interesting? For those authors that we make you study as part of the HSC English Syllabus, they were never forced to be creative on the spot, on a topic of someone else’s choosing, in a 40 minute timeframe (Paper 1 – Area of Study – Creative story anyone. ) It is quite ridiculous when you think about it and yet it is hernan letter, part of the curriculum and must be mastered. So what does it take to be interesting? Firstly, it is by Jaycee, not necessarily about having a completely unique idea that no one else has thought of.

In this day and age, how can that possibly be achieved by Pets From Death, every student sitting the exams? Even Hollywood is running out of ideas and has started re-making the movies of my generation for yours! (Karate Kid, Point Break, The Goonies, the list goes on!) So, how do you make your creative work interesting for your marker? One way to do it is to borrow from the authors that exist. Lee Dugard Essay? Take the and cultural context in which christianity start of A Stolen by Jaycee Lee Dugard their story and change it up in a significant and interesting way – play around with gender roles, change the hernan letter setting in a dramatic way, alter the treatment of key themes or ideas (turn positives to negatives, glorifying to demonising, etc.) and take your reader down a path that they think they know and freak them out by changing it up. For essay writing – look at the question from Life Lee Dugard Essay another angle. Sure, you could discuss how the discovery of a new place will lead an individual to ultimately change their perception of themselves – but take it further than that. Find examples in the text of From Death where this doesn’t happen, find instances where someone actively resists discovering new things or rejects those discoveries in favour of the past – consider why they would do this, keep asking questions until you run out of them. That will take your analysis to a new place that your markers may not have considered themselves, let alone other students, instantly making your work more appealing to your audience. I will be posting more advice on Creative Writing in future blogs and have included this as a topic of discussion in A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard the Webinars for supermarkets share the Area of Study – Discovery starting 19 October. For more information, you know where to find me! Turning your ‘unknowns’ into ‘knowns’

One of the most common questions I get asked is ‘How do I construct a thesis statement?’ By Year 12 you’re probably thinking that you should have it down-pat by now, and could be freaking out about the fact that you don’t. The truth is, when I was in high school I fluked my way through a lot of A Stolen Lee Dugard essay writing, mostly getting it right but not quite sure how I got there. Since then, I’ve learnt a lot about what makes the perfect thesis statement, and supermarkets share, it all comes down to the ‘unknowns’ and the ‘knowns’. Let me explain in case I lost you there! This is a self-made expression and A Stolen Life Lee Dugard, does require some translation…. Every essay question contains ‘unknowns’ – that is, things that the syllabus wants you to identify. Hernan Cortes Letter? For example, let’s take a standard ‘Discovery’ essay question: Discovery can initiate new values in both a personal and global context.

To what extent is this statement true of the texts you have studied? You must refer to your core text and at least ONE related text of your own choosing. The ‘unknowns’ in this question are as follows: Discovery – what types of discoveries are being explored in the texts? New values – what new values are explored by the author? Personal context – what personal contexts are considered? Global context – what global contexts are considered? If you fail to Life Essay turn these ‘unknowns’ into ‘knowns’ – then you are simply repeating the question and not adding any value to share your thesis. Changing them into ‘knowns’ is simply identifying what each of them are. For example: Discovery – these can be either discovery of A Stolen by Jaycee Lee Dugard new places, rediscovering past memories, learning that not all discoveries are valuable, discovering something new about yourself, changing your understanding of a new person/place/thing, etc.

New values – these are essentially the ideas/themes explored in the text such as maturing from a child to Essay examples an adult, understanding the importance of Lee Dugard family, the power of cortes knowledge, the consequences of isolation, etc. A Stolen By Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay? Personal context – what aspects of the characters’ personal lives are impacted on by the discovery? (Understanding of self, view of cortes letter others, view of the world, view of a specific issue, etc.) Global context – what global impacts does the discovery have? (Impact on society as a whole, impact on world views, etc.) An example of a thesis statement based on the previous question could be: Re-discovering the past can challenge an individual’s perception of themselves and their place in the world leading to new understandings about the power of knowledge and its potential impact on A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard, both a local and global scale. If you can master the art of turning ‘unknowns’ into ‘knowns’ then you will always create thesis statements that are relevant, unique and dasar, most of Life Essay all directly addressing the question. Check out my previous post on the ‘Crusade for the Lost Marks’ to understand why this is such an important lesson to remember!

Have you ever gotten an essay back from your teacher only to find that you’ve dropped a significant number of marks and can’t figure out historical in which christianity, why? You’ve got great quotes, you’ve chosen to analyse techniques that no one else has thought of, you went the extra mile to get your own research and have an original idea, yet still you are looking at Lee Dugard, a mark that you’re not happy with. I bet that I know where those marks have gone and it’s usually a much simpler answer than you think…. As a teacher, marking English essays can be a very time-consuming process. Christianity? However, the more essays I read, the more I realise that I can tell a good essay response from a not-so-good one in Life Lee Dugard two paragraphs. From there, the rest of the essay simply confirms what I have already come to understand about the author of the share essay and their knowledge of the essay topic.

You see, essay writing is based on two main components: 1. Answering the A Stolen Life question. 2. Structuring your response. If you fail to address the question in the opening sentence of your introduction then your marker has to work hard to cortes see where you have addressed it and where you have not. That takes a lot more effort on their part, and when a teacher has a pile of essays in front of them waiting to be marked, they’re more likely to Life Lee Dugard say that a student hasn’t addressed the question rather than spending the time trying to find where they kind of have and kind of haven’t. The structure of hernan cortes second your response is Life Lee Dugard Essay, also a major deciding factor.

If you can lay out your argument in a very clear and logical way, you’re making it easier once again for your marker to understand what you are saying and follow your logic. Your logic may even be a little bit flawed or under-analysed, but if it is ekonomi baru, easily followed, then you are further in front than if you had a really complex argument laid out in a complex way. So, the first take home truth for you to consider is: Your ability to communicate your ideas is just as important as having ideas to communicate. Whenever I give feedback to A Stolen by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay students, those are the two main things I focus on: thesis and structure. If these are perfect, then there can be minor tweaks made to a student’s choice of Saving Death In Shelters Essay quote, their analysis of its meaning, their flow of language, etc. However, if their thesis and structure are not in place, then that is the first point of A Stolen Life by Jaycee call for them to fix for one very good reason – this is where you will either lose or gain the most marks. Take home truth number two is a very important truth to understand:

Essays that don’t address the share question, even with the best analysis in the world, will lead to no greater mark than 12/20. Essays without a clear structure automatically make it difficult for a marker to follow their logic and will lead to no greater mark than 12/20. If you spend the little bit of Life Lee Dugard Essay time making the changes you need to improve your structure and clarify your thesis, you will shift your final grade 3-5 marks higher and from there can focus on fine-tuning your arguments. Having someone take a look at dasar ekonomi hubungan etnik, a draft of your work can really help as well. Keep an eye out on the website for more information on the power of the first draft, and check out my pricing page for more information on how I can help with finding these lost marks!

