The Unholy Pleasure: My life-long recovery from means, snobbery. My life-long recovery from snobbery. My snobbery began in third grade, at Pioneer Valley Montessori School. That was when I ceased writing my name as Mark in the upper-right corners of rawls two principles of justice my papers and instead began writing Mark the Great. I remember precisely why I donned this new epithet: It was because my teacher that year, a young novice named Lisa, hated me.
Lisa practically seethed in my presence. One reason was that I talked back. Not in a rude way, I think, but in an insistent and customer service means articulate way. I had a very wide vocabulary for an 8-year-old boy, I loved argument, and teach a dog to stay I was deeply suspicious of much of the school's Montessori pedagogy. Time lines, for example: Why were we supposed to means learn history by unscrolling a piece of paper, lying on the floor, and using pencils to draw a long line with hash marks representing various dates in, say, American history? I would ask Lisa questions like Wouldn't it make more sense to just read a history book? And Lisa, fresh from weather movie, her Montessori certification, flush with the customer service convert's zeal, hated that kind of impudence. So she would yell at me, or tell me to go away, or—on one memorable occasion—inform me that none of my classmates liked me. In that instance, she proved her point by calling for quiet in the classroom and satan speech then demanding, Anyone who likes Mark Oppenheimer, raise your hand!
When my stunned classmates failed to raise their hands, she looked at me as if to service say, See ? So in this toxic and topsy-turvy environment, where my gifts were liabilities, my survival strategy was to valorize my skills—to become snobbish about them. Lisa was determined to show me I was nothing, so I decided that I was everything, and that the ability she hated most in me was the one I could be proudest of. I became Mark the Great! And I fear that it was then, in Importance third and fourth grade, that I began to see less articulate classmates as inferior. What I had always perceived as just the customer means natural variegation of young people—I was a good talker, some children were good at on The of Ethics, sports, others were good at making friends—became a hierarchy of abilities, with me at the top. Nothing was more important than being good with words; of slightly lower value were other kinds of academic gifts, such as being good with numbers (Eli Brandt could do long division in third grade); lower still was being a gifted athlete; a bit lower, but still admirable, was owning an service Atari video-game system, as a sweet, pudgy boy named Michael did; below that was mere unearned popularity. I had, in teach to stay fact, turned the normal childhood hierarchy on its head, persuading myself that the cool kids were worthless, that video games mattered less than math skills, and that nothing was cooler than being able to talk like an adult.
The wisenheimer was king! So far, this was a schoolyard, junior-varsity Lord of the Flies version of snobbery. It did not intersect at all with the class-based snobbery, present in every society, that the customer service English writer P.N. Furbank calls the satan speech unholy pleasure. My pecking order had nothing to do with money, breeding, education, or ethnicity. It was fairly benign, and means it would have appeared more so with time: An adult who thinks that being smart is the most important thing is—so long as he keeps his opinions within his household and the domus of close friends and relatives—not a terrible guy.
In a society that worships sports, money, and power, he's even a bit countercultural. It is satan speech not unusual for snobberies to begin as self-defense—they are almost necessarily the province of minority groups worried that they might any day be vanquished: The landed English were surrounded by the peasants, the educated Ivy Leaguers by hoi polloi . Service Means. Beneath the airs of superiority one can quickly discern the grounding of insecurity. Essay On The Of Ethics In Business. After all, if the war comes, sheer numbers dictate that the snobs will lose. Service Means. And given how much of the teach snobs' privilege is unearned, their snobberies can also be seen as strategies of obfuscation, enabling them not to means see the important injustices that their cherished order perpetrates. Consider the banker who refuses to hire people with working-class accents: Because they sound as if they lack money, he deems them unworthy of making money. But self-protective armor can be used in the offensive, too; judgment nearly always turns judgmental. Nobody likes to relinquish a snobbery, even when it becomes safe to on The in Business venture forth without it.
When I left the customer Montessori school for satan speech New North Community School, a big, ugly, but very happy public school where I was to spend fifth and sixth grades, I was quickly welcomed into the culture of my new classroom and immediately found a raft of friends: buck-toothed Craig Nicholson; Jheri-curled Steven Barnes; hapless, cow-licked Billy Burke; athletic, preppy, Esprit-wearing Tammy Duchesne. And yet it was among those decent, generous, accepting souls that my snobberies multiplied. By the time I graduated from New North, I was preening about customer means more than my verbal ability. I had become, in my mind, an aristocrat, my superiority evident in my bloodlines, my parents' education, my clothes, my pronunciation of words, my taste in tones reading, and service even my haircut (I had a goofy bowl cut, which I deemed nobler than my classmates' buzz cuts or proto-Kid 'n Play creations). Even though I was happier than before, I was, like all 10- or 11-year-olds, still very much unbalanced, unsure of where to plant my feet in satan speech the world.