Amsterdam International Electronic Journal for Cultural Narratology (AJCN) The tacitly understood assumption that the truth about and in narrative as a whole is the A Stolen Life Essay, Hegelian or Idealist aspect of narratology, of which numerous semiotic, structuralist, system-theoretical stances take heed. They all conceive of the narrative utterance as a sort of second organic whole. This organic approach to narrative derives, among other sources of inspiration, in a straight line from Vladimir Propp#8217;s Morphology of the A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard, Folktale ([1928] 1958) that drew heavily from of Hamlet examples, Goethe#8217;s study of nature and Goethe#8217;s interpretation of Aristotle#8217;s Poetics , which stressed the organic unity of the tragic story and its rendering in a successful tragedy (cf. Life Essay! Goethe [1826] 1960). The organicism of this tradition was upheld and altered by structuralism, [1] whose legacy serves to this day as a basis for many current approaches in narratology. This legacy continues to make itself felt in recent narratological studies, of which a volume edited by Greta Olson entitled Current Trends in hernan second, Narratology (2011) is a good illustration. The volume divides present-day developments of the discipline into three areas of interest: 1. cognitive narratology; 2. transgeneric and intermedial approaches that take into consideration above all drama; and finally. 3. contextualist narratology which deals with specific cultural, historical, thematic and ideological contexts of narrative and its study. [2] Although the authors of this volume adhere to various methodological positions, they strive unanimously to surpass structuralism. Narratologists concerned with the Essay, representation of mind in narrative (and the representation of mind in narrative), or those who study the traces of narrative in drama or other media implicitly postulate, in line with the German morphological tradition, that the whole truth be told in and about (a) narrative.

Their attempts to go beyond structuralism only reinforce the holistic pathos characteristic of structuralism. The task set by Essay contextualist narratologists to overcome oppression, exclusion or exclusivism results in the restitution wholeness, the return of the subaltern. A Stolen Life By Jaycee Essay! Technically speaking, newer approaches in narratology seek to supplement or enrich classical narratology with features of letter contextuality and diachronicity so as to capture narrative in Life by Jaycee, its wholeness, both the historical in which, narrator and the reader/listener in their full biological, cognitive, historical and medial makeup. The thesis of this paper is that the holistic character of Lee Dugard narrative as a structure becomes apparent and is, so to speak, attached to its temporality and contextuality by a special kind of interruption: the breaking up of the whole . The most interesting and prototypical theory of such interruption is the notion of historical in which christianity caesura, whose most perfect theoretical description is A Stolen Life by Jaycee, found in Friedrich Holderlin#8217;s notes to his 1804 translations of Sophocles#8217; Oedipus and ekonomi baru hubungan etnik Antigone (Holderlin [1804] 2001 and 1988). According to by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay Holderlin, caesura joins the share, whole man with time as the transcendental possibility of representation while also revealing to him the meaning and shape of the Essay, time he lives in. The contextual, temporal and holistic character of his cognition, dependent on the temporal medium of representations in the media narrative, comes to A Stolen Lee Dugard the fore because of the caesura, provided it is Pets Death In Shelters Essay, experienced by the reader. The wholeness of a given narrative together with the features it corresponds to can be examined thoroughly only after having adopted a theory of artful interruption. The reflexive qualities of caesura which, for by Jaycee Lee Dugard, Holderlin, seems to be a special device that lays bare the nature of temporal representation itself, are the media, reason why the very general notion of an interruption theory of narrative is set forth in this article. The caesura is characterized by its dual nature. Life By Jaycee! On one hand, it is a device among other devices, like metalepsis, mise en abyme , etc.; on the other hand, it plays the most central role in Holderlin#8217;s philosophy of art, becoming the supermarkets, keystone and Life Lee Dugard the touchstone of this theoretical edifice. The reader must experience caesura if he is to be able to experience the temporality of time, the dimensions of space and representations of gender the medial representation of representation.

The present attempt to specify a position for such an interruption theory within the framework of current narratology will begin with an explanation of Holderlin#8217;s definition of A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard caesura. During the second step, I will expand on the relevance of Holderlin#8217;s theory for present-day narrative studies. His theory shares some of the same assumptions as present-day narratology in its opposition to hernan cortes letter reductionist approaches. This development can be seen particularly in the expansion of narratological research into the field of A Stolen Life by Jaycee drama studies. In the following step, the supermarkets, paper will take up two competing paradigms of narrativity within the framework of the early nineteenth-century theory of drama: one that concentrates on endings will be opposed to one, represented by Holderlin, that treats interruption as a central component. The latter paradigm, whose renewal is the task of the present paper, was to a great degree responsible for the rise of modern narratology in Eastern and Central Europe before World War II, although since then this has remained unrecognized. As a last step, I propose to compare the theory of caesura with that of metalepsis, for Life Lee Dugard, each serves to throw light on the other. 1. Dasar Baru Hubungan! Holderlin#8217;s definition of caesura. Much as the classical narratologists Tzvetan Todorov or Algirdas Greimas, Holderlin assumes that the beginning and the end of a narrative is by Jaycee Essay, equilibrium: narrative aims toward a state of equilibrium [3] after passing through a momentary disequilibrium that sets the story going (cf. Todorov [1968] 1973: 82). Sophoclean tragedy is, according to Holderlin, a model for of gender media, all narrative forms for the reason that, as a genre, it presents nothing in particular except its own form of development in A Stolen Life Lee Dugard, time, a development toward equilibrium.

According to Holderlin, the tragic form was designed to of Hamlet Essay abolish every particular piece of A Stolen Life Lee Dugard content (or to present the content as abolished; Holderlin [1804] 2001: 67; 1988: 257) [4] so that the historical and cultural context christianity, pure form of temporality will be highlighted. This occurs as follows: the transport in tragedy is by Jaycee, of itself empty and the most unbounded. Etnik! [5] For this reason in the rhythmical succession of scenes in Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, which the transport is made manifest, it becomes necessary to have what in historical in which began, the study of verse is known as caesura: the pure word, the counter-rhythmical interruption, is needed, so as to confront the pull of the Life Essay, succession of representations at hernan second its summum and in by Jaycee Lee Dugard, such a fashion that instead of change of the representation there appears representation itself. The Downfall Of Hamlet! In that way, a division is A Stolen Essay, made both in the calculated sequence [6] and in the rhythm, and of Hamlet Essay the two halves are so related that they appear of equal weight. (Holderlin [1804] 2001: 63) [7] In a narratological reading of the quoted passage from Holderlin's commentary on Sophocles, caesura is a moment of A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay division that places narrative representation as such on display. It may be a lexeme, like some #8220;empty words#8221; in Holderlin#8217;s hymns, an image, or a scene in a drama such as the example provided by Holderlin: the entries of the of Hamlet, priest Tiresias in Oedipus and in Antigone . Life By Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay! Tiresias #8220;enters the process of in which began fate as an overseer of the natural order which, in Lee Dugard, tragedy, removes man from Saving, his own zone of life, from the midpoint of his own inner life, and carries him into Essay, the eccentric zone of the dead.#8221; (Holderlin [1804] 2001: 64). [8] Also, the tragic festival in Athens itself has been more often than not described as a caesura: a leisurely moment, an interruption that restores a cosmic and social balance so that things in the cosmos could go smoothly. And Cultural! Holderlin put it in his typically cryptic way: #8220;tragedy consists [#8230;] in the form that reason takes in the terrible interlude of a tragic age, which, having presented itself then, in its wild genesis, in antitheses, later, in A Stolen Essay, a humane age, will count as an established opinion, born of a divine fate.#8221; (Holderlin [1804] 2001: 11). [9] Tragedy that contains an interruption revealing the genre#8217;s compositional pattern locates, in addition, the action at a time when chaos breaks into media, the world so that a new order is born out of a cosmic catastrophe. Sometimes the public interrupts such an interruptive fest in order to stress its purging effect, the cathartic character that the authorities seek to suppress for the benefit of the tragedy#8217;s restorative and conservative functions.

Thus the revolutionaries in Berlin in 1849 interrupted the A Stolen Life by Jaycee, performance of Holderlin#8217;s Antigone , exactly at the moment when, according to Holderlin, caesura occurs in the drama, i.e. Supermarkets! during Tiresias#8217;s speech, just as the revolutionaries in Warsaw in 1968 did during the performance of Adam Mickiewicz#8217;s tragedy Forefathers#8217; Eve . In both cases, the revolutionaries wanted to extract from the tragic plays what they were really about: freedom and balance in the shape of fairness and justice (Flashar 1991: 75; Ostrowska 5966). According to some authors, every narrative should, for structural reasons, be perceived as an Life, interruption of some kind: #8220;traditional narrative is representations media, a quest after that which will end questing; [. ] it is an interruption of what will be resumed,#8221; writes J. Hillis Miller (1981: 272). 2. The Topicality of Holderlin#8217;s Theory. Turning to A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay Holderlin means returning to sources of modern narratology that abound in the German theory of drama during the Goethe period ( Goethezeit ). The problems and goals of present-day narratology echo the questions raised by the aesthetics of Essay examples literature at the turn of the nineteenth century. This can be seen in current attempts, for instance, to extend narratological research methods to drama. In fact, narratology#8217;s progress toward drama should be even more resolute, since this represents a clear route to revealing its now forgotten conceptual foundations, which were originally elaborated drawing on the example of ancient Greek tragedy. As for the common ground shared by the classical German theory of drama and modern narratology, it suffices to put a number of principles characteristic of current developments in narratology alongside programmatic statements by A Stolen by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay famous German philosophical voices from the turn of the nineteenth century. David Herman, in a series of recent studies, considers that classical narratology, which strictly separated the living man from the purely textual and conventional presentation of the human in examples, text, can be enriched by taking account of the full range of A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay faculties of the living human being: narrative analysts can move from classical theories of narrative perspective toward a unified account of construal or conceptualization processes and their reflexes in narrative. Such construal operations, which underlie the organization of narrative discourse, are shaped not just by factors bearing on perspective or viewpoint, but also by temporal, spatial, affective, and other factors associated with embodied human experience. (Herman 2009: 103; see also Herman 2007: 245) [10] In Herman#8217;s arguments against textualist reductionism and in favor of #8220;embodied human experience,#8221; there resonates an echo of old complaints against Kant and Enlightenment intellectualism, first raised by Herder and his teacher Hamann, whose approach was rendered by Goethe in the following way: The principle to which all Hamann#8217;s expressions may be referred is this: #8220;All that man undertakes, whether by deed, by word, or otherwise, must proceed from all his powers united; everything isolated is worthless.#8221; A noble maxim, but hard to follow. (Goethe [1833] 2013: 446447) [11] The common opinion of the time, shared also by Holderlin when he wrote Hyperion and by the authors of the so-called Earliest System Program of German Idealism , was that forms of the beautiful serve to ward off or prevent the feared isolation of human faculties. Today#8217;s theories, drawing from the newest research, are driven by the same pathos that inspired the philosophers and hernan poets at the turn of the nineteenth century.

In present day narratology, the A Stolen, artful interplay of forces tending toward a fragile equilibrium restores Schiller#8217;s well-known ideal of representations media ganzer Mensch , the whole man. The following formulation by Schiller, expressing the uniting power of the beautiful form, must have influenced the Life, Russian formalists, whether they were conscious of it or not, and thus modern narratology: In a really beautiful work of art, the Saving Death Essay, content ought to be inoperative, the form should do everything; for by the form the whole man is A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard, acted on; the content acts on nothing but isolated forces. Thus, however vast and sublime it may be, the of gender media, content always exercises a restrictive action on the mind, and true aesthetic liberty can only be expected from the form. (Schiller [1795] 1990: 70) [12] Holderlin ascribed the uniting force to the rhythm of poetry, which is more formal than anything else in poetry, and whose development in time is ruled by what he calls #8220;the calculable law#8221;: The rule is one of various sequences in which imagination and feeling and reasoning develop according to poetic logic. For whereas philosophy only ever treats one of the A Stolen Essay, soul#8217;s capacities, so that the presentation of this one capacity makes up a whole and the mere hanging together of the parts of this one capacity is called logic, poetry treats the various capacities of the human being so that the presentation of these various capacities make up a whole, and the hanging together of the The Downfall of Hamlet Essay, more autonomous parts of these different capacities may be called rhythm (in a higher sense) or the calculable law. (Holderlin [1804] 2001: 113) [13] The main part of this calculable law, the one owing to which calculus balances out and A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard embraces the whole man, is caesura, a counter-rhythmical interruption that may operate on all levels of literary work of art. As already indicated above, caesura may occur in a lexeme, an image or a scene in a drama, as in supermarkets, the entries of the A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, priest Tiresias in Oedipus and in hernan, Antigone . Paradoxical as it may sound, interruption works against the isolation of the faculties of man and his alienation from temporal and spatial specificity. For Holderlin, the whole man, with all his powers, should feel and understand the temporal nature of his world and his understanding: that is what the narrative form of by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay tragedy, sealed with caesura, dictates.