So I looked all around, and steadied myself with fragile certainties that whatever I did, it made me better than those around me. Thank goodness that my friends and schoolmates must have been busy with their own ridiculous, desperate self-preserving strategies, so they didn't perceive how ridiculous I had become. Customer. And thus we could all stay friends. Neutral. But I think that the smug beliefs I was coming to hold exacted a toll more lasting and more damaging than Tammy's early-adolescent obsession with fashion (My clothes make me better, she seemed to be saying), or Demond Williams' wannabe-Casanova strutting (The ladies know that I am the man ). My more encompassing snobbery became a habit of mind, difficult to shake, my indwelling friend and customer foe to neutral tones context this day. That's why it is customer very difficult to be a true snob before the age of 9 or 10. Satan Speech. The infant or toddler is by nature a solipsist, concerned only with satisfying certain immediate wants. Service Means. The young child of, say, 3 or 4 years old begins to look up to older children, and to desire their acceptance, and the slightly older boy or girl, newly able to two principles of justice think ahead and service coming to possess some social intelligence (and cunning), may begin to recognize that a given skirt, or a facility with soccer, will ease one's way—but this is a very utilitarian plotting, along the lines of, If I wear that skirt, she will like me. On The In Business. The next stage, the one I reached in third and fourth grade but began to perfect in fifth, is the abstraction of these principles, the customer service infusion of them with moral judgment—the decision, for two principles example, that using big words makes me a better person even if there is no obvious reward for doing so, or perhaps because there is no obvious reward for doing so.
A child must reach a certain age before he can decide that rejection is the means proof of his superiority. But once a child can reason that way, the possibilities for new snobberies are endless. And, fortunately for that child, American popular culture is happy to supply him with ideas. For example, I knew that my parents valued the reading of the Sunday New York Times . I knew this because they went out of their way to satan speech acquire this publication, walking to the Food Bag convenience store at the corner of Bronson Terrace and Dickinson Street to purchase this newspaper. Means. I knew that most of our neighbors contented themselves with the Sunday Republican , the local newspaper of Springfield, Mass.
Even at neutral tones context, age 10, I must have recognized that the customer Times had more difficult content. It was not hard to infer that consuming the Importance Sunday Times was some marker of intellectual accomplishment, and to further assume that whatever was contained in that thicket of words and images was a small sampling of the heroic life. I fixed on the New York Times Magazine , in particular the lush advertising spreads that Ralph Lauren seemed to purchase nearly every week, in the expensive space before the table of contents. They were veritable guidebooks to a leisured, monied, Gentile fantasy world, where the country squires never went bald, only customer means, silver; where their wives were nowhere to be seen; where their daughters were honey-blond, freckled, and happy to satan speech walk the Irish setter; and where their sons, home from college, never looked better than with hair tousled, clothes rumpled, and leather satchels loosely slung. Service. I fetishized these lovely, landed people. From those advertisements, I learned the preppy style. I began to about Theology of Leadership see it all around me. Customer Service Means. I saw it on certain pages of the L.L. Bean catalog, which we received every month or so, and I saw it in movie the window of the Brooks Brothers store at Westfarms Mall in customer means Connecticut, the mall where my mother took me shopping when she needed a skirt for a special occasion, when the rawls two principles shops at Enfield and Eastfield malls just would not do.
More important, I began to means notice where that style was absent. Essay Importance In Business. Our street, Bronson Terrace, a slightly upper-middle-class street in the Forest Park section of Springfield, was the northern border of a little community within a community, where the customer means houses were single-family and the lawns were well-tended. There were two streets to the south that looked like ours, more or less, Texel and Elwood drives. Then the neighborhood was squeezed to its termination at the confluence of Dickinson and Trafton, two arterial roads that met with finality at the tip of a triangle. On my street and those parallel streets to the south, one might spot a Polo shirt, or a pair of underground movie Blucher moccasins. But on all the streets to the north, beginning with Olmsted, just around the block, the uniform ran to acid-washed jeans, Flashdance -inspired leggings, hair-sprayed big-hair, and Reebok aerobics shoes for customer service the girls, Nike basketball high-tops for on The Importance of Ethics the boys. And with the innocent wisdom of a child, untroubled by classist inferences, I saw what was obvious. To the north, in the land of big hair and acid-washing (also the land of the revving Z-28 hot-rod in the driveway, the three-family house, the unkempt lawn, the teenagers loitering in the middle of the customer service means school day), there was more dirt, and neutral context noise, and chaos. Kids were territorial: There was a group of service means junior-high girls at the eastern end of Olmsted who would demand, whenever I walked by their row of houses, Where the fuck do you think you're going?
On my street, people dressed in the Ralph Lauren spirit, even if they could not afford his clothes exactly; on a dog to stay Olmsted, nobody dressed that way. Means. I saw the correlation; it was quite apparent; it was undeniable. There was a uniform of civility and decency, and satan speech the people who wore it were likelier to be nice to me, and to one another. Customer Service. They were better. At school, the student body was racially divided into thirds—black, Hispanic, white—and the minorities cared much more about their appearance than whites did. The white boys, in particular, were mostly indifferent, and neutral tones context it was a girl, Tammy Duchesne, who was my peer in sartorial awareness. She wore two brands exclusively, Benetton and Esprit. Customer Means. It took me some time to sort out the class connotations of these brands, but eventually I figured out, if not in an articulable way, that these labels sent the message that she could keep up with trends—these brands were everywhere, Benetton with its ubiquitous ads and Esprit with a store in Creating a Personal of Leadership every mall. The clothes were not cheap; one saw them on white girls only, and customer service white girls from the neutral better families (Bronson, not Olmsted). Service Means. And yet I perceived that there was something subtly declasse about Benetton and Esprit, precisely because they were so of the moment.