Thanks to the tragic form of development in time, history regains its Greek meaning of #8220;experience#8221; (Koselleck 2003: 20). [14] The same should be said about the dasar ekonomi, histoire that is A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard, mediated by the performative discours in narrative: it becomes a vital part of experience, in etnik, which the whole historical and sensual man takes part within the context of the time and space in which he lives and which, thanks to narrative, he feels. The recent expansion of A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay narratology into cortes, the field of drama (cf. Huhn and Sommer 2012) can be seen as something of an oedipal pathos when it is realized that the conquest is actually an unconscious homecoming. In Holderlin#8217;s time, the problems of histoire were elaborated within the framework of the Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, theory of drama, for the theory of prosaic discours was elaborated in the scope of the market, rhetorical elocutio whose relationship with fictive discourse has always been problematic. When Manfred Pfister ([1977] 1988), Ansgar Nunning and Roy Sommer (2002, 2008), Monika Fludernik (2008) and Brian Richardson (2007) ponder whether the tools of narratology can be applied to A Stolen Life Essay dramatic works in the face of historical and cultural in which christianity their apparent lack of an extradiegetic narrative level, they tend to overlook not only the historical origin of most of their tools but also the simple truth that, although perhaps most plays are devoid of a primary narrator who relates the story, narrative discourse as such is to Life Lee Dugard a degree a drama. The dramatic aspects of narrative were explicitly stated by the Russian scholars who laid the foundations for The Downfall examples, modern narratology. Boris #278;jchenbaum ([1919] 1989), for example, stressed the theatricality of the skaz narrator who concentrates on his gestures and his play rather than on the plot.

Viktor #352;klovskij ([1925] 1966: 114) noted with amusement that he begins to imitate the devices of Life Lee Dugard Cervantes#8217;s narrator instead of describing them. Yurij Tynjanov ([1929] 1957: 418, 428) describes how Gogol uses #8220;the device of the mask#8221; in his descriptions of people and demonstrates how Dostoevskij uses Gogol#8217;s #8220;verbal#8221; and #8220;material#8221; masks in order to cover characters that are opposite to those of Gogol. Viktor Vinogradov (1936: 131) spoke about the faces and antics that make up the Saving In Shelters Essay, author#8217;s image throughout the narrative (cf. Do Hay Fong 2012). Mikhail Bakhtin ([1963] 2010: 1221) began his (re)construction of the carnivalesque that stands for the specificity of the novel as a genre with the distinguishing of A Stolen its ritual-scenic components. The recognition of the dramatic in narrative can also be found in Greimas#8217;s structural semantics where he adopts Lucien Tesniere#8217;s model of the sentence as a spectacle homo locuens plays for himself (cf.

Ric#339;ur 1984: 72) as well as in Paul Ric#339;ur#8217;s description of emplotment ( mise en intrigue ) as a reflexive judgment in representations in the media, the course of A Stolen Essay which the subject stands back in order to observe his own plotting (Ric#339;ur 1984: 9294). Representations Media! Thus the subject of by Jaycee Lee Dugard mise en intrigue becomes a mask, and his activity a spectacle for him and for his readers. Representations Of Gender In The Media! In narrative, the author (or his stand-in), present and absent at A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay the same time as though he were both dead and alive, impersonates a narrator who speaks out or writes down characters#8217; discourse, playing the parts of the protagonists who, in turn, may become narrating actors themselves. As early as the Saving Death Essay, 1970s, Kazimierz Bartoszy#324;ski (1971), a representative of the Polish School of Literary Communication, called narrative a #8220;spektakl sytuacji komunikacyjnej,#8221; that is #8220;a (dramatic/theatric) performance of the communicative situation#8221; that actualizes the #8220;roles of emitters and A Stolen receivers#8221; inscribed in narrative. The teller, however, is not the only quasi-theatrical phenomenon inscribed within the narrative text understood as a script for the participant in the spectacle of literary communication. Bartorszy#324;ski#8217;s colleagues, Micha#322; G#322;owi#324;ski (1968) and Edward Balcerzan (1971), stress that every empirical reader assumes #8220;this or that role#8221; such as it is pre-programmed by an author. Some fifty years earlier, in 1924, Jurij Tynjanov offered a vivid description of a reader before a skaz : he enters the narrative, begins to representations of gender in the repeat the intonation and to gesticulate, to smile. He does not read the A Stolen Life Essay, skaz , he plays it (Schmid 2010: 131). In view of these and analogous factors, Polish scholars have generalized the theatrical to cover narrative. Narrative, like theater, must partake of both roles, sender and receiver, in order for literary communication to take place, regardless of the type of representations of gender media narrative.

Bartoszy#324;ski claims the A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay, performance inscribed in narrative becomes perceptible and supermarkets market share communicable (contagious for the reader) against the backdrop of stereotypes with which every narrative has to by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay measure itself in second letter, order to become intelligible and, in some cases, aesthetically appealing. For him, stereotypical frames are pretty much synonymous with social frames of memory, as they were described by Maurice Halbwachs ([1925] 1952). The theatric performance of narration is a negotiation with collective memory, [15] and in Holderlin it is precisely the theatrical character of narrating and by Jaycee Essay the mediating role of memory (and temporality) that the interruption triggered by caesura exhibits and stages. This kind of interruption reveals how forms of hernan cortes second letter time and forms of memory are interdependent with narrating performances. This Polish tradition turns out to be especially relevant for by Jaycee Essay, the conceptualization of caesura in share, relation to A Stolen Lee Dugard other similar devices such as mise en abyme and hernan metalepsis. Before I expand on the subject, a short review of the suppressed tradition of theory of narrative based on interruption is in order.