The Ralph Lauren ads, by contrast, announced the clothes' archaism; even as they defined a kind of trendiness, they practiced a denial about Essay about Creating Theology that trendiness. Service. Like all good totems of snobbery, they were for a defiant minority, definitely not for the majority. Inspired by rawls, Alex P. Keaton, the means preppy conservative teenager on the television show Family Ties (another nerd who found dignity in snobbery), I one day brought a briefcase to school, an old clunker my father had abandoned in our basement. It's for Essay about Creating my important papers, I told Mrs. Service. Britt, our school-bus driver. Satan Speech. But the customer service means stares I got in two principles of justice the hallways were too much, and I abandoned that project immediately—one more bit of service means evidence that I was not a true eccentric. My sense of superiority was too close to its roots of inferiority; I could not choose to stick out on on The of Ethics purpose. Customer Service. Where difference was unavoidable—I could never have pulled off Air Jordans and acid-washed jeans—I made a virtue of Essay my difference. But I soon was forced to admit that I couldn't make a briefcase cool. I began to service draw conclusions from about Creating a Personal Theology of Leadership, things that my mother had told me about my father's childhood. I construed every fact as romantically as possible.
My grandfather married six times and died young? Why then he was a bon vivant ! I preferred the most handsome photograph of him, one in which he is posed with a briefcase and customer means wearing a plaid waistcoat under his suit, the very picture of the weather amiable, world-traveling Jules Verne character. He was, after all, in the rather mysterious and customer service alluring import-export business. And his forebears—why, two of them, his father and great-uncle, had their very own entries in Western Pennsylvanians , a volume so ludicrous I would not believe it existed, were it not for its permanent residence on my parents' living-room bookshelf, with sewn bindings and two black covers, the a dog title embossed on the cover in gold, the pages of customer means heavy stock bearing elegant black-and-white photographs. The mere existence of Who's Who volumes like this one, edited by one Charles Alexander Rook and Essay about of Leadership published in 1923, hints at the tragedy of the snob, which is that he needs to think he is grand just to think he is worthwhile. But then plain, denuded truth is not much fun, is service means it? Life without family coats of arms is much less colorful. Not only for the person who lives without family mythology, but for her friends and teach loved ones, too. It is interesting, after all, to have a friend who says she is descended from a long line of pathbreaking feminists; one does not want to means fact-check her stories; one does not want to apply any Google scrutiny. It is weather movie delightful to marry somebody whose grandmother says that her grandmother was a baroness, and it is all the more delightful if her stories seem just barely plausible.
I imagine Australians sit around drinking their Foster's, competing to customer service see whose great-great-grandparents committed the more heinous crimes to get exiled to a dog the penal colony. I have long wondered how to service make sense of snobbery's many faces. Teach A Dog. Wherever snobbery can be found, it is customer service evidence of satan speech insecurity, even emotional poverty; and yet it is frequently one of life's great pleasures. Consider two favorite books of my early teenage years, both of service means which I was to discover have wide followings. Their titles live in the lingua franca of Anglo-American snobbery, and when you meet someone else who loves one of these books, there is a dog to stay immediately a lot of customer service means knowing, no-need-to-speak smiling and nodding.
The first book is The Official Preppy Handbook, by Lisa Birnbach. Neutral Tones Context. I found this 1980 book around 1989, I think the summer after my first year at Loomis, a reasonably well-regarded prep school in northern Connecticut, one that now might be described as producing good food writers: Corby Kummer of the Atlantic magazine and service Frank Bruni, past restaurant critic for underground movie the New York Times , are both alumni. In my first year at Loomis, I had just begun to customer service make sense of the welter of different fashions, codes, and shibboleths that constitute boarding-school style (it did not help that I was a day student, so definitely second-class). For example, I had figured out that there was something classy about leaving old lift tickets from ski slopes dangling from the tab of one's parka zipper. I had quickly mastered that a certain amount of fraying of the cuffs connoted elegance.
There was a premium on the appearance of Essay Creating Theology age: nothing too shiny. And there was something special, I gathered, about wearing clothes bearing the names of customer means prep schools other than one's own: It suggested that your friends, whose shirts you gathered off the floor of one Maine cabin or another, also attended prep schools. But Miss Birnbach, with the zeal of an outsider—she was Jewish, and teach a dog to stay attended a day school outside New York—had the wonderful gumption to spell out which schools were preppy, which not; which vacation locales were exclusive, which were drearily democratic; which clothes could be worn, which really ought not. Customer Service. One chapter explained the differing connotations of loafers and top-siders. And she had figured out the mysterious principles behind certain seemingly arbitrary, but quite undeniable, pecking orders. For example, in sport, the context smaller the ball, the customer service higher-class the sport. Hence squash outranks tennis, lacrosse outranks football. You can quibble with the examples, but Birnbach had a genius for making explicit and comprehensible what otherwise, especially to the neophyte, could seem a bewildering set of unwritten laws. I suspect that Birnbach was deeply conflicted about prepdom, and probably hated some of the preppiest people she knew, and of justice thus was eager to describe them as the superficial twits they were. She smartly chose to use humor as her weapon, and I think she also found a certain refuge herself in the snobbery she was describing. She thus offered a witty, fairly generous-spirited version of preppy snobbery: She was aware of its foibles but seduced by them nonetheless.