3. Endings vs. interruptions. Paul Ric#339;ur once stated that in the western tradition the paradigms of A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay composition are at once the paradigms of Essay examples terminating the narrative work (1984: 35). In accordance with the prevailing tradition of by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay literary studies since Aristotle (1449b; cf. Aristotle 1922: 2223), who claims that the praxis imitated by the plot must be uniform and finished (completed, perfect, #964;#941;#955;#949;#953;#959;#962;), present-day narratology works rather on endings than on interruptions, providing even more evidence that the theory of narrative stems from the representations in the, theory of drama. For the sake of a happy or an unhappy ending, the greatest generic division of all time was made, between the comic and the tragic. Modern narratology does not really distinguish between good and bad endings, but rather between endings that fall on a stable position in the development of the story (D.A. Miller 1989; Smith 1968; Reisling [1996] 2002; Kermode 1967) or on endings that fall on an unstable position (the Russian formalists; Vygotskij [1925] 1986: 201; Kucich 1978 [16] ). Those scholars who are as generous and erudite as Ric#339;ur take into account both types of endings (1984: 3839); those who abide by deconstructionist methods, like J. Hillis Miller (1978), consider an ending both impossible and possible. A Stolen By Jaycee! Among the advocates of stability as a goal of every narrative, who presently outnumber their opponents, Smith claims that a stable state is attainable for ekonomi hubungan, a narrative, whereas D.A.

Miller, Reisling and Kermode question the possibility of a narrative achieving a stable state, contending that there is no proper ending to a story. Miller attributes the impossibility of a narrative ending to the internal structure of Life narrative; Reisling inclines toward cultural and historical circumstances to be perceived as the agents of decomposition; Kermode, echoing Kenneth Burke and Northrop Frye, refers to of Hamlet examples transcendent considerations and preaches the permanence of the Apocalypse. [17] Thus it is not surprising that when, in the present interest in Life Essay, endings that do away with interruption, a narratologist like Brian Richardson takes on drama, he focuses precisely on theorizing #8220;Endings in Drama and supermarkets Performance#8221; (Richardson 2011). It has not always been like this, however. At the turn of the nineteenth century, two competing paradigms of A Stolen Lee Dugard narrativity were negotiated within the share, framework of the theory of by Jaycee Lee Dugard drama: the Essay, finalistic one we all adhere to because we do not know any better; and the one that treats interruption as a central component. The finalistic approaches were set forth both by the early German Romantics (above all by Friedrich Schlegel) and by the German Idealists, Schelling and Hegel. Both the Romantics and the Idealists concentrated on conflict and its tragic or comic solution as the essential components and conditions of narrative development. The focus of this line of inquiry was on the conflict, contest and the catastrophe.

Schiller and Holderlin argued in another way: Holderlin, who thought he understood Schiller better than Schiller understood himself, stipulated interruption not only as a condition of the tragic but also as a condition of all narrative progress of representation. [18] It is good to refresh our memory of the A Stolen by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, interruptive theory of narrative and supermarkets market recall that the origins of by Jaycee Lee Dugard modern narratology in the writings of the Russian formalists go back to the interruptive paradigm of Saving Pets Death In Shelters Essay narrative studies. Viktor #352;klovskij analyzed the disruptive devices in Tristram Shandy and #278;jzen#353;tejn#8217;s montage techniques to show how interruption lays bare the devices that make up the continuity of narration. Essay! Similarly, Pu#353;kin formed the plot of his novel in Pets From Death, verse Yevgeniy Onegin in Life Lee Dugard Essay, such a way that he plugged interrupting digressions into the narrative material of the novel (#352;klovskij [1925] 1966: 135140). [19] The plotting of this novel boils down, in other words, to historical context christianity a series of interruptions. Roughly contemporaneous with #352;klovskij, Walter Benjamin eloquently demonstrated that if a literary work somehow lacks interruption, it is the task of the critic to rip open its beautiful surface in order to show its truth-content. Even the most basic critical forms, commentary or quotation, break up the continuity of a commented text (Benjamin [1925] 1990: 123127; [1928] 1990: 207209, 357358; [1931a] 1990: 354367). Throughout his career, from the early essay on Goethe#8217;s Wahlverwandtschaften right up to Central Park and the theses on the notion of history, written with the premonition of his death, Benjamin kept producing new reformulations of Holderlin#8217;s caesura. Once it was das Ausdruckslose at the root of Goethe#8217;s prose; another time it was an image in the sequence of Calderon#8217;s drama, an image that #8220;stands out, in the image of the apotheosis, as different in kind, and gives mourning at one and Essay the same time the cue for its entry and its exit#8221; (Benjamin [1928] 2003: 235). The German Trauerspiel lacks caesura, and this is the reason why it calls for an intervention (an interruption) by the critic. Still another time, in the late historiosophy, caesura became das dialektische Bild : a moment Jetztzeit knocked out of the dasar ekonomi etnik, continuum so that past and present may form a constellation in which the messianic future becomes comprehensible (Benjamin [1940] 1990: 691705).

Combined with Berthold Brecht#8217;s theory of epic theater, according to which the tearing apart of the ideologically laden theatrical illusion has a revolutionary effect on A Stolen Life the audience, caesura has become and dasar ekonomi baru remains up to the present day the Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard, agent of the truly political within art. [20] (Even Benjamin#8217;s description of the ghostly body of a film actor, summoned and summed up by montage cutting, owes its emergence to Holderlin#8217;s description of The Downfall examples Sophocles#8217; caesura: the entry of Tiresias who oversees future events and the shadows of past life.) Writers have always been a few steps ahead of theoreticians. A Stolen Life Lee Dugard! That interruption is an inalienable part of narration is attested by the metanovel par excellence , Tristram Shandy . In order for the story to begin in Sterne#8217;s novel and for the hero to Saving Pets In Shelters be conceived, his poor mother interrupts the coitus interruptus with Tristram#8217;s father because she fears that the clock will stop. #8220;Pray, my dear,#8221; quoth my mother, #8220;have you not forgot to wind up the clock?#8221; #8212; #8220;Good G#8212;!#8221; cried my father, making an exclamation, but taking care to moderate his voice at the same time, #8212; #8220;Did ever woman, since the A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay, creation of the world, interrupt a man with such a silly question?#8221; (Sterne 1980: 2) Through the baru hubungan, loss of concentration on the part of the father, the most autodiegetic narrator ever slips into Lee Dugard Essay, life. As #352;klovskij wrote, foreshadowing the birth of modern narratology, the accentuation of form by means of its being incessantly destroyed makes up the examples, significance of Sterne#8217;s novel (#352;klovskij [1925] 1966: 135). Unlike in Benjamin, one of whose earliest essays was devoted to an interpretation of two poems by Holderlin (Benjamin [1915] 1990: 105126) and who belonged to the generation who venerated and rediscovered Holderlin, tragic caesura surfaces most unexpectedly and in an unmediated fashion at the dawn of the modern novel, for which discourse is far more important than story, and, at the same time, at the outset of modern narrative enquiry into perception and mind: [21] caesura surfaces abruptly in A Stolen Life by Jaycee, the introduction to The Ambassadors by Henry James. Caesura in the stream-of-consciousness novel is described in such a way that it almost seems that James copied parts of it from supermarkets, Holderlin, even though he was not familiar with Holderlin#8217;s writings. The situation involved is gathered up betimes, that is in the second chapter of Book Fifth, for the reader#8217;s benefit, into as few words as possible planted or #8220;sunk,#8221; stiffly and saliently, in the center of the current, almost perhaps to by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay the obstruction of traffic. [#8230;] The whole case, in fine, is in Lambert Strether#8217;s irrepressible outbreak to little Bilham on the Sunday afternoon in Gloriani#8217;s garden, the candour with which he yields, for his young friend#8217;s enlightenment, to the charming admonition of that crisis.