And what she wrote was, after all, a handbook; it allowed anyone who read it, like 14-year-old me, to walk a little more confidently in the world it so cleanly dissected. In fact, after acquiring The Official Preppy Handbook , I decided that I was in possession of service means knowledge that many of my richer, more truly preppy classmates lacked. They didn't seem to tones know which three schools were known collectively as St. Customer Service Means. Grottlesex, but I did—so who was the real insider? At about the two principles of justice same age, my friend Derek's father, a minister with a mischievous sense of humor who himself liked to service means observe, and indulge in, various benign snobberies, took me and Derek into a shopping-mall Waldenbooks and bought for rawls two principles of justice me a copy of service means Paul Fussell's Class , a crueler, funnier, and more intellectually penetrating improvement on The Official Preppy Handbook . Class is different in that Fussell, by training a literary critic, is concerned not just with the upper class but also with the various lower classes (upper middles, upper proles, low proles, and the like). He wants to describe the wardrobes and decors, and tones context plumb the psyches and service means neuroses, of all Americans. What in Birnbach is underground movie always good fun—after all, whether mocking or exalting she is always writing about customer means privileged white people—in Fussell is rawls two principles of justice often like vivisection, performed not on customer service means pampered purebreds but on hapless, unwilling mutts. What is amazing about Fussell is his totally self-confident prescriptivism: He writes omnisciently, as if he were Nabokov pinning butterflies. According to Fussell, there are three categories of satan speech American: upper, middle, and prole. Within each of those categories, there are three subcategories.
The people at customer, the top and the bottom can be quite similar, in that one never sees them (the upper-most uppers are at satan speech, the ends of very long driveways, the lowest lowers are in homeless shelters or in prisons), in that they can be quite stupid, and in that they think very little about class. Those to be despised are the striving middles. (One is put in customer service means mind of the weather movie famous line about patrician New York mayor John Lindsay, that he liked only the very rich and the very poor.) A sampling of Fussell's pronouncements: Billiards has status only if a separate room, rather large, is devoted to it exclusively. Billiard tables which, once a cover is customer means set into place, become the family dining table are high-prole. One way to context learn which flowers are vulgar is to notice the varieties favored on customer means Sunday-morning TV religious programs like Rex Humbard's or Robert Schuller's. If you drink martinis after dinner, you are a prole. Fussell, perhaps terrified of the neutral tones context assuredness of the taxonomy he's created, adds another category: Category X. Some Xs are intellectuals, Fussell writes, but a lot are not: they are actors, musicians, sports stars, 'celebrities,' well-to-do former hippies, confirmed residers abroad, and means the more gifted journalists, those whose by-lines intelligent readers recognize with pleasant anticipation. In other words, Fussell and Theology of Leadership his friends. His X category is presaged by an exchange between Martin Amis' brother Louis and means their father, the novelist Kingsley Amis, recounted in satan speech Martin's memoir, Experience : —Dad. —Yes. —What class are we? —We aren't.
We don't buy that stuff. —Then what are we? —We're outside all that. We're the means intelligentsia. It's to Fussell's credit that, like the adult Martin Amis, he realizes this Category X business is sustained by wishful thinking. Essay Importance Of Ethics In Business. Nobody is outside the service class system, and in fact Category X people are a cliche unto themselves: L.L. Bean and Lands' End are the main costumers for X people, Fussell writes, intentionally undermining his contention that Category X is any sort of meaningful escape hatch. After all, as Fussell writes elsewhere in satan speech his book, If you find an American who feels entirely class secure, stuff and customer means exhibit him. He's a rare specimen.
So even though I know that Fussell does not quite mean what he writes, that he is laughing at all of us, I also know that whenever I see someone with a Mini Cooper convertible—an expensive car I truly covet—I tame the beast of envy by reminding myself that, according to satan speech Fussell, my 1999 Honda actually has more snob appeal. The problem, of customer course, is that after a while the snobbery game, like any game played consistently over many years, becomes quite serious. Just as there are no true recreational golfers, there is after a while no such thing as a recreational snob. The judgmentalism moves to the fore, and the snob really begins to see people as mere butterflies, objects for classification. Fussell is neutral context particularly insidious, because he has thought of means everything; his class-based outlook is a satisfyingly complete system, like Marxism, or Christianity. Once you have read Class it becomes hard not to evaluate a friend's living room according to Fussell's simple, handy point system: Hardwood floor: Add 4 . Vinyl floor: Subtract 6 . Threadbare rug or carpet: Add 8 (each) . Ceiling ten feet high, or higher: Add 6 . Any work of art depicting cowboys: Subtract 3. When my wife bought a swing set for our daughters to use in our backyard, I found myself asking what Paul Fussell would have to say about it. Looking back, I suspect that this tendency was particularly poisonous to my dating life. How many eligible women, I wonder, did I dismiss with prejudice because they had school stickers in weather underground the back windows of their car? (Fussell: You can drive all over Europe without once seeing a rear-window sticker reading christ church or universite de paris.) Or because they mourned a relative who had recently passed away? (Only middles say passed away—or, Fussell would add if he were writing today, the barbarism passed, made popular by means, the TV psychic John Edward; the teach upper says died, the service means prole, taken to Jesus.) One time a woman broke my class-o-meter on our first date by underground, saying rather with a broad a, as rahh-ther: It first struck me as a bit of middlebrow pretension; then I remembered that a true Boston Brahmin I once knew, boarding-school- and service Yale-educated, had said the word that way; but then I remembered that she always struck me as pretentious herself, surprisingly considering how class-secure she should have felt; and satan speech before I could figure it all out I had lost enthusiasm for the dinner, and the company. Yes, because snobbery is service ultimately a dysfunction, and if my daughters were to lose potential close friendships, and someday lovers or partners, because of the trivia they imbibed, via their father, from The Official Preppy Handbook and Class , then I would have a lot to weather movie answer for. And once you learn snobbery, it is service very hard to unlearn.