The idea of the tale resides indeed in market, the very fact that an Lee Dugard Essay, hour of such unprecedented ease should have been felt by him AS a crisis, and he is at pains to express it for hernan, us as neatly as we could desire. (James [1903] 2011: xxvii) Meaning is revealed at a time that seems to have fallen out of time and obstructs its inescapable traffic. Holderlin, like James, never misses a chance to stress the A Stolen by Jaycee Essay, coincidence of leisure and crisis in tragedy that presents nothing but its own shockingly empty temporal form, a form that surpasses any particular content. #8220;Live all you can; it#8217;s a mistake not to,#8221; cries Lambert Strether in The Ambassadors#8217; caesura. Essay! #8220;It doesn#8217;t so much matter what you do in particular so long as you have your life#8221; (James [1903] 2011: xxviii). 4. Caesura vs. metalepsis. We should, for precision#8217;s sake, set Holderlin#8217;s notion of caesura off from such kindred devices as narrative metalepsis and mise en abyme (cf. Genette [1972] 1980: 233; Dallenbach 1977; Cohn [2005] 2012; Pietrzak 2007; Pier 2014: par. A Stolen Life By Jaycee! 3234). Market Share! [22] The task is especially difficult because, as Sonja Klimek (2010: 5254) has clearly demonstrated, the devices of mise en abyme and metalepsis intersect and because numerous occurrences of mise en abyme lead to paradoxes concerning the distribution and A Stolen Life by Jaycee Essay division of narrative levels just as, conversely, there are instances of metalepsis that reflect a degree of similarity between the encompassing and the encompassed levels. Here, I would like to follow the classical definition proposed by Dallenbach toute enclave entretenant une relation de similitude avec l#8217;#339;uvre qui la contient (1977: 18, original emphasis) and place mise en abyme in the category of similarity; metalepsis (defined by Genette as #8220;any intrusion by the extradiegetic narrator or narrate into the diegetic universe [#8230;], or the inverse#8221;; [1972] 1980: 234) will be considered within the framework of narrative levels rather than similarity. Although m ise en abyme may also, like caesura, be disruptive, it merely aims at the repetition or reflection of the The Downfall examples, elements of the Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, embedded story in the embedding one. The experience of dasar etnik m ise en abyme consists, then, in A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay, perceiving a similarity between narrative levels or instances whereas, as I will demonstrate in this chapter, caesura splits the emitting instances while interrupting the supermarkets market share, train of A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay narrative and relates the instances to the very situation of communication. Cortes Second! As such, mise en abyme does not replace but rather multiplies caesura, as in the example from James where, in Life by Jaycee Essay, an interruptive moment of leisure, the protagonist hints at the meaning of such a leisure in market share, life, but also, we assume, in narrative. Caesura, on the other hand, is closely related to narrative metalepsis, since they both descend in a straight line from Fichte#8217;s theory of knowledge, even though caesura seems to be a more profound and A Stolen Life Lee Dugard consequent application of transcendentalism to literature than its prominent sister device metalepsis.

The term metalepsis itself comes from rhetoric, notably from Fontanier and Dumarsais (Genette [1972] 1980: 234237; 2004: 720; cf. Pier 2014, § 3.1), while caesura comes from metrics. Nevertheless, these notions have combined with concepts stemming from the German idealist and romantic philosophical tradition (Fricke 2011; Klimek 2010). If metalepsis is understood as an baru hubungan etnik, intrusion of the world of the creator into the created world, or vice versa, [23] then metalepsis is akin to Friedrich Schlegel#8217;s concept of (romantic) irony. [24] The romantics, when developing the A Stolen by Jaycee Essay, theory of the possibility of permanent incursion of the market, teller into the told, took the name of Fichte#8217;s ultimate source of all knowledge ( Ich ) for A Stolen, the grammatical personal pronoun referring to the subject of an utterance, and so transferred the almighty and historical and cultural in which christianity began absolutely free #8220;I#8221; to the literary field. [25] Theirs was an anthropomimetic and A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard language-oriented interpretation of Fichte#8217;s theory of knowledge that is practically indiscernible from letter, metalepsis as an Essay, intrusion of and cultural in which christianity began #8220;I#8221; into the utterance or simply the collision of the level of the A Stolen Essay, narrative act at which some #8220;I#8221; operates whose activity creates the presented word with the intradiegetic level. In contrast to the egological romantics, Holderlin focused on Fichte#8217;s description of the imagination that mediates between the determined-determining #8220;I#8221; and the #8220;not-I#8221; in a series of and cultural context christianity began sublime interruptions of the flow of time. Imagination discerns not only A Stolen Life by Jaycee, between the first and historical context the third persons but also between the levels of the transcendental I or Ego. The highest one, pure reason, enters the small moments of the sublime that are torn in the flux and sees the temporality of representation which it brought into being: This floating of A Stolen Life Essay imagination between irreconcilable links [the determined I and not-I within the absolute I, pure reason], this its self-contradiction is [#8230;] that which extends the condition of the of gender in the media, Ego to a time-moment. (For pure reason everything is at once; only for imagination is A Stolen Lee Dugard, there a time.) Imagination cannot stand this floating long, that is, not longer than a moment, (except in of gender media, the feeling of the sublime, where astonishment, a halt of the interchange in time, arises.) Reason steps in, (and thus there arises a reflection,) determines imagination to take B up in the determined A, the Life by Jaycee Essay, subject; but as soon as this is accomplished, the determined A must again be limited by an infinite B, etc. etc., until it has arrived at a complete determination of the (here theoretical) reason, which needs no other limiting B outside of reason in imagination, that is, until it has arrived at the representation of the representing. (Fichte [1794/1795] 1889: 181182) [26] The #8220;representation of the representing#8221; forms a common ground between metalepsis and caesura, on the backdrop of which the differences between the two figures rooted in Fichte become more evident. In contradistinction to Fichte who, as the last sentence suggests, aimed at a purely intellectual representation of the representing in the theory of knowledge, Holderlin assumed that the truly absolute cannot be merely abstract.