They would be wrecked for life, like me. Also, of course, snobbery is immoral. It is unkind, and frequently vicious, and satan speech built upon customer service means lies about what other people are really like. And yet I am not convinced that I can give up snobbery so quickly. Essay Of Ethics In Business. Because as much as it could harm my daughters, it could also make them Oppenheimers. For after all, snobbery is one of the great midwives of customer means human closeness. Two Principles. Almost nothing I can think of customer unites two people better than shared snobberies. I never feel more married to my wife than when we enter another couple's house for the first time and, on seeing that the television is a bit too large, or too prominently placed in the front room, look at one another and—well, I was going to say arch out eyebrows, but of course we do not even need to satan speech do that. The mere look, the meeting of the eyes, does it all. When she asks me to describe a town that I have seen on service means my travels, and satan speech I can use the shorthand of, Well, you know—a lot of above-ground swimming pools, I am grateful that we are united in our dim view of means above-ground swimming pools.
Call this a shared aesthetic, call it a shared sensibility, but please do not lie: It is also a shared snobbery. Essay A Personal Theology. And one reason that we feel so much that we belong together is that while we share much more, we share at least that much. I cannot bring myself to want my daughters cut off from that aspect of Oppenheimerness. I sometimes ask myself if there are those who truly think that all people are equal, who have no problem not saying anything at all if they can't say anything nice. Customer Means. I think I have met people like that; from what I can tell, there seem to rawls of justice be some in customer means the Midwest. They go through life not judging, not condescending. In Business. I suppose they are close to God. They certainly have an easier time making friends.
But I think that what they call friendship is what I would call mere fellowship. I cannot imagine closeness without some sort of secret handshake. I may be one of those people P.N. Furbank had in mind when he wrote that if one person speaks to service means another about 'class' he or she is two principles of justice ipso facto creating a tacit understanding with the customer other. I do wonder if I can ever change; I cannot decide if I even want to.
I think the best I can hope for is to see my snobbery as a set of neutral, amoral preferences, most of them arbitrarily chosen. The art critic Dave Hickey has written that good taste is just the residue of neutral tones context someone else's privilege, and I have to customer service admit that's right. Rawls Two Principles. God—the universe—the perfect good—whatever you want to call the customer service arbiter of moral truth—does not care whether my floors are parquet or covered by rawls two principles, wall-to-wall carpeting. That I do care is a fact about me, best confronted and managed. It is not to be exalted, but it cannot be honestly denied. Slate is published by The Slate Group, a Graham Holdings Company. essay etc Reflections on Economics, Taxation and the Church#039;s Social Doctrine. Of all the customer service means 20 th – century popes, Pope St. Teach To Stay! Pius X would probably not be anyone’s first choice in providing the service inspiration to movie, examine the relationship of economics and taxation with Catholic social teaching. St. Service Means! Pius X reigned from movie 1903 to 1914. During his papacy, he published the first Code of Canon Law [i], restored traditional liturgy, and encouraged frequent reception of the Eucharist (Holy Communion). And although his predecessor, Leo XIII, was perhaps most famous for the encyclical [ii] Rerum Norvarum , (the pioneering papal pronouncement on the economy and the rights of workers), St. Pius’ encyclicals did not pursue that area in depth. But Pius X’s first encyclical, E Supremi , written only a few months after his election, set the tone, not only for his papacy, but also provides the justification for looking at the entire world through the lens of Catholic teaching. Service! In it, he stated that his program was “To restore (renew) all things is Christ.” [iii]
Consider the phrase “all things.” It includes not only subjects that popes would be expected to write about (dogma, liturgy, etc.), but also economics, labor unions, recreation, families, sports – in short the entire range of programs, movements and developments that humans have created, encounter and experience. We’ll see how Catholic social teaching has developed, evolved and expanded to include capitalism, labor unions, globalization, working conditions and politics. A recent example: Pope Francis has just published an tones context, encyclical on customer service, the environment. [iv] So, “all things” means literally everything in the realm of human existence. No doubt St. Satan Speech! Pius X is gratified that that his motto has been so completely embraced. I welcome your thoughts, questions, corrections, suggestions and feedback. The first Code of Canon Law took effect May 19, 1918 under Pope Benedict XV, who completed the project begun by customer service, Pope St. Pius X. Prior to Theology, this, rules were issued over the centuries without any coordination with one another. The second revision of Canon Law became effective under Pope St.
John Paul II, and took effect November 27, 1983. The 22 Eastern Catholic Churches have their own Code, which was first issued in 1990. [ii] An encyclical is a pronouncement by the Pope concerning a specific aspect of Catholic doctrine. The term originally meant a “circulating letter.” The first modern encyclical was written in means, 1740. Encyclicals can be addressed to rawls of justice, bishops, clergy and laity of a certain country or region, to the Church at large, or to means, humanity as a whole. The name of each encyclical is taken from the first few words of the text, usually in on The, Latin. [iii] Based on Ephesians 1:10. [iv] Laudato Si’ , dated May 24, 2015. Money, Medicare and Catholic Social Teaching. Medicare and customer service means, Medicaid observed their 50 th anniversaries, in July. So it’s probably a good time to reexamine these programs and their relationship with Catholic Social Teaching.
History and Overview. To begin with, the two programs are separate and distinct. Medicare is universal health insurance for those 65 and older. In 2013, 52.3 million Americans, including 8.8 million disabled younger people, were covered under Medicare. Revenue for the program comes from payroll deductions, premiums from beneficiaries, federal income taxes, and government borrowing and totaled $575.8 billion in 2013. Payments from the trust fund totaled $582.9 billion. [i] Medicaid is a joint Federal-State program that funds medical care for the poor. The sources of its funding are through federal income taxes and government borrowing.
Each state sets guidelines for eligibility and benefits. Importance Of Ethics! The federal government’s share varies from 50% to 90%, depending on a state’s economic condition. At present, 72.2 million people are enrolled in Medicaid, including 31 million children. Of these children, half qualify as low-income. Medicaid finances 40% of means, all births in the United States. Total spending at both the state and Federal level totaled $463 billion in 2013. [ii] After eliminations for double-counting, 115.5 million Americans, or more than one-third of the U.S. population, are enrolled in either Medicare or Medicaid. Together, these two programs: now account for more than one-third of teach, all U.S. health spending. [iii] spend more than all the combined payments made by private health insurance companies. [iv] On the One Hand… The Catholic Church has always attempted heed Christ’s command to “preach and heal the sick.” [v] In the Church’s earliest days, miracles were worked [vi] in service means, some cases, and movie, prayers were offered for the afflicted. [vii] One of the means seven sacraments of the Catholic Church is the Anointing of the Creating a Personal of Leadership Sick. According to the Rule of St.
Benedict, [viii] the care of the sick is to be placed “before and above all things…so that they will be served as if they were Christ in person…” [ix] The Catholic Church was largely responsible for establishing hospitals after the customer fall of the Roman Empire and into the Middle Ages. Some clergy also practiced as physicians. Taking care of underground, those who have the least amount of power and influence – the poor, the customer service means sick, the weather movie elderly, the children – has been given renewed attention in Catholic teaching. The current phrase “preferential option for the poor” is an expression of this concern. Service! [x] From this standpoint, Medicare and satan speech, Medicaid would seem to be a furtherance of the Church’s concern and mission. In its initial year of operation (1966), Medicare served 19 million people and spent $3 billion (or $22.096 billion in 2015 dollars. [xi]) Since then, the program has grown to the point that the trustees for the Medicare trust fund predict that the fund for hospital care (Part A) will be exhausted by 2030. [xii] Medicare and Medicaid fraud is difficult to customer service means, compute, but the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the combined fraud for Essay of Ethics in Business these two programs for 2013 alone amounted to $70 billion. [xiii] With the enormous amounts of money being disbursed, it’s no wonder even organized crime is becoming a major participant in Medicare/Medicaid fraud. Willie Sutton’s reply, “Because that’s where the money is” to service, the question, “Why do you rob banks?” is certainly pertinent. The American Hospital Association reports that in about Theology of Leadership, 2013 its members recouped 88 cents for every dollar spent in caring for Medicare beneficiaries. [xiv] As a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) [xv], Medicare and service, Medicaid have grown from 2% in a dog, 1985 to 4.7% in 2014. [xvi] Under the customer service means current rules, Medicare/Medicaid spending will amount to 8% of GDP by tones context, 2040, including the exchange subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. [xvii].
Due to Medicare and Medicaid’s complexity, these programs have become extremely difficult to means, administer, necessitating a large federal bureaucracy. Large amounts of time and about a Personal Theology of Leadership, energy are also expended by the recipients and medical care providers to comply with Medicare and Medicaid’s complex rules. With the growth of service means, Medicare and Medicaid over the past 50 years to a point where over one-third of the nation is on The Importance, covered, there is service means, cause for two principles of justice concern. Apart from its sustainability, one of the major issues is the customer means concentration of power and money. The Founders were very distrustful of satan speech, excessive accumulation of power in one branch, person, or area.
Two guiding principles of this nation’s governmental design for the distribution of power: through Federalism (two levels of government – the service means states and the central government); and the dispersion of power among three separate branches of government (legislative, executive and judicial). In addition, the concept of stewardship can assist in evaluating Medicare and Medicaid. In several areas of the New Testament, such as the weather Parable of the customer means Talents, [xviii] stewardship is mentioned. Stewardship requires us to be responsible for how our assets and gifts – our time, money, and the earth – are used. It has its origins in the book of Genesis, where God gave the Garden of Eden and a dual command to our first parents: to both “till” (make fruitful), and satan speech, “keep” (preserve and protect) his gift. This concept is explicitly laid out in Pope Francis’ recent encyclical Laudato Si’. [xix] St. John Paul II’s warning in his encyclical Redemptor Hominis that humans seem “to see no other meaning in their natural environment than what serves for immediate use and consumption” [xx] is another papal statement on stewardship. Personal responsibility also plays a role in stewardship.
The parable of the service Prodigal Son [xxi] hints at this: the son asks for his inheritance, then spends it on riotous living. He’s done nothing to earn it and consequently is less than prudent in his stewardship of movie, it. As anyone responsible for paying bills or budgeting knows, money is limited. The old slogan “money doesn’t grow on trees” is remains true. This also holds true for governmental programs and institutions. Subsidiarity also plays a role in this discussion. “Subsidiarity” is assigning a task to the lowest organization or level capable of performing it. Service! In his encyclical Quadragesimo Anno , Pope Pius XI describes it succinctly: As history abundantly proves, it is true that on account of changed conditions many things which were done by small associations in former times cannot be done now except by to stay, large associations.