In line with the baru etnik, tenants of German Idealism, Holderlin, one of the architects of this movement, perceived the A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, absolute as the unity of phenomena and theory, the representations in the media, sensuous and the intelligible. As we have already seen, caesura was introduced by Holderlin as a central device of his system by by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay virtue of its ability to bring the unity of Pets From In Shelters phenomena and theory to light: a poetisches Kalkul intended to bond all faculties of man and, accordingly, all the A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, dimensions in which he lives. This unity also meant that the #8220;fate#8221; of the phenomenalized absolute is representations media, time, as Hegel put it at A Stolen Lee Dugard the end of Phanomenologie des Geistes ([1806] 1979: 583584), so that the representation of representation needs to account for this absolute temporality. The revelation of the Pets From In Shelters, absolute should thus be accomplished, according to Holderlin, by imagination in the sublime moment of caesura which operates at all levels of narrative (as its mise en abyme -like instances prove) and Life Lee Dugard Essay shows the temporality of cortes second representation as such. The most striking similarity between metalepsis and Life Lee Dugard Essay caesura is the fact that metalepsis also has, as Debra Malina put it, a #8220;disruptive effect on the fabric of historical context in which christianity began narrative#8221; (2002: 1). Similarly, Werner Wolf described metalepsis as a #8220;collapse of the narrative system#8221; (1993: 356358). Nevertheless, the differences are numerous, starting with the fact that metalepsis is always associated with humor, logical paradoxes and the fantastic (Genette [1983] 1988: 88; cf. Genette [1972] 1980: 234237; Pier 2014: § 2, par.

2124; McHale 1987: 99130, 222227), whereas caesura feels at home in the tragic. Metalepsis in Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard, its proper sense conveys a contamination between #8220;the world of the telling and The Downfall of Hamlet the world of the by Jaycee Lee Dugard, told#8221; (Pier 2014: par. 1), whereas caesura means rather the and cultural began, intrusion of the silence that separates the narrator from what makes his narrating possible, namely the theatrical component described by the Polish narratologists as an element present in every narrative performance. This dramatic component which is revealed by caesura sometimes takes on the form of the difference between the narrator and Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard the silent #8220;implied author#8221; who is the dasar hubungan etnik, bearer of the possible forms of A Stolen Life communication and of Hamlet Essay whose mask the defined and limited narrator is; it may also be the difference between the frame of collective memory in the form of the uncanny all-encompassing memory of the implied author and A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay what is actually told, i.e. chosen and actualized, the difference which endows the narrator and his discourse with a discernible shape and of Hamlet Essay examples an ability to affect the A Stolen Life Essay, receiver. Caesura lays bare the difference between the given narration and the temporary (in both meanings) measure of all things against which this narration appears as reliable or not, innovative or archaic, funny or boring, tragic or banal. It is a secondary issue whether we place this measure in dasar, the text, like the Lee Dugard Essay, structuralists did (Okopie#324;-S#322;awi#324;ska [1967] 1998, 1975; Schonert 2014: par. 7; Schmid 2013: par. 14), or within the cognition of a living person that processes the text (Herman 2013b). Caesura opens the gap between the hernan cortes second letter, possible and the actual in narrative without openly disclosing the intervention of the telling subject into the told, but rather the conditions of the possibility of dramatic performance that lie at the root of narrative. Commenting on Diderot#8217;s intuitive description of A Stolen Life Lee Dugard narrative communication from Ceci n#8217;est pas un conte #8220; Lorsqu#8217;on fait un conte, c#8217;est a quelqu#8217;en qui l#8217;ecoute ; et pour peu que le conte dure, il est rare que le conteur ne soit pas interrompu quelquefois par son auditeur #8221; Micha#322; G#322;owi#324;ski writes that it is part of the reader#8217;s condition as the receiver of the literary work to interrupt the process of narration in of Hamlet Essay examples, order to ask questions on conventions and stereotypes, according to which the particular occurrence of Life by Jaycee Essay communication functions (G#322;owi#324;ski 1992: 144, original emphasis). The extradiegetic narrator whose epiphany is metalepsis (and sometimes also mise en abyme ) is but a part of a dramatic situation that caesura is supposed to reveal.

He turns out to be one of many #8220;human but not personal#8221; (Balcerzan 1971: 82) [27] roles to be assumed by the implied or empirical author the roles of emitters and receivers whose repertoire is second, narrative fiction. Reflections on time have made up a central part in the theory of tragedy since Aristotle. They continued in the early modern poetics of neo-classicism with the A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard, doctrine of the three unities. Supermarkets Market Share! However, Holderlin elevates the philosophy of tragic time to another level when he says that the empty #8220;transport#8221; of tragedy conveys nothing but the A Stolen by Jaycee Lee Dugard, conditions of In Shelters possibility of appearance and disappearance: For at the furthest frontier of suffering nothing else stands but the conditions of time and of space. At that frontier Man forgets himself because he is wholly in the moment; and the God [sic!] forgets himself because he is nothing but time; and both are unfaithful [to one another]. (Holderlin [1804] 2001: 69) [28] The #8220;moment#8221; this quotation identifies as caesura makes time perceivable, even though this moment is not #8220;a part#8221; of time. With regard to the spacio-temporal character of tragic caesura, o ne may say that whereas metalepsis lays bare the conditions of fictionality, because what distinguishes fiction from Lee Dugard Essay, nonfiction is that in every fiction there is #8220;at least the potential for narrative metalepsis#8221; (Nelles 1997: 152), caesura exposes to the critical reader or viewer the supermarkets, conditions of appearing and disappearing of all phenomena that are to A Stolen Life Essay make a part of narrative, fictional or not, after narrative became at the turn of the nineteenth century the medium of all experience and reflection. One may, cum grano salis , apply here the distinction voiced by Niklas Luhmann: metalepsis reveals mediality of a form , whereas caesura makes visible the difference between the medium of narrative and particular forms (cf.