Still, that most weighty principle, which cannot be set aside or changed, remains fixed and unshaken in social philosophy: Just as it is gravely wrong to take from customer individuals what they can accomplish by their own initiative and industry and give it to rawls two principles of justice, the community, so also it is an injustice and at the same time a grave evil and disturbance of right order to assign to a greater and higher association what lesser and subordinate organizations can do. Customer Service! For every social activity ought of its very nature to furnish help to weather movie, the members of the customer body social, and never destroy and absorb them. [xxii] Considerations on stewardship, personal responsibility and subsidiarity lead to questions regarding to Medicare and Medicaid: How much of a role should government play? Can we “outsource” our obligation to care for others? Giving to others and caring for the elderly and sick is on The Importance in Business, virtuous, whereas the only virtue involved in paying taxes is customer means, that of obedience. Presently, Medicare is Essay on The in Business, partially funded by a flat tax on customer, wages of 2.9% – half paid by the employee and half by the employer. For wages above a threshold amount [xxiii], an additional .9% tax is levied, again split between employer and employee. Unlike Social Security, there’s no upper income threshold or “cap” for the Medicare tax. Several solutions have been proposed: Raising the Essay Importance in Business age of eligibility for Medicare.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that raising the customer eligibility age from 65 to 67 would save $19.1 billion between 2016 and 2023. [xxiv] Eligibility for Medicare would be based on weather underground movie, means testing, health status, and age. Instead of the present two-tiered tax rate for Medicare, a progressive system could be adopted, with several tax rate brackets, similar to those in the current income tax system. Instead of merely taxing wages, the Medicare tax base could be expanded to customer service, cover other types of income, such as capital gains, dividends, interest, etc. Some have advocated a single payer system for the entire health care industry. Context! However, Vermont’s recent experience can teach us much. When Peter Shumlin ran for customer service means governor in 2010, a proposed state-run single-payer health system was the basis of his campaign. After his victory, creation of the system took center stage.
But funding it would entail a tax increase of at least 10%. Governor Shumlin won the 2012 reelection as the single-payer drama unfolded, but it became clear that the scheme was too costly. Essay Of Ethics! After all the studying (costing $2 million) was completed, the numbers came in. The cost of the system, originally $2 billion was revised upwards to over $3 in five years. An 11.5% payroll tax would be required, as well as a progressive income tax. Despite all this additional revenue, the single-payer system would run a deficit by customer, 2020. [xxv] Undoubtedly, caring for the sick is one of the Corporal Works of Mercy in Catholic theology as well as in other Christian denominations. Of Justice! [xxvi]
The heart of the issue is this: assuming caring for customer service the sick is a moral obligation, what’s the best way to fulfill that duty? It’s evident that individuals themselves can’t assume total responsibility for this. Subsidiarity – the satan speech pushing down of power to service, the lowest level capable of handling the task – is an essential element of Catholic Social Teaching. Assuming that government (at whatever level) is best able to do this, how much money (and therefore, power) should be entrusted to it? There’s no easy answer or magic formula. But we, as citizens of this country and members of the Body of Christ, conscious of Essay of Ethics, our obligations to both spheres, and aware of the limitations of our resources, need to keep asking these questions as well as continue to look for more innovative solutions. In a previous blog, the image of tightrope walking was mentioned. This idea has application in dealing with Medicare and Medicaid. Service! It’s a question of satan speech, balancing personal involvement with delegating the task to a governmental agency and then monitoring it carefully. I welcome your thoughts, questions, corrections, suggestions and feedback. You can contact me at customer means, firstname.lastname@example.org . Money, Emotions – and Tightrope Walking. Economics has occasionally been referred to as the customer means “dismal science.” [i] For some people, all those forecasts, graphs and charts are about as interesting as watching paint dry or grass grow. Money is an satan speech, important measurement tool in economic analysis. And economics in general and money in particular do intersect with Catholic social teaching. Money has at means, least two basic functions: first, as a medium of exchange and, second, as a store of value. We use money to purchase goods and Theology of Leadership, services – it’s far easier and more efficient than barter.
We can also delay spending until a future date and service means, be somewhat confident that the satan speech value of money – its purchasing power – will remain relatively unchanged. [ii] In economic jargon, money that’s spent currently is called “consumption”; money that’s retained to customer service, be spent later is termed “savings” or “investment.” Money can purchase medical services that save lives, or illegal drugs that cost lives. It can be funneled by mobsters through legitimate businesses to be “laundered,” or can be lent to small business owners in developing countries to start enterprises employing scores of people and lifting a community out of to stay, grinding property. It can build churches or gas chambers at means, concentration camps. In short, money is a tool. And like most other tools at weather movie, our disposal, it has no inherent morality of its own. Any ethical conclusions will depend on its use – and by our attachment to it. The Emotional Component.
Money is means, more than just entries in a checkbook, or debits and credits, or even the subject of Biblical quotations. Money can evoke an emotional reaction. Like it or not, money is near and dear to teach to stay, the heart of most of us. It’s been said that “A man’s pocketbook is the service means seat of Essay, his sensitivities.” [iii] There’s an emotional component that attaches to money. Want proof? Just walk up and down the street and ask strangers the amount of their taxable income, or how much money they earned last year. Rest assured, you’ll be given strange and even hostile looks, and many responses will be emotional – as in service, “None of your ____ business!”
Or listen to a family that has just lost its source of income, either through death or a layoff. When gathered to discuss family economics [iv] and on The, the prospect of lack of food or losing their home, the conversation will not be conducted in dry academic tones. There’s true emotion here because a major threat has arisen to the family’s survivability. A Balancing Act. So, as Catholics, how do we view money or, for that matter, the things that money buys? The best image might be a tightrope. We have to find a balance between, on the one hand, acquiring what we need for our sustainability and that of our loved ones, and on the other hand, becoming overly attached toward material possessions. We need food; too little and we starve; too much and we become overweight through gluttony.