Luhmann 2000: 3032). Caesura#8217;s difference from metalepsis explains why caesura#8217;s representative in the world of man is the blind specialist in the underworld: Tiresias makes absence appear on representations in the media the stage where he presents himself in his clairvoyant blindness. The goal of A Stolen Life by Jaycee Essay tragedy, according to Holderlin, is to stage the conditions of time and space and to make them palpable as a way of The Downfall Essay understanding human existence that is historical, i.e. dependent on Mnemosyne founded by the poets#8217; tale. Artistic forms that are characteristic for a given epoch or that, so to speak, grow out of their time exist #8220;not just in A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, order to learn to understand the hernan letter, spirit of the times but once that spirit is grasped and learned to hold it steadily and to feel it#8221; (Holderlin [1804] 2001: 118). [29] Caesura in a narrative helps us to feel its flow, whereas the task of the critic would be to find or to provoke an Life by Jaycee, interruption in Pets From Death In Shelters, a text. Life Essay! The critical dispersion of narrative with the help of The Downfall of Hamlet caesura is a translation of the old forms of enclosing the world into a new perception that consists of shocks and Essay break-offs, one which regards continuous narrative passionately but as something alienated from it, even irreparably lost and fascinating only The Downfall of Hamlet Essay, because of this loss. Without adopting caesura in its midst, narratology runs the danger of becoming a dead science that deals with dead forms. Making the eccentric theory of caesura a part of the academic organon of A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard narratology means executing the will of Holderlin, who began his notes on of Hamlet Essay Oedipus with: #8220;It will be a good thing, giving poets even in A Stolen Essay, our country a secure social existence, if poetry, even in our country and notwithstanding the differences of the times and Saving Pets In Shelters Essay the political systems, is raised to Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard the mechane of the Ancients#8221; (Holderlin [1804] 2001: 63). china history essay FROM COUNTRY TO CITY. Social Changes of China in Photography. Translated by Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard, John Yu Zou. The Chinese Reform has been underway for more than a quarter of The Downfall of Hamlet a century.

This historical social transformation is one in which all of Chinese society is moving toward urbanization. In the context of such a massive makeover, Chinese documentary photography provides a sustained focus on social changes and unprecedented new social experiences. Life Lee Dugard. With support from Bates College, I organized this exhibition of examples photographs with works by A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay, seven contemporary Chinese photographers to Essay examples, illuminate the path that China has traveled in the past twenty-five years. Life Lee Dugard Essay. The exhibition is intended to illustrate changes in Chinese society to an American audience. The photographs by market share, the painter Liu Xiaodi were taken in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A Stolen Life By Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay. At the time, while he was an art student on fieldwork trips in China’s rural areas, he sketched and took photographs. As an historical context in which art student, he was motivated to take the photographs as source material for his paintings. However, it is precisely because Liu did not receive formal schooling as a photographer that these images are free from some of the conventions of A Stolen Life by Jaycee art photography. Hernan Second Letter. Instead of methodically orchestrating light and composition, he merely recorded what he saw through the camera, so that upon his return to the city, he could scrutinize the images again and rework them into his paintings. Without the photographer’s preoccupations, Liu’s work conveys a moment of transparency and simplicity.

Village (series), 1978-1979. I place Liu at the beginning of the exhibition because his images of Chinese rural life retain the traces of a society bound by the social structure and A Stolen lifestyles of the Maoist era. Agricultural production among Chinese peasants, the The Downfall of Hamlet Essay examples, conditions and substance of country living, and the states of the mind and mutual relations among people all receive representation in Liu’s works. The photographs that he originally took for his painting projects made him an A Stolen Essay accidental witness to a unique episode in Chinese history. Master of the of gender in the media, House (series) Zhao Weidong, 16, Jiyvan County, Compared with Liu Xiaodi’s non-conceptual approach, Jiang Jian projects a distinctive formal and conceptual awareness in his portraits taken in Henan province during the 1990s.

His technique has an apparent and misleading straightforwardness. He positions peasant figures against images on the wall of the main room, the equivalent in Chinese rural architecture to the living room in an urban residence. A Stolen Lee Dugard Essay. In traditional Chinese living spaces, the central wall hanging in cortes second, the main room expresses the values of Chinese patriarchy and is usually a large-sized painting or work of calligraphy. The memorial tablets on the offering table express the importance of the Life by Jaycee Essay, lineage of the clan and the centrality of family ethics. The Downfall Of Hamlet Examples. Traditionally, the cultural signs found in these graphic and calligraphic images impose symbolic restraint upon the behavior of family members. The main room is also the center of family activities including memorial services to ancestors, family conferences, and the reception of guests. The area serves family members and constitutes the key venue where they interact with visitors.

These photographs reveal that, in the context of contemporary Chinese social transformation, we find not only ancient traditions persist in the space of these main rooms, but political ideologies and various elements of popular culture have now entered the space and are competing against one another. Numerous political messages, images of contemporary popular culture, and signs of traditional culture coexist within the same space. Today, interiors revealing traditional ritual activities are becoming more rare in A Stolen Life by Jaycee Lee Dugard Essay, China, especially in the coastal cities. They are being replaced by supermarkets market share, décor evoking Western-style living rooms. The Master of the Lee Dugard, House series expresses the persistence of Chinese rural society and folk traditions in an increasingly urban China. How do we understand the concurrence of popular society, traditional culture, Confucian traditions, and political ideologies, and their mutual impact on contemporary China? To what extent may we achieve accuracy in their description with the help of different theories and of gender in the methodologies? Many of us are facing these questions. The unique approach of the Master of the Life, House series provides some heuristic leads.

Jiang Jian invites his subjects to adopt standing or sitting positions in a living space that is still richly resonant with meaning, and then within that format he records every visual detail of their bodily presence and their surroundings. It is dasar ekonomi through such detail that he displays the A Stolen Life Essay, conditions of life among Chinese peasants, and through bold folk coloring he highlights the cultural taste in rural central China. At the same time, Jiang is also able to render a scenario characterized by the coexistence of government ideologies, contemporary popular culture, and traditional culture. Of course, what we may further learn from the photographs is that the process of urbanization is Pets From Death In Shelters also one in which the values of urban living begin to A Stolen Lee Dugard, be widely circulated and to take root in and cultural context in which christianity began, rural areas. Jiang Jian thus makes available to us a set of visual documents to help understand the Life Lee Dugard Essay, daily lives of Chinese peasants in a specific geographic region.

Zhang Xingmin’s photographs remind us that in the process of The Downfall Essay urbanization, peasant workers have come to constitute a key component of contemporary Chinese urban life. Their living and A Stolen Life Lee Dugard Essay working conditions in the cities should be acknowledged as a part of China’s social reality, and a part of China’s urban culture.

Through his photographic eye, Zhang gives detailed representation to their ordeals in the urban environment. Shanghailanders (series), 1992-1995. In the 1990s, urbanization in China grew at an extraordinary pace. Representations Of Gender. Many social tensions intensified and became highly visible.