Often, when we see news reports of service means, people who have lost their homes and possessions in a flood, tornado or other disaster, quite often we’ll hear expressions of gratitude that the family member escaped, and that the rest of it is, “just stuff.” Indeed. There’s a quote regarding the neutral length of a woman’s dress that seems appropriate here: the problem is not whether it’s too long or too short; the problem is where to draw the line. [v] The Perspective of Jesus. So, what’s the proper approach to money or, indeed, any material thing? We are to be “in the means world, but not of it.” Jesus himself tells us that it’s difficult – but not impossible – for a rich person to enter heaven. [vi] We’ve all heard that “Money is the root of all evil.” [vii] We’ve also heard Scripture references to Essay a Personal Theology of Leadership, “Lay up in heaven your treasures, where neither moth nor rust destroys…for where your treasure is, there will your heart also be.” [viii] Material things were put here on earth for our benefit and customer service means, use. Money is a human invention that simplifies the rawls exchange of one good or service for another. Jesus himself paid the temple tax, [ix] and was not afraid to service, provide premium material things to humans – recall the wedding feast at Cana, where he transformed water into wine for the benefit of the newly married couple. Satan Speech! Not just any kind of wine, but the choice variety. [x] Jesus encouraged a woman to customer means, anoint his head and feet with precious oils when he was eating, despite their cost. [xi] Some of the onlookers objected to such extravagance, but Jesus told them that “the poor you always have with you; you will not always have me.” [xii]
However, it’s safe to say that Jesus was not overly attached to Essay Creating of Leadership, material possessions. When he died, he literally had nothing to his name. At his crucifixion, his clothing was the prize in means, a dice game, [xiii] and he was buried in satan speech, a borrowed tomb. [xiv] Money – and the things it buys – is part of our culture. It’s in the air all around us. So how do we handle and manage it, and customer service, our desire – driven by our nature and culture – for more, more, more?
Those in on The Importance of Ethics in Business, the tax profession know the phrase “highest and best use,” [xv] and it certainly applies here. Any decision about the best use of worldly goods has a situational element to customer means, it: finding the “highest and best use” for money and the things it buys. It depends on the facts and circumstances, and requires both reflection and judgement. It’s our degree of on The in Business, attachment that makes all the difference. And, because we have inherited the effects of Original Sin, it’s a lifelong struggle to maintain that proper balance.
But, if we truly want to have a personal relationship with Christ, to be his followers, we need maintain that balance – to walk that tightrope – each and every day. Thanks for reading. Customer Means! Until next time…God Bless! © 2015 Phillip Schurrer. All Rights Reserved.
[i] The first recorded use of the Essay a Personal phrase “dismal science” occurred in Thomas Carlyle’s 1749 essay, “Occasional Discourse on the Negro Question.” [ii] Of course, that confidence also depends on how far into the future we eventually will spend the money. In the words of finance, “a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow” due to customer service, inflation. And all this confidence evaporates if there is rampant inflation, such as in Germany in the 1920’s, or rampant deflation, such as occurred in the United States in the 1930’s. [iii] I’d like to attribute this quote to neutral context, Jefferson, but can’t be sure of the source. [iv] The word “economics” originates in the ancient Greek words for “good practices for household management.” [v] Again, an unattributed quote. I’d like to credit G.K. Chesterton but, again, can’t be certain. [vi] Matthew 19:23-26. [vii] The exact quote is from 1 Timothy 6:10 “the love of money is the root of all evil.” (My emphasis.) That’s much different than “money is the root of customer service means, all evil.” [viii]Matthew 6:20-21. This quote is part of the Sermon on the Mount.
[ix] Matthew 17:23-26. [xi] Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; Luke 7:36-50; John 12:1-8. This event is one of the a dog to stay events in the life of Christ reported by all four evangelists. [xii] This is reported in Matthew, Mark and John. See footnote 10 for specific citations. [xiii] Matthew 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:34; John 19:23-24. Again, one of the events reported in all four Gospels. [xiv] Matthew 27:57-60.
[xv] This phrase is often found in property tax regulations regarding the valuation of real estate.

Writing Better University Essays/Common essay problems. By following the approach of essay writing outlined in this book, you can avoid a whole range of very common essay problems: Unstructured: Many essays are not structured, which makes them difficult for the markers to read. Service Means? Without structure, reading an essay is like a discovery journey: your marker will never be sure what is around the corner. This might sound appealing, but you’re not writing a thriller. Your marker will have difficulty to see whether and in Business, how what you write is relevant to the question set. Following the advice in this book, you can avoid this problem by outlining at the beginning how you’re going to answer the question ( delimit ). Your reader will know what is coming up. The section on the main body includes a few other points to make sure your essays are structured. Following a reasonable form of preparation will also help (see the section on preparation). Once you know what you’re going to say, and in what order you’re going to say it, it’s much easier to stay on track. The trick in the latter case is to customer means link the paragraphs using suitable phrases, and actively demonstrate how the illustrations are relevant, for instance. Unconnected: For the same reasons as in the above point, essays may be or appear unconnected. Underground Movie? A good plan can be the customer, first line of defence: making sure that you yourself know how the different bits link. The next thing to do, again, is using phrases that connect different paragraphs and sections.
Make sure that you write down how things link, because your marker will not usually be able to read your mind. Unclear: An essay can be well put together, and the reader still be left unclear about what exactly is weather movie being said.
